i imagine theyd either attach something to their foreleg or possibly a helmet
>>
>>29597330
>i imagine theyd either attach something to their foreleg
This actually. Strap a brick to their leg and hammer with that.

>or possibly a helmet
That would be pretty funny but still has similar issues to mouthhammers in terms of dispersing the force into the head/neck instead of sturdier body parts.
>>
you could try for Simple10 aka the FEMTORPG thread's system
>>
>>29597344
hardhats accomplish this just fine. theyd just have to design it to disperse energy around their head instead of into it
>>
>>29596713
Secondary question for not OP:
Are there any D&D campaigns that take place in Equestria? Preferably more recent to avoid contradicting recent lore.
>>
>>29598145
You could use any universal system if you put in enough effort.
There is for example a Savage Worlds homebrew, I think.
>>
>>29596713
avoid ponyfinder and ponies for pathfinder, the races are horribly imbalanced and some are just flat out better than others, sometimes even in the same niche.
>>
I've used http://cheezedoodle96.deviantart.com/art/MLP45E-Dungeons-and-Dragons-With-Ponies-490872927 and it's fun

>>
>>29599181

>>
>>29596713
Thank god they let me know that was a 6 to avoid confusion. Dont want to accidentally roll a 9 on my d6.
>>
>>29596713
Homebrew works, there are rulesets out there for D&D/Pathfinder
I know this because I am in a game using these. It's actually really enjoyable.

Pegasus OP. Any player race with innate flight can ignore most cliffs and difficult terrain unless you're spending the entire game underground
>>
>>29599317
I like how caster classes can just fly right out of character creation but most martials need to burn up to two feats to fly.
>>
>>29599317
flight in a game is only as op as the gm is willing to let it be, especially if flight capable characters are in the minority and/or lack strength to ferry other party members.
just like any other magic ability really.
usually in-game obligations to stick together and whatnot will keep a flyer from fleeing the coop at the first sign of trouble or completely bypassing an obstacle.
>>
>>29596713
Ponyfinder - Dawn of the Fifth Age is a good, it puts ponies in the 5th edition of D&D which is one of the easiest D&D version to learn and play.

ROAN is also a good, it's ponies in the 1940's.
>>
>>29599402
Your GM should be able to handle this in a way to make it not caster edition twice as hard

And of course D&D/Pathfinder already come with a lot of ways to deal with flying enemies. In a world where a large chunk of the population can fly, it would make sense that these ways become much more common than the specialist tools they are in settings where flight is not as prolific

>>29599450
Also this. Flight has a lot of perks, but you need to be a strength build to have the carry capacity to bring along your team, even if you bring them one by one. Or someone with magic that boosts you for that, but then at that level they'll be able to magic away most obstacles anyway

Roll20's not really needed for Tales of Equestria. It was designed to be played without miniatures or grids. You could do the whole thing over Discord with a dice-rolling bot if you wanted.

>>29602306

Roll20 has the advantages of being able to control some stuff the players see and hear though.

You can give a picture to represent the party talking to a specific NPC, and have specific musing playing in the backround, and do fancier handouts and such. There's a lot more neat things t hat come with roll20 than simply grids and dice rolling.

I'm also a fan of how it lets you easily keep track of NPCs as well. It definitely has a lot of great DM side management stuff.

>Roll20 has the advantages of being able to control some stuff the players see and hear though
Good DMing has the advantage of being able to control EVERYTHING the players see and hear.

Roll20 is okay, but it's nothing DMs weren't doing with IRC.
>>
Cavatore is confirmed to be the main designer behind this, right?
That's actually kind of hilarious that he's now making a light game for a younger audience, seeing as he's mostly known for wargames.
>>
>>29604970

Bullshit.

You don't have the environmental controls over IRC as you do compared to playing in real life. roll20 can add a lot of easy little bits to give some of that control to a DM reguardless of distance.

Theatre of the mind via writing is powerful, and if you can supplement it with other tools, it can be even more powerful.

And I'm a cranky old grog who has played more games over IRC than roll20.

I've been working on a GURPS homebrew on-and-off for some time, me and a couple of bros planned to run an MLP campaign as our next campaign but interest sort of faded for everyone, and we plan to run a posthuman sci-fi setting instead.

Mostly I've got racial templates and the skeleton of a setting set up (set a couple of years after Luna's banishment - relatable, but still far enough away to not clash too badly with canon - Everfree Castle has been evacuated as the forest is expanding, Celestia has barricaded herself away in mourning inside her palace atop Mt. Canter, and Equestria is generally in disarray as griffons, dragons and other entities probe for weakness.)

I think the biggest hurdle is magic. There are just so damn many types of magic. The common ones are easy, unicorn magic, pegasus magic, earth pony magic, and general cutie-mark magic/talents are simulated easily through combinations of Advantages, Talents and Sorcery (for unicorn magic).
But other types of magic like friendship magic and alchemy? A restricted version of RPM would probably work best, but all my options frankly seems like more effort than they're worth.

Other than that though, I gotta say I love how easily GURPS lends itself to something as unconventional as an MLP setting.

GURPS is very, very good if you're running something more simulationist. It's extremely well-researched and almost all values for damage, protection, speed, statistical accuracy of a shooter, chance of survival, etc. are based on real-world physics and data.
Very simple to get into as a player as well (all you need to remember is 3d6 and roll under your skill/attribute value). Everything is built on the same basic rules From GURPS ultra-lite's: "Roll against DX to climb, attack, jump or lockpick" up to advanced Martial Arts "Kicking is a Technique trained up from Acrobatics, Acrobatics is based on DX, and kicking someone in the face is a -5 hit location modifier", and it's very easy to transition from the simpler rules to more advanced rules inbetween sessions or even in-play, or vice-versa.

From what I gather, the meme that it's bad mostly comes from inexperienced GM's trying to use EVERY option at once. Many options are thematically opposite and trying to use them all at once will drown you in work and lead to trouble.
It's true, GURPS being highly simulationst requires a lot of work on the GM's end to determine WHAT you want to simulate and therefore WHAT rules to use. In a detective story you probably don't need advanced martial arts options or Gun-Fu, and in a Western setting you don't need the rules for suffocating in a vacuum. On the off chance someone DOES suffocate in a vacuum, you can just look up the relevant rule on the fly and incorporate it seamlessly. And if you're playing Rambo you don't want to bother with details like bleeding mechanics, exact ammunition count, etc.
So yeah, a lot of overhead work required by the GM kills most inexperienced player's interest before the game even gets rolling, and that's where the meme originates from.

Thanks for the quick rundown.
>>
>>29612316

The main reason I'd use GURPS for an MLP game is:
- Classless point-buy. An Earth pony won't be inherently weaker than a unicorn or pegasi despite lack of spells and wings.
- Versatility. GURPS handles things like hooves, claws, wings, telekinesis and mouth-manipulators well. Useful both when making racial templates feel unique and the numerous unusual MLP monsters like timber wolves.
- Similar basic assumptions regarding magic. A mage can be knocked out with a quick tap on the horn and even Celestia can be ambushed and backstabbed. An archmage can be devastating but is never untouchable.
- Well fleshed-out social aspects. There's a difference between Twilight (low social skills, high intelligence, high reputation), Fluttershy (abysmal social skills, crippling social disadvantages like her shyness, and very high appearance) and Rarity (social skills, natural charisma, appearance).

I've been thinking about it. Maybe something in the weekends, at a time that would be more appropriate for us Yuros.

Something else I've been wanting to do is to write up a proper lightweight ruleset for those old freeform threads that went under the "Equestria: Total War"/"Equestria Divided" monikers.
Not because I'm that much of a fan of war stuff or grimdark, but because I think it would be fun to run a complete "campaign" in it with rotating players on all sides of the conflict, but having the factions and outcomes be persistent between threads.
