Last time on Pirates...

The party trekked northeast along the road of an old ruin of the ancient Windies' civilization. They were on their way to the Gusties' half of the island, in order to figure out how and why the Gusties were able to summon their Loa demons and attack the Misties, even though they hadn't been able to attack the Misties to that degree before.

Along the way, they encountered a pack of skeletal dinosaurs of all kinds of varieties. After defeating the dinos, they explored a half-buried ziggurat, belonging to the Windie tribe, that described a series of rituals by which the Windies established who their queen was. The rituals were a test of Vitality, Wisdom, Steadfastness and Kindness. They decided to take on the test along their way across the island.

You stand before the mural on the temple wall, depicting in hieroglyphs the journey that would-be queens endured in their quest for power. She must visit each of the four temples, and complete the quest therein. Based on the map hieroglyph on the mural, it seems as though you are in a temple near the center of the island. There is one to the southeast (in the Gusties' territory), one directly north, and one to the northeast.

In the upper right corner of the room, light dribbles down from a large crack in the ceiling, and rocks pile up toward it, which look climbable. The temple continues down the hallway which you just came from.

You found a sunny spot in the jungle to meditate, and the drone of flies and insects becomes a continuous, calming drone of white noise.

Cloud skims over the murals not paying much attention to the finer details, or most of the details.
"Are we bothering with this? Seems a bit out of the way, unless its got some links with those Loa spirits."
He asks the others.
>>
>>29439225
"So... do we have any idea where to look for the next test?" he asks, ruffling his wings a little "Or do we just keep heading for the Gusties' side of the island?"
>>
>>29439225
>>29439281
"Let's head for the southeast temple. We can get rid of them gusties along the way." Rin says, beginning her climb back up through the large crack.

>>29439259
"Coming or not, I'm going to become this islands new queen! I'll have the queen's treasure if it's the last thing I do!" Rin shouts, her greed fueling her enthusiasm for temple hunting.

After lighting some incense, Steve flattens out against the jungle floor and thinks upon the teachings of Sugar Hoof and the events of the days past.

He comes to the conclusion that working hard now will not always result in less work later and falls asleep.

Cutlass lays uncomfortably on the ground while everyone reads the hieroglyphics. With her change in size, she is afraid to stand tall, lest she accidentally touch any of the ancient walls, ceilings, or pillars of this unwashed place. Who knows what bugs may be crawling in an old buildings such as this?

"Yes, this is all quite fascinating," Cutlass says, her words dripping with sarcasm. "But, does this really concern us? Wasn't the plan to raid a village and leave?"

>>29439259

"I don't know what spirits you're referring to, but if we aren't going to do anything with this, then we should discuss it outside. It's quite... cramped in here..." she trails off as she fidgets awkwardly with her shredded dress, trying desperately to maintain some amount of modesty.
>>
>>29439225
Cerulean takes the odd egg she found with her. She wasn't sure if it would hatch or not, but it would look pretty nice in her groto back home regardless.

>>29439259
"Might as well. I mean, it is in Gustie turf, right? And we're heading in there anyway. Who knows, maybe we might find some neat Gustie stuff to take home!"
>>
>>29439297
>>29439290

"Treasure?" Cutlass says, looking up from her own dress with a far more interested demeanor. "Well, now you ARE speaking my language. This queen business sounds pretty melodramatic though. Can't we just steal the treasure. It's not like we need to be adored by a bunch of breezies... or whatever these things are."
>>
>>29439290
Alder nods a little, before chirping happily "T-Treasure sounds nice, I would say!"
>>
>>29439290
"Whatever floats your boat."
Cloud says with a shrug.

>>29439297
"The gusties have some bad spirit things they called to attack us, which is why we're walking across this island in the first place. To stop them."
Cloud glances up and down Cutlass.
"You're the one who came in here all big. Can't complain when you should have expected an old temple ot not take giants."

>>29439310
"Yea, but hen we'll have to walk *all* over this island for the other temples. Just seems like a lot of work."
>>
>>29439354
"Phooey. When has some hard work ever kill anypony," she says with a pout and a flick of her tail.
>>
>>29439354

"Well I'm not the one who made me this way!" Cutlass objects. "You weirdo," she adds after a moment.
>>
>>29439310
"What kind of things do you think the Gusties would have? H-Hopefully their things are larger than the Misties' things... not that I dislike the gift I received, o-of course!"
>>29439354
"Perhaps we might find reasons to go that way, anyways?"

It occurs to you that the Misties might also know something about these trials and temples, and would be the go-to people to ask.

As you crawl out of the crack in the ground, you find yourself in more thick jungle. To the west you see the hill on which you fought those skeleton dinosaurs. The Gusties' village is further to the southeast. As you trek through the shrubbery, the path soon dissipates into the thickness of the undergrowth, suggesting nobody's gone down this way in a long time. Nobody your size anyway. As you proceed, the air becomes more dry and rougher, and sharp breezes grate against you like wisps of sandpaper.

"Then it's settled, we spill gustie blood and search for the queen's treasure!"

Rin begins to search around as she treks through the abandoned path, taking slow deep breaths as the air gets a little rougher to breathe.

Cerulean hums in thought.
"No idea. I never even knew Misties existed until now. But I'm sure there is bound to be something neat!"

>>29439376
"I suppose so..."

>>29439387
Cloud marches through the shrubbery as the group decides to follow the trials, pushing through the rough growth with plenty of complaints.
"Ugh, can't walk through this place and now its feeling like a desert. This island is just full of unpleasentness."

"W-Well I certainly do not want the title... I do not think coming back to my tribe a 'Queen' would do me any good." he mumbles, letting out a nervous little warble
>>29439415
"Yeah, I will bet! This whole island seems to be full of surprises, anyways!" he chirps out, before coughing sharply and frowning "I am used to harsh conditions, but none similar to this... this place feels so suffocating." he mumbles, before tucking his wings in a little tighter. Luckily for him, he's not really large enough for the more dense foliage to be a big problem

The thick coils of grass and foliage grow coarser and tougher as you forge ahead, causing you to trip often as vines snare your ankles. Bristly plants and angry needles grate at your skin, gnawing at your legs with many bright red scratches. It's as if the jungle itself doesn't want you to come this way.

As you forge ahead, though, you hear something like a subtle stomping and a rustling. Soon the overhanging leaves and fruits from the trees obscure your view making it impossible to see more than a few inches in front of your own noses.

Eventually, you are forced to stop, before an unnatural and unusual sight. The path ahead is blocked by dozens of trees all lined up in a row, right next to one another. It's no fence; the trees are unmistakably growing out of the ground, but they're all in a row, and block your path.

>>29439462
The dream quickly becomes a nightmare, however, as a thick pressure starts to press onto your chest and front. You're in a deep cave, squeezed into some crevice of rock barely wide enough for you to squeeze through; the cave rocks and quakes, trembling violently. The floor lowers and then raises, as if to crush you against the upper wall of the crevice. Roll 1d10+1

"But you're not at...whatever job had weather and junk. You're here now. So I say grow away!"

"I hate this jungle!" Cutlass screeches as the bottom portion of her dress is completely torn away. Then, she looks up and realizes she's inches away from crashing into the "fence".

"Grrr! Who put this in my way!?" she shouts as her horn glows. She telekinetically punches the tree.

"Right now I think that'd be a bad idea. Already getting scratched up enough, don't need more of myself to get into these vines."

>>29439565
Cloud falls back behind the others, letting them clear the path up some to lower the resistance he has to walk through. Doesn't help too much as visibility cuts down, even for a bat like him. Stumbling forward as everypony else stops, he looks out to the trees in a neat row to block their progress.
"this island really doesn't like us."
He thinks a moment, can't really change the weather to clear out trees anytime fast. But, if Rin is already gung-ho for that treasure, making her body match that drive would make this far easier. His eyes take a light orange glow, focusing his magic on the dragon.

"Oh fine. But don't complain to me if you get tired."

>>29439633
"No biggie," she says as her tail makes contact, "just keep a lookout for something then. We are kinda in Gustie turf, so maybe they might try and get the drop on us like a sneaky flounder hiding in the sand."

"Weirdo," she mutters haughtily in response.

Rin huffs at Cutless. "Just save your lip for the gusties. If you can do that, maybe I'll let you take whatever dresses we find in the Queen's Treasure." Rin says. "You look like you could use a replacement."

As you attack the trees, they do not break, but rather... bend? Their trunks stretch back like rubber, absorbing the impact. Scowling faces etch into the tree trunks, and everyone but Cutlass recognizes them as the caricatures that are the Loa's faces. The trees shiver, and their leaves and branches all coil up against the trunks. The trees are all sucked back into the ground, leaving large gaping holes in the soil where they once were.

The ground all around you begins to quake and rumble, gentle at first but quickly accelerating to a tremor.

>>29439586
As you stomp against the floor of the cave, your vision fades, and a sense of grogginess and disorientation grips you. You awake in a dim cavern, bound up in a tight cocoon made of leaves and vines, with your head exposed. You can't turn your head much, but you see that you are being carried from below atop what looks like a tree. The tree slithers along, with its roots wiggling behind it like a snake's body. The cavern is full of stone ruins, such as ziggurats and even whole chunks of city, made of beautiful teal and purple stone. It looks as though they dropped in from above due to an earthquake, perhaps.

"But, accurate."

"That's right! You better run, you no-good Loa thingies!"

As the ground rumbles, Cerulean steadies herself.
"I think we better get moving. And fast!"
She then proceeds to run forward, jumping over the holes left behind from the trees.
>>
>>29439676
"For you maybe."

"This is just cruel friend, a boy can't even sleep in the middle of a humid bug-infested jungle in plain view of any predator without getting predated upon anymore!"
>>
>>29439713

"I'm not the one who grows ponies and then ogles them," she accuses angrily.

>>29439675

Cutlass's eyes grow wide as a face appears in front of her. When the tree sinks into the ground, she shouts, "WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!?"

She looks around quickly as the tremors start. "Let's go while we have the chance!"

She jumps over the hole and runs in the direction they've been going. [1d10+1]

Rin barely manages to yank the giant Cutlass away from the trembling jungle floor before all the trees that sunk underground jut right up through where you were just standing. As they extend to their full height and uncoil themselves, their Loa faces cackle and sneer derisively. A few of them reach up with their branches, pluck the fruit growing off of themselves, and throw it at you.

[1d10] [1d10]

>>29439722
The tree climbs up a set of stone stairs, then eventually sets you down atop a slab of purple and teal rock. It appears to have been some kind of sacrificial altar, judging by ancient bloodstains stretching all over the slab. To your right, there's more of the purple and teal stone architecture, leading up to a kind of palace. Said palace appears to be sticking up through the ground, leading to fresh air. You see mounds of treasure up on the stairs leading up to the palace top.

The fruits are blown back in their wooden faces, and the four trees that threw those fruits become paralyzed as the fruits break on their faces and coat them in an unnerving purple sap. Cerulean pummels the trees and Cutlass slices off one of the trees' branches, keeping it from throwing more things at her. The four paralyzed trees sink back into the ground, snarling in annoyance.

The other Loa trees hoot in gladness and amusement as they see their brothers abused so. They reach out to other, non-possessed trees, and start raiding them for things to throw at you as you float in the air (save for Cerulean).

Trees A and B throw pony pirate skeletons at you all.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME SHADOW!" Said Steve believing he was now engaged with darkness itself.

Indeed, something begins to creep out of the shadows, but as it inches out of the darkness into the light, it vanishes, only allowing you a brief instant to survey its body as it wriggles forward. Its body is some kind of jungle cat, as big as a mammoth, easily. Its skin is putrid and bumpy, like a ship rotted by seawater, and it's a murky moldy color.

Once it's vanished entirely, the only indication you have of it are three dangling lights, floating in a rough triangle formation, but they swing like a pendulum, back and forth in a hypnotic rhythm, making it hard to track its exact location.

You hear a thunderous clacking and rumbling of drums coming from the southeast, followed by a low, musical chatter. As another ring of drums and music rocks out from the southeast, the Loa-Trees look at one another, making contemplative noises as though they were discussing what to do. But, once Rin grows to three times her size, their expressions turn to one of wild, wide-eyed intimidation and terror. The rest start to slip into the ground in their rush to split from Rin's immense stature.

The song shifts to something more relaxing and laid-back as you approach. The ground becomes more arid, and the ground dries up. There are still plants around, but you notice they have actually been preserved from being so dry. A cycle of hot wind surrounds the area, acting like a security barrier.

Past the wind, you see a rough-and-tumble pirate crew, mostly ponies but some monkeys as well, about half a human's size. The monkeys are all dressed like pirates. Accompanying them are small Breezie-sized ponies, whose coats are mostly in shades of sandy brown. Instead of insect wings, they have a set of rotating wings which spiral like the blades of a helicopter in their back, and each wears a set of flight goggles, made out of hollowed-out seeds. They're all having a party. These must be the Gusties.

While the Misties' village was small and built out of the roots of large trees, the Gusties inhabit stone buildings and homes made out of purple and teal stone, like what you saw in the temple you visited earlier. There's advanced infrastructure and even running water here. Things look quite comfortable as they pass around food and toss meat to the myriad birds who perch on the stones, overlooking the party.
>>
>>29440526

"You!" she says, but she has nothing to say. "Rrrrrgh!"
>>
>>29440549
"Wait...these are the feared and evil Gusties?" Cerulean asks, looking to everyone else.
"But...but they look so cute like the Misties did! And...I don't think sharing is all that evil."

Cerulean carefully approaches, waving her tail like a creature known as a 'human' would wave a hand in the air as a sign of greeting.
"Hello! Uhmm...we liked your music! Not big fans of those trees, but the music is nice," she says in an attempt to break the ice, then looks at the stone buildings, "actually, your homes remind me of my home. Kinda reminding me of the coral reefs I used to swim in."

"Say, could you maybe not attack us? It's been a long day, and I was hoping to have some fun when I heard the music."
>>
>>29440549
Alder is a little surprised by the view. The arid envvironment doesn't bother him much, but the hot winds do. He lets out an uneasy little noise, before giving the Gusties a confused look, and nervously waving "U-Uhm... hello? You are the Gusties, yes?" he asks, his tail curling around one of his hindlegsnervously

Cloud keeps to the back of the back of the group as they march towards the music, feeling it as ominous given the Loas that they just faced. Once they past into the clearing, the Gusty camp coming into view, Cloud is a bit thrown off at how similar it feels to the Misties.

Having bummed around Equestria enough to know one can act casual in whatever environment they get used too, he stays on guard given how viciously they attack the Misties. But, in one attempt to maybe calm them or at least make them not attack right away, his eyes glow. Cloud attempts to call in some rain clouds, maybe some water to freshen up this area might help.

As you approach, the Gusties part the barrier of wind in order to allow you to enter. They speak with dignified Itailian accents and grammatically correct speech, unlike the Misties, but much like the Misties, they bristle with excitement and curiosity. They bombard you with questions as they float around you, their dignified chattering overlapping into a buggy buzz.

Then, Cloud's rain summoning coincides neatly with Rin's dramatic and destructive appearance. Gusties, birds, monkeys and pirates all panic and scatter, screeching and shouting in terror and surprise at the giant dragon.

Amid the chaos, however, a Gustie wearing a tiny leather jacket, riding atop a sparrow, starts flying straight toward Rin.
