In some I guess it's a voting nation with developed technology, but I've also seen a lot of depictions where it's an Orwellian turbo-dictatorship and things like "emotions" and "nature" are literally "banned". Good luck banning fundamental things like that - you may as well try to ban consciousness and reality altogether, and the attempt is going to pretty much cripple your entire nation.
