Western cartoons usually have a higher percentage of males in the fandom.
It's about 75%-25% on average.

Eastern cartoons fare a better and are close to 50%-50% splits among animefags.
The reason is probably that female-oriented anime exists and female-oriented cartoons tend to be shit.

People who'd previously not watch anything related to the media can use these less neutral shows as a starting point of getting into the greater fandoms.

Fandom is mostly adult males. Not so sure what the demographics are for those that just watch it, but I'd guess adult males make a good chunk of it too nowadays.

I'm pretty sure MLP:FIM does have way more girls than the standard cartoon split.
The thing is, the show is a hit with both demographics so the traditionally more numerous male part also contains a lot of non-/co/ people and thus the average stays largely the same.

If you've been to the old MLPG threads on /co/, you'd notice there have been an unusually high concentration of female anons as well.
/co/ is one of the boards with higher number of females overall but almost all of them have been active in an MLP thread at some point.
