I agree that the number of generals on this board is a problem, but I don't think it's going to be fixed any time soon. Keeping a thread alive is easy, while killing one is much more work, and most ways of doing so will eventually get you banned for spam. The admins could change things, but they seem content with one-off fixes for now (/vg/, /qst/), rather than fixing the underlying problem site-wide.

On the bright side, the situation on /mlp/ doesn't appear to have gotten any worse over the past 1-2 years.

My current approach is to enable "always infinite scroll" mode, and immediately hide any thread I see that I'm not interested in. This is especially effective against generals and CYOAs, since once you hide it, you never see it again until they make the next thread, which usually takes a while. At this point I basically never see CYOAs or greentext threads, and the infinite scrolling covers up the fact that 1/3 of the front page is hidden threads.

If you have a better solution in mind, I'm all ears. But it looks to me like it would take either a massive cultural shift or admin intervention, and I don't think either is likely to happen.
