Not necessarily. I've seen writefags who brag about never watching the show and still writing for the board based on how other writefags have written the characters, and I've seen other users who claimed they've never seen the show but come here for the community and still enjoy reading greentext here.

Even outside of /mlp/ I've seen "bronies" comment on how they love the fanfiction (and other fanmade content like videos and music) despite never getting into the show.

There is no difference between a general and a thread.

I remember the beginnings of some of them. They were simple prompts, the kind you like. The thread reached the maximum number of replies and there were still greentexts in progress, so people made a new thread to continue it. Then the same thing happened, and again. By the fourth time it was a general.

A general is simply a thread with thousands of posts.
