Because they're idiots who never seen, never mind touched real horse? This whole 'no eat meat' belongs in trash can, first because real horses are mostly omnivores, second, because the more intelligent the animal is, the smaller part of it diet is made of plant matter. These morons should ask themselves, what we consider smart, cows and sheep, or animals like ravens, dolphins, dogs, or pigs all of which eat only meat, or are omnivores?

Ditto for idiotic meme 'horse can survive on grass only', first doing so requires it eat grass 12 hours per day, as it's not terribly caloric, second exposes it to all manner of pathogens and parasites, third horses have very delicate insides and plugging them full of grass and leaves is excellent way to kill them:

That's why working and riding horses eat only really caloric stuff, like grain and specially prepared feed, that doesn't take up a lot of space and doesn't force them to eat constantly. Meat would be perfect for this, BTW, but thanks to prion scare we don't feed farm animals bad meaty parts anymore (good ones being sent to human consumption, consideration that wouldn't exist in Equestria).
