MLP is a toy line with a cartoon on the side (also shirts, etc.). Besides Monster High and Paw Patrol, MLP appears to be the most popular brand among young girls (notably, none of it is EQG).

Disney extends its movie franchises as long as possible. Many of Disney's animated movies (including Pixar) have been turned into multi-movie franchises to make maximum profit. Then, once the movies go dry, they make spinoff series of them (Lion King). Disney looks for money, if they owned the MLP franchise, they'd keep it going until it stops making money, which is unlikely since it's a multi-generational franchise like, say, Barbie.
