The guy you replied to is saying they've never used the word "hippocampus" in official material -- only "sea pony." Thus, a "Queen of the Hippos" would more likely refer to the species that's known in-universe to have "hippo" in its name.

I'm starting to worry about the movie, it seems like they have way, waaaay too many characters and plotlines.

There's two seaponies, one of which is a queen and therefore likely to be evil or morally questionable, in true Disney fashion (like King Sombra, Queen Chrysalis) and they have to introduce Seaquestria and do a small story around the mother and her daughter.

Captain Celaeno and Capper might be squeezed together, but you still have to introduce them and their respective race, and give them a purpose in the plot. They can't JUST be the ship that takes the mane6 from Equestria to Seaquestria.

There's the Storm King and Grubber, who are probably the arch-villain and his bumbling sidekick, but Tempest Shadow is one of them too judging by her armor, and probably has some sort of redemption arc and as a reward her horn is regrown. Note her complete absence of Edge in the existing material.
So does the Storm King have an army? Led by Tempest? Or is Tempest a traitor from the start?

On top of that there's a hippogriff guard in smooth Equestria-styled armor as opposed to Storm King's and Tempest's black, sharp armor, and lacking the Storm King's insignia, so whoever he is he's not associated with the bad guys, at least not directly.
He's probably not even a proper character, it's just that hippogriffs are.

Is large-Spike also going to be part of the movie? And if so, where does his armor come from? It has to be forged in Equestria right, are they actually setting up for a war?

It'll be like the old 80's movie, then. With dragons, gnomes, seaponies, black rainbows and what have you thrown in haphazardly and discarded 5 minutes later.
Not necessarily a bad thing, and actually quite likely given Meghan's love for G1. I know a lot of older fans would be delighted if the movie had a more retro layout.

Personally, I'd prefer something with a more coherent structure. Like an extended two-parter where the entire mane6 are actually given a chance to shine, and with room to fully explore the villain, his sidekick, and Tempest's role. Of course, that wouldn't sell any Seapony or Celaeno toys though.

So, this has the "Movie" AND the "Guardians of Harmony" mark, huh.

Makes me curious - maybe the movie IS "Guardians of Harmony"? Like for a subtitle? And we'll see some of the things found in the GoH toyline so far like grown up Spike (and Twilight's wingclaws of death)?

Or, maybe GoH still only just means it's total fiction that doesn't have much to do with the established canon. And Stratus Skyranger Hippogriff Guard doesn't actually come up in the movie ever and they just slapped "Movie" on the box because that's the new default MLP logo for the time being.

The cast have shown again and again that they suck utter ass at pacing anything that's not a run of the mill 20 minute episode. Each and every single one of the two-parters (maaaybe the s1 opener being an exeption, maaaybe) and all of the EqG movies feel like they went way overboard with the stuff they wanted to tell and then had cut corners too hard. And all I've ever heard them say about the movie was stuff along the lines of "whaaat you won't believe how much shit we're cramming in there it's going to be so epic".

I'm not optimistic whatsoever. I'm hyped about all the new stuff we're going to see but it's not going to be the kind of movie you really deeply enjoy or tell anyone about or anything.

A better take at "Crystallized" Luna, at least this one has sparkles vaguely reminiscent of the show.

On top of that there's the Friendship Express toy set, Twilight's Balloon toy set, and numerous other who are connected to the show, but don't mirror it directly.
The same is probably true for the movie. Hippogriffs and maybe even Hippogriff guards will be a thing, but Stratus Skyranger probably won't be a major character, and I'm unsure about large Spike.
