you sound like youre projecting. mac never even implied he thought he was fighting applejack for affection, like she could only look up to one or the other. he stated she doesnt look up to him like she used to and the implication was it was much easier to look up to applejack for all her heroic feats while big mac isnt doing anything special.

This scene coupled with his dream and fantasy of being a unicorn, which on the surface might not mean much, subtly convey a desire to do more and really drive home Mac's feelings of inadequacy and longing to be more useful.

Buried beneath all the 'yep's and 'nope's is a pretty deep character if the writers ever decided to explore him some more.
