Rarity is to the right of the man holding a globe.
Pinkie is on the chalkboard that a woman is holding up, towards the left of the image.

Here's another one. So far I've only found:
Octavia in the bottom-right corner of the second-to-last painting on the right wall.
BonBon in the round-topped painting in the top-left of the image.
Trixie on the water fountain in the painting behind the person with a blue blanket.
Gilda in the gold decoration underneath the closest vase of flowers.
Apple Bloom on a large book to the left of the person who is sitting on a chair.
Sweetie Belle on the right-hand column that flanks the second archway.

According to the uploader on deviantart, there should also be Lyra, Pinkie, Big Mac, and Scootaloo. Some commenters claimed they've found Squidward as well. Somehow I doubt the validity of that.

Trixie is on top of the man that both holds and wears a crown.
Celestia is on the hand of the woman who wears a white dress behind the men with furred hats and black/red uniforms.
Luna is hiding behind the black pillow on the ground.
Shining Armour is above the head of the man who wears an orange/white robe, between the right-hand pillars on the altar.
One Royal Guard is behind a tall candle on the left side of the altar.
Another Royal Guard is on a statue between the men in dark blue hats and the women in white dresses, towards the bottom-left of the image.
Snips is on the decorative projection towards the top-left of the leftmost arch.
Snails is in the hand of the statue of the dead person, above the man who holds a golden water pitcher, towards the centre-right of the image.
A pony that I do not recognise is between the hands of a man who holds a tall golden cross.

Pinkie and Mayor Mare are also said to be in the image, but I have yet to find them.

To the best of my knowledge this is the last of these kinds of images. So far I've only found:

Rarity - in a tiny window above the red house with laundry hanging out, on the centre-left of the tower.
Applejack - on a slope in the red part of the tower, on the inside left-top.
Big Mac - on the ground by the scaffolding at the bottom-left of the tower.
Fluttershy - flying with a flock of birds in the bottom-left of the sky.
Discord - in a tiny archway behind the second to toprightmost scaffolding.

According to the artist, there should also be the rest of the M6, Apple Bloom, Granny Smith, and several other characters and set pieces which he did not name. Several of the set pieces are so blatant that I couldn't bring myself to mention them here. If you can't see them, you need glasses.

I found Big Mac.

In the left center there is a large painting of a plaza with a monolith in the center and two fountains to either side. In the lower-right of this painting, two horses are pulling a carriage. Immediately to the right of these to horses, tangential to their outline but smaller than them, is Big Mac. If you don't believe that's supposed to be Big Mac, compare to the original http://i.imgur.com/3VcJYvi.jpg in which that red smudge with the brown horse-collar smudge is not present. It's pretty stupid. If that's what Lyra and Pinkie are like, they may as well not be in the painting.

I probably could have specified the painting that way, and it would have been clear enough, but there are also paintings to the left of it, so "third down from the top left" is ambiguous.

Similarly for the location of Big Mac, since it's a smudge you can't even tell isn't supposed to be in the painting.

Does "behind" mean the red smudge to the left of them (literally behind them) or the red smudge to the right of them (to the left of the horses from their perspective and therefore not behind them)?

Do you see why I had to say it the way I did?

The only way I could tell that *particular* red smudge was supposed to be a pony was to compare it to the original. And then after that, I couldn't determine if the smudge was supposed to be Big Mac or Pinkie (the red could be Pinkie's hair) until I could barely make out the hint of brown smudge in the middle of the reddish smudge.

It's so utterly stupid I needed to be perfectly precise since I'm literally specifying the location of a freaking smudge.
