Is it just me, or does the show depict discord more mean than

Chaos =/= being a dick. If he's fundamentally incapable of niceness why think he can be reformed to begin with. The show obviously doesn't think he doesn't have free will. And he seems to enjoy using his powers for the entertainment of others at times.

Its fine if there's some episodes of him being dickish without realizing but he seems like they can't go an episode without him still being incredibly mean. Unless their goal is to have him slowly get better over the course of many seasons. Problem with that is that he does things that actively come off still dickish. Like on purpose dickish. At least if it were accidental it would make sense. Its not clear why anyone even seems to unironically like or trust him at times.

But looking at it the point of view where he's a written character, much of what he does seems more actively vindictive than just ignorant. And the show does a bad job of making it seem like the latter. Making twilight jealous for no reason has no practical purpose. Pretending to be sick to force someone to take care of him is a stretch for him to think is reasonable, and making it as annoying as possible is tenuous at best. He should be smart enough to realize they know he was probably lying and so if they refused it was because they realized it. And in the episode where he was jealous of fluttershy making a new friend he's not painted in an even vaguely sympathetic light. Its not just that he does these things but often has no remorse whatsoever til the end.

Hell, even in the episode where he turned bad again why did he need to deliberately drop the sandwiches. That made it come off actively malevolent. What's more, him thinking "friendship = not being true to yourself" to begin with is the very thing he overcame in the episode where he was reformed to begin with. That to be nice you have to sometimes not just do whatever you feel like but that its a good tradeoff.

If this was interspaced with episodes of him being nicer it would be one thing. But literally every episode with him is about how he's an asshole who is never repentant until the very end.

You can't have a Discord thread without some cancer spewing his forced meme.

I think about it like this: The Mane 6 are the Elements of Harmony. In a show about the magic of friendship being nice to one another seems to go along with harmoniousness. So it would stand to reason that Discord, the god of chaos would be dickish in a way the poners are not. Because he stands in opposition to the harmony the Mane 6 are elements of. The fact that he's even capable of desiring their friendship in the first place is a stretch, which is why he has to constantly check his natural tendency toward being dickish to them.

He's like a tsundere y'know. He wants loved and wants to be friendly, but there's still a large part of him that hates it and is very embarrassed with the whole friendship thing. So he has to purposely act like a dick so he still seems slightly evil so that he can preserve his pride.
