For me, it's partly that, and also partly because I imagine Luna retaining more of the warrior-princess mentality than Celestia (what with Celestia having actually been a part of changing society, while Luna is a thousand years behind the times and probably is still used to setting matters by hitting her enemies with a sword until they are no longer alive and/or combative). Because she's still got habits from the past, I feel like one thing would be her musical tastes still involving things like war drums, and she finds a certain familiarity in the thundering sounds of electronica.

Thanks. She always struck me as the sort who would dress for comfort, not to have a flamboyant aesthetic, since her music and such would cover all that for her, and so a tanktop with a flannel, jeans, and sneakers seemed appropriate. I just chose the color scheme because I like blue, it fits her better than orchid and yellow, and most importantly, I have more blues than any other color of pen. All it took was some clever application of what blues went where, and next thing I know, I've got her in plaid.

Looking at some of these pictures somewhat depresses me. Vinyl used to be my favorite pony for like 6 years and now I've grown more fond of Twilight.

I blame the fact they haven't fleshed out Vinyl at all past background mute pony.

None of the background ponies really get 'fleshed out,' and expecting Hasbro to do so is a recipe for failure. I'd rather have her remain a pony of the fandom and let us develop her rather than leave it to Hasbro.

Speaking of, anyone read any good Vinyl stories recently? Just finished Regard's and I'm hoping for something equally sad.

Oh of course, I know the shitstorm that would happen if they tried to give her a voice. Though like I said she can't really develop any further. Especially since she's commonly thrown into the very same roles and mindsets due to the unoriginality of people.

Maybe that's me being bitter but I've recently found Twilight a lot more relatable because she as a character is allowed to evolve and it be lasting instead of Vinyl's issue where her evolution is in one fanfiction and another just repeats the same developing process to usually the same end.

Save for Allegrezza (which began most of the relationship ideas regarding Vinyl and Octavia that most stories now just ermulate to some capacity or another.) or My Roommate is a Vampire, or the GTVS or that one series by the same author with Vinyl and Applejack being sisters, nothing has really done a crazy spin on anything pertaining to Vinyl.

Don't get me wrong, some stories are great and I enjoyed reading them, but Vinyl sadly just has hit a ceiling on her development I feel. Everyone is just kinda copying the same exact character with almost the same exact storylines resolving themselves in the same exact way. All that changes is maybe a setting.

Sadly, it is the fate of ponies to fall into archetypes. This is inevitable for every pony, not just Vinyl. But just because she's thrown into the same situations doesn't mean it's impossible for her to develop, that's ridiculous. It just, as you said, means people are unoriginal. There's endless amounts of ways for one to develop Vinyl's character, it's just a lack of people willing to do so. It's not her fault.

There's nothing wrong with wanting permanent character change or development; and it is true that it would be impossible for a character like Vinyl, but there's still plenty of stories that take Vinyl and use her personality in an interesting or new direction. It's just Sturgeon's Law in action. Any story that does something new with Vinyl is immediately buried under nine other stories where she does the same thing.

The average writer in this fandom likes to stick with what they know, but that's true for every background pony. Just look at the endless Doctor Whooves cookie cutter story, or how many Sunset redemption stories there are.

If anything, mute Vinyl was already a breath of fresh air into the character, at least for a time. It helped her break out of the archetype a little and introduced a clean, new angle to explore.

That statement is laughable at this point, really. The vast majority of the SU fanbase (speaking as a fan myself) happens to not be the kind of person who hates anything straight, male, white, and cisgender, they're just a bunch of vocal assholes who just need to shut their vag. Pretty much all of my friends who are into SU are also, at the very least, indifferent about MLP, if not fans as well. So far as I can tell, the fandoms don't really hate each other much anymore, although I do agree about the average MLP fan not needing SU, even if they're not half bad together (I've seen some good crossover stuff of things like Opal as a six-legged alicorn).
