Back then I always imagined a beach episode with all ponies weraring comical 1920's bathing suits except by rainbow Dash, who would be wearing a surfer-like neoprene suit instead.

The explanation for the bathing suits would be that rather than being clothes to dress themselves, the suits are meant to keep their coats dry when they swim.
