Her cutie mark is known as the Spiral Sun, an old Native American symbol.

It depicts the sun in the meaning of "first shaman", or "first healer", where the spiral itself is the circle of life and the harmony of nature.

Zecora isn't very shamanistic, but she's definitely a healer. Suns also feature heavily in alchemy, although to my knowledge not in a spiral fashion.
Celestial bodies are also common cutie mark themes for powerful ponies, but they're also fairly common cutie marks in general.

Probably. But don't take it TOO literally.

Stars are also suns (although not in symbolism), and stars are very common in cutie marks, Twilight is just one example.
But Sunset Shimmer also has a sun cutie mark (hers is the more common wavy-rays sun you see in many Western Middle Age and later depictions, with it's core replaced by the Yin/Yang. Celestia's own mark is one variation of the same symbol.), and although I only watched the first movie, she doesn't strike me as a font of wisdom. Certainly not to the same extent Celestia and Zecora are, and Twilight is definitely wiser than Sunset.
Star Swirl the Bearded was one of the wisest ponies who lived, supposedly, and his cutie mark (in merch, at least) is four stars and a spiral (or swirl), at least he's in no way associated with sun-symbolism.

Sunset Shimmer's cutie mark is really cool.
Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle were always meant to be very alike, I think. Academically gifted but lacking in terms of actual wisdom. This is particularly true for Twilight in the early seasons, and it also shows in Sunset and her love of brute domination.
But Sunset Shimmer feels like a character that was rather clumsily thrown into the universe. The way I see it, they probably gave her her cutie mark due to her name.

Thinking about stars, they seem to represent magic among ponies. They're in Twilight's cutie mark, Starswirl's, and even Trixie's. Trixie may be a bit a cunt who tends to bite off more than she can chew, but I don't think there's any denying that magical tricks are her specialty.

Like with suns, there are problems when you try to apply this sort of symbolism to the show. The cutie marks are too damn common.

Sure, it might add up on occasion. It might even add up on many occasions, but it never adds up perfectly.
What about this guy? His mark is AFAIK unique.

Or what about the numerous other characters with star-themed and unique (or very rare) cutie marks? There are at least:
- Masquerade, a really cute background earth pony who shares Twilight's cutie mark
- Cloudchaser, (one of the pegasus sisters) has a unique mane-style and a unique cutie mark: a shooting star.
- Lightning Dust, a unique mark depicting three stars with a lightning bolt.

Are all of these characters especially magically gifted?

Don't get me wrong, many ponies have unique meaning behind their cutie marks. Zecora's mark as mentioned refers to magic, healing, life and harmony, all of which apply to Zecora. The only bit that's really off is that she's an alchemist (uses material means, heals by way of elixirs and purification and transmutation of essence) rather than a shaman (uses spiritual means, mends the soul, and a healthy soul then reflects a healthy body).
Although, thinking about all the numerous traditions she's seemingly studied, she might be a shaman too, she might even have gotten her cutie mark in shamanism way back whenever, and she's later incorporated shamanism too into the greater art of Alchemy. Like in >>29632182, shamanistic spirit-journey to discover alchemical secrets, why the fuck not?
That's all deep-level speculation though, with almost nothing substantial behind it, I doubt the rabbit hole is *that* deep.

It's just that you can't deconstruct cutie marks and do the reverse. Stars don't make you a good mage any more than flowers make you a good farmer, or make you a good teacher, the context they appear in is everything.
And THAT, I guess, is a sort of depth of it's own, isn't it? The idea that each cutie mark is as unique and individual Ignoring duplicate stock cutie marks as the ponies who bear them, each with a unique, individual meaning.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zecora really is a shaman, though. Even if she doesn't literally communicate with spirits, she seems to have everything else you could expect from one nailed down.

But yes, individualism and uniqueness is FiM's big thing. That's been made very very clear many many times.

There were three types of ponies who migrated during the Heart's Warming Eve events, but many more types beyond those exist.
Even if you draw a hard line and exclude breezies, changelings and saddle arabians, aside from the three common pony types we have bat ponies and crystal ponies, both of which demonstrate the same body shape and general characteristics, with a few unique traits specific to each type.

Well, EQG isn't canon, so whatever goes on in there doesn't really matter.

I figure they wanted to make a Twilight clone, so they picked another time of day (Sunset) and another word for "shine" (Shimmer), and then just made a cool cutie mark from there. Same story with Glimglam, but she's a more carefully thought out.

What does Sunset's mark even mean? It doesn't matter, really. Cutie marks aren't important in EQG. But if we consider her life in Equestria, what does the sun cutie mark mean? I assume it is supposed to be about magic, but normally such a cutie mark involves magic-burst shapes. Even Sunburst, whose talent is clearly magic and also has a sun in his mark, has some magic-burst shapes in it.

Magic cutie marks also relate to stars fairly often, but could it be that magical ponies have some sort of affiliation with celestial bodies? Twilight and and Starlight would be affiliated with stars, Sunburst and Sunset would be affiliated with the sun, and I suppose Moondancer would be affiliated with the moon.

The same applies, and these themes are far too common in cutie marks to signify anything on their own.
Cloud Kicker (pegasus), Spring Step and Lilac Sky (pegasi cheerleaders) and Bon Voyage all have sun and cloud cutie marks.
Crescent Moon (background pegasus who looks fairly similar to Time Turner) has a crescent moon.
Sunshine Smiles (tries the Celestia-inspired dress while her sister wears the Luna-inspired dress in Canterlot Boutique) has a sun and sparkles. At least she's a unicorn though.
Etc.

Even if you interpret suns and celestial bodies to include talent in other, non-unicorn types of magic like pegasus magic, there's just no way in a million years any of those pegasi listed would be more magically gifted than RD is, for example.

I think you have to consider some context here.

First, Luna's special talent appears to be raising/lowering the moon. The rest of her abilities could be attributed to her being an alicorn.

Consider the context of the sun in the pegasus marks you mentioned - the clouds symbolize weather. So with Sunburst/Sunset, the sun means power, but with those pegasi, it is more literal - just a cloudy sky.

The stars in >>29632151 form a constellation. Perhaps he is an astronomer, or maybe it represents an open night sky.

Sunshine Smiles' mark surely represents her sunny disposition.

What I mean to say is, I think there may be some consistency when you consider context. The sun in a magical context would mean something different from the sun in a meteorological context. Amongst, important characters, surely you cannot deny the trend.

Which with the original maps released made no sense as the only things beyond the forest was Appleoosa to the South and Ocean to the West. Now, on more current maps, a vast swath of land has been added, as well as a narrow strait of ocean. Across that strait is a savanna... Much like where Zebras might live!
