Allow me to explain through a brief history of this fandom.

Back when the show started, it attracted an unexpected amount of popularity due to being actually pretty good. This caused it to draw some unwanted attention from normalfags who saw a bunch of full grown men enjoying a cartoon about ponies.

So the normalfags started hating on the budding fanbase for liking something 'girly' and 'childish'. This hate caused even more attention to be drawn to the show and it's currently small fanbase.

This attention caused a bunch of other people to being watching the show, many of whom were massive spergs and loners who thought that they could find a place for themselves in this fandom because the fans of the show were being shunned much like they have been their entire lives.

So the spergs and the loners joined in and made the fandom grow much larger, then a huge influx of normalfags who got curious what all the fuss was about and ended up liking the show were drawn in with them. This made the fandom grow to a colossal, abnormally large size where it would hit it's peak around the year 2014.

Since then the fandom has been slowly deflating and bleeding people until the only people left are one of 3 things.

1 - So connected to the community of the fandom that they can't bring themselves to leave
2 - Are hugely autistic and obsessive about the show and characters to a weird level
3 - Are casual fans of the show who rarely take part in the fandom

Problem is that the bleeding is causing more of the type 1 and 3 fans to leave than the type 2 fans. So a fandom that was once a wide ocean of people from many walks of life with a minority of autistic spergs and loners is being slowly condensed and boiled down into a fandom made largely of autistic spergs.

Though it'll still take a few years before all the more normal fans are gone. /mlp/ has a higher sperg percentage than the fandom at large though. That is why the majority of this board is so autistic.
