Anon enjoyed the simple things in life, he really did. Even though most humans from his old world wouldn't count enjoying a book in a land inhabited by magical, talking ponies simple, it was for him. The ponies who he called friend had dragged him kicking and screaming into their odd version of normality and simplicity. He enjoyed it nonetheless.

Perhaps the best part about it is sitting in his warm home on Hearth's Warming Eve and enjoying a book Twilight had thrust upon him, a fire blazing in the hearth to heat his small hut.

Anon looked up from his book when a knock at the door caught his attention. It was late, and the weather ponies had brought a large snowstorm in earlier that day, so it was a surprise to find anyone outside his door. He approached the door open and, with some difficulty, pried it open. Almost immediately a rush of chilling winter air and snow blew into his home.

Anon stuck his head out into the snow, and spotted the one knocking at his door. Rainbow Dash stood several feet shorter than him, bundled in a thick coat but still shivering terribly.

Dash pushed past him, shedding her snow-covered coat, and took a seat in front of the fireplace.

Rainbow Dash ignored Anon's snark, and continued to warm her blue fur and mutli-colored mane. "Thanks, Anon! It was getting a bit cold out there." Anon sighed, and forced his door closed

Rainbow Dash shrugged, "The Weather Patrol needed me to help direct the storm today, and I couldn't make it back home without freezing so I thought I'd just come crash with you tonight."

He rubbed his bald head.

Anon smiled when Rainbow Dash went behind him, rubbing against his back and out of his sight. His attention was caught by another knock at the door.

Let us discuss best pony in way that doesn't involve fug.

I've always wondered how she would train for speed flying. I remember a coloring book that pegged her magic level on par with Twilight if not a bit higher (can't remember exactly). But it got me thinking, does she somehow unconsciously channel magic when she does her rainboom, or is it from skill alone? If it is from skill, then how would she do it? Profiling, wing flapping, staying light and thin?

I feel like their is a bit of magic to the Rainboom considering the fact that Pegasi manipulative clouds, weather, and other phenomenon. They're shown to create rainbows so one can assume that it takes ingredients to do so and that they usually have to manipulate them into the sky. With Dash, her speed and ability cumulate with the little bit of magic to give her that boost needed to hit through the sound barrier and her mane being rainbow helps produce the rainbow effect. If you look at the other Wonderbolts, some are also able to create effects in the sky while flying in a similar manner and probably have a slight in ate magic like Rainbow. Each has its own catalyst though and Rainbows happens to be 'Go real fast' whereas the others are able to create them in a normal show without possible issues arising.

Both. Her very first rainboom was purely fortuitous, her second one was a happy mix of luck and skill, and one could assume that her following rainbooms are from skill alone. I think that it's actually the same that happens with Twilight. Twilight had a sheer raw magical ability and somehow she used it to hatch Spike's egg "unconsciously" after she failed to do it willingly. Twilight studies to control her magic and be able to use it as she wants to, and Rainbow has trains to control hers and be able to perform her tricks whenever she wants to.

And I'd say that there isn't a specific "how". It's just magic, it was confirmed by Twilight's Kingdom that Pegasi's ability to fly is a form of magic (I think that's the reason why griffon's wings are so huge, they don't have magic and thus they need larger wings), so she just learned to control her magic the same way Twilight casts her spells.

It's magic, definitely magic. Skill and technique is of course a big part of it, just like with all MLP:FiM magic, but her feats are at their core pegasus magic, and they're definitely conscious. A lot of things that aren't immediately obvious are magical in nature, and Dash excels in almost every field, from creating one-pony tornadoes and twisters to altering the nature of a cloud so much that it can bounce regular non-pegasus ponies.

And yeah, I'd definitely agree RD is "up there" with Twilight when it comes to magical aptitude. Not only does she excel at everything pegasus-magic related, her original Sonic Rainboom sent a fate-sealing wave all the way from Cloudsdale to Manehattan, normally it takes an ancient relic like the Crystal Heart or similar to create Equestria-spanning effects like that. Without the aid of relics, the only pony I can think of that comes close to Dash in magnitude is Luna, whose pegasus magic can conjure up entire storms on a whim.


I'm not sure whether it's related or not, since Twilight only talks about "magical lightning", but the way she's drawn it on her blackboard in Testing Testing 1,2,3, the Wonderbolts' original magical discharge looks very similar to a Sonic Rainboom, minus the sonic and rainbow part.

As for why I personally like it, I like culture clash in AiE stories, and wildly divergent concepts of beauty is fun for that. I don't like this argument. While I think believing she might fall I love with you is fine, stripping away her personality leaves nothing but a shell of who she is and why a lot of us love her. Not the trailer or anything, just another pic from the movie, but we can finally see Rainbow's new mane, which wasn't really appreciable in the logo. Also, the cutie mark looks a bit shorter than in the show.

Firefly is the Wonderbolt founder, and IMO fills that role much better than she would the role of Dash's mother.

Wings would actually help you immensely in water if you use them right, short of sea-ponies and similar dedicated creatures pegasi would realistically be Equestria's top swimmers. There's no fundamental difference between swimming and flying, both revolve around using your body to cause as little drag as possible and displace as much of your chosen medium as possible.

A good real-world example is penguins, who actually do "fly" underwater and are extremely good at it.

It's literally impossible to swim in waters like that, Dash performs a superhuman feat by just staying above the surface most of the time and not breaking every bone in her body. Her technique in >>29525525 and pic related looks good too.

But yeah, would be a good idea for green. Maybe she's only swam in clouds before S1? The technique for cloudswimming isn't perfectly transferable to water, such a simple detail as when and when not to breathe is something a cloud-swimmer wouldn't even have to consider, while it's the first thing you learn when you swim in water.

Is it reaching a speed of 500 feet per second in two seconds? Seems a bit imprecise, and measures final maximum speed.

Is it like a vertical drag race? Climb (or dive) 500 feet in as short a time as possible?
Sky Stinger covers 500 feet in just two seconds, and from a standing start. Average speed of 250 feet per second or 170 miles per hour over those two seconds. It's not a linear acceleration, and the first fraction of a second will see a lot more acceleration than the last fraction of a second, but with these numbers it's safe to say the pony is going over 250 miles per hour at the end of the two seconds.

And these numbers aren't enough to impress Dash. Because Dash accelerates to over the speed of sound, over 770 miles per hour, in less time than that. Just how insanely fast is she?
