There are a few exceptions. Goth pony and her sunny sister from the new boutique in Canterlot episode both wore good dresses, love those. Fluttershy's original "haute couture" would have been nice if done seriously and in a suitable color, since that style is supposed to be as extravagant as it was.
Even when she tries to imitate free-flowing pegasus fashion she overdoes it about a hundredfold, like pic related.

I think, the only outfit Rarity herself has worn that I really like is >>29390754 .

I mean, have your own opinion and all, but saying most of her costumes are gaudy and garish, with the only example being that one that was practically meant to me, I can't I think you're correct at all. Most of them in Rarity Investigates are pretty simplistic, and all her S1 gala dresses are pretty great. They're not really gaudy and garish at all. Especially considering how successful she is in the show.

I'm all for non-gender-normative clothing, mares (and women) can absolutely rock a suit or a trenchcoat and look good in it.
But not like this. Rarity has copied a noir defining trope piece by piece, and ruined it with girly bows, a huge collar, and color where there should be none.
It could work a bit better in darker red, but the ribbon on her hat is almost pink.

That dress has 3 layers in completely different colors. The dotted piece doesn't mesh well with the rest, the collar is simply too much, and the massive bow on her chest could easily be cut down to half and would in my opinion look all the better for it. Same with the shoes, at least lose the bows on those. Our eyes are drawn all over the piece with no place to focus.

Good one. Unlike 1. this one is a faithful recreation of the genre, even shown in black and white for maximum faithfulness. Note how ACTUALLY discrete this one is compared to her other ones. The dress is a single-colored affair with a small, unadorned belt and a discrete collar. Because the rest is so discrete, our attention is immediately drawn to her headpiece and eyes, exactly as intended.

Twilight and Fluttershy look fine, but would be improved by wearing less. Fluttershy having her usual manestyle instead of this unkempt bit, getting rid of the different colored flowers on her skirt or at least have them in the same color, etc. would improve her dress.
Applejack looks like shit. She's got fucking boots with spurs, a saddle, her hat, apples, and a braided tail. Like she's trying to be some cartoon parody of a Western + Clown mashup.
Pinkie doesn't just look like a parody, she looks like a parody of a parody. Like something taken from a bad pop or jpop video or something. Closest I can think of at the moment is Avril Lavigne's Hello Kitty, at least her skirt, taken and blown up to ALL of Pinkie. There's lollipops on her fucking dress.
Also suffers another common issue we see in a lot of Rarity's designs, way too many fucking layers. The frontpiece is blue and white, then there's a pink layer, followed by a red one, followed by the massive candy-waist, followed by the actual skirt in red again. Shoes could have been pink and discrete (we're meant to notice the dress, aren't we?), but large blue bows were added because Rarity can't into subtlety.
Dash is similar to AJ in philosophy, but a bit better in execution. Clashing themes of sleek Greek-inspired headpiece and hoof-wrapping (on their own, I think these two elements would look really good on Dash. Maybe wrap the rear legs as well, and get rid of all the rest. All of it) meets soft rainbow and puffy clouds, topped off huge plastic grapes. The top of her mane doesn't even go together with the bottom.

Twilight's Winter Wrap-Up attire is a good one.
Also, griffon fashion, almost all of it. A stylish scarf goes SUCH a long way.
Considering ponies are usually naked, it takes very little to make them appear dressed-up. We see it quite often with male ponies especially who wear only a suit-like collar and nothing more. Clean, professional, stylish, without being gaudy.

3 has one feature that immediately strikes out, the headpiece which is designed to "catch" you in her eyes.
1 has the bow on the hat and the high collar, so one's eyes are immediately drawn to her neck. Next up one is likely to notice the bow on her chest, her eyes are almost obscured by the unnecessarily wide-brimmed hat.
Contrast to what she was going for. 1. is a poor imitation, whereas 3. is a spot-on imitation.

Clouds and grapes go together as round fluffy shapes. If you're going for colorful the rainbows and grapes can if necessary coexist.
But the hooves and headpiece have sharp edges and contours, and in my opinion work a lot better for Dash, both personality and hairstyle-wise, but not together with the round grapes.

I always took the gaudiness as part of the ponyworld, they don't wear clothes as often so when they do they need to be flashy as fuck.
Her Sonic Rainboom costume was overdone purposefully, to be honest. The wings themselves are really colorful, so she completes that butterfly image by pimping herself to ridiculous levels. I don't like the design, but I understand why it is the way it is.
Her Nightmare Moon bun makes her older for a reason - she needs to appear adult and authoritarian. That's the mood of the timeline altogether.

That dress completely passed me by, and I think it might actually be my favorite on her. If it weren't so late here in Yooroopland I'd have to rewatch that episode. Gift of the Maud Pie, right?

It's more of a Canterlot-specific thing, which is where Rarity draws most of her inspiration. Rarity does turn it up to 11 though, which I guess does explain her success in certain extravagant circles.
Manehattan is more turn of the last century - industrialist - thingy, I'm sure it has a name, but not so many dresses and not so gaudy.
Ponyville is very neutral and has very little clothing overall.
Appleloosa of course is Western all the way.
Griffons typically go for one accessory only, either a hat or cap of some sort or some type of scarf or neckwear.

We need to go the opposite direction. Don't buff everyone to Twilight's level, nerf her back.
And I know this is usually a >faustfag opinion, but that's the only way. Make everyone OP princesses and while the inner group dynamic would be somewhat restored, or balanced, their interaction with the outer world would be even more dumb than it is now.
The only way to go back to that charm is by making them small ponies in a big world again. That of course won't happen, so we're stuck with this forever. They'll never be just that old group of friends again.
So at least let me have Rarity. She had a steady development, learned her lessons along the way and got where she is thanks to her own hard work. Inside she's still that slightly dramatic, slightly silly, witty fashionable high-class wannabe, and the moment the show takes it from me is the moment I'm walking away.

I just loved everything about her. She's kind and caring, and of course extremely generous, but that doesn't stop her from loving the spotlight herself a little bit. I ended up watching the whole show just to see her more.

Did you watch the episode? While I wasn't exactly talking about that episode, the entire plot is only set into motion because Rarity is the only one to give a damn to notice that Rainbow Dash is unwell, when everyone else didn't notice or didn't care. She does get self-absorbed in the episode, but that's one of her character traits, she often can get a little self-absorbed in the spotlight, and thinks her way is the best way for everyone, which sometimes is right, other times is wrong. But even then she meant well, and like I said, the whole thing only was set into motion with her friends even bothering to watch Rainbow because Rarity was the only one who noticed Fluttershy's support wasn't enough for Rainbow.

Everyone has episodes where they act a bit bad to learn a lesson, but I still maintain Sonic Rainboom was very good for her, and she isn't "the most self-absorbed pony".

On top of that, the lesson of the episode is not only that Dash needs to believe in her own ability as well. It most certainly is a Rarity and Rainbow Dash episode (with Rainbow in the forefront) but it's very clear that this is obviously the first Rainbow/Rarity episode, and again, provides valuable insight on both their characters that could not be the same if it was a generic OC. It just wouldn't work, it wouldn't be as good an episode.

All I'm saying is consider rewatching the episode with the character in mind, not just your initial reaction. Before you even call me bias for Rarity, this was literally the first episode I ever saw, and I was literally able to deduct these very same conclusions after my initial viewing of it, which is why I grew to favor her so much. I felt like Rarity was one of the more interesting and entertaining characters to watch.

On top of that, to back it up, that kind of self-absorbed "my way is the best way" carries over to other episodes as well, like Sisterhooves Social, so it's not just a one off thing to explain it here.

No pony is perfect, but to sincerely think of her as nothing more than a shallow, self-absorbed bitch in the episode is honestly pretty shallow yourself, if you'd do that I'm saying.

She's the best one for chatting. Take the M6 - you can't really talk with Pinkie or Fluttershy, Dash would get bored quickly unless she's talking about stunts and would be more of a listener because what does she have to say on most topics, Twilight lacks social skills and would get lost in some nerdy shit so you would have to put her back on tracks too often, AJ would be alright if you don't mind drowning in countryisms, because she at least knows stories, knows ponies, and can pick up on social cues.

One thing I will argue against is that due to Rarity's social skills, small talk isn't just weather and generally the most basic bullshit. Because unlike the others, provided that she has at least some knowledge of the topic, she can talk about anything. She can recognize what bores the other side, and steer clear of such topics. She's able to throw various topics around until you take the bait. That's why she's better at it than the others.

Look at how casually and good she seemed to hit it off with that wonderbolt in Rarity Investigates, able to casually befriend him by talking about his scarf, when Rainbow was completely nervous to even approach him. Granted Rarity didn't know who he was, but that's clearly showing that she's not just "how's the weather". Spike's input in Suited for Success was so low literally anybody else could do it. Or nobody at all had to.
A more important figure in Rarity's career is Fancy Pants, anyways. He propelled her up while she stayed in Canterlot. And also Sapphire Shores, Photo Finish, and most importantly herself, designing dresses for everyone everywhere, from her friends for the Gala to the Manehattan competition.

We don't know how exactly Spike told Hoity, but I doubt it was something along the lines of "Yo Hoity my man, I got this chick in Ponyville making some bitchin dresses, come check it out, we'll have a donut later since we're such good friends", if you understand what I'm hinting at. This is completely untrue, the plot of Suited for Success comes from the Mane 5 pushing Rarity to do things that she knows isn't good. The fashion show was already planned from the very beginning. Spike's interaction was only like halfway through the episode, introducing Hoity Toity so that Rarity would be even more ashamed during the fashion show, after the horrible dresses were made. Saying Spike "enabled the entire plot" is a gross exaggeration, and it really seems like the statement of someone who didn't watch the episode. Spike's contribution to the episode was only added shame for Rarity, not enabling the plot. The fashion show was already going to happen, all Spike did was allowed Hoity Toity to appear.

Well, you start with the cold open which is just a boring exposition ride. Then you get to Cadance identifying Twilight with their stupid dance, which Chrysalis herself witnessed Twilight do back in ACW, and they've been doing it ever since whenever they meet in public. How is this still your 100% guarantee that Twilight is real?
They then introduce Thorax, which basically breaks everything we knew and assumed about changelings from season two. A mindless drone that feeds on love has an epiphany and decides to rather starve to death. Okay, I guess every factory line has a few faulty ones. So Spike takes this faggot to the Empire to feed his addiction. Reminder that changelings devour love, they also drain your energy and cloud your mind while they grow more powerful. Nothing wrong with that, right?
Cadance then shows Thorax her baby, for some reason, and of course his disguise breaks because he's a starving animal that can't control himself. Then Spike sings one of the gayest terrible songs of the show, rivaled only by his interpretation of the Cloudsdale anthem and everything is forgiven.
Suddenly it's okay for a changeling to drain love from everyone around him, and it's actually so much okay that they will even let him hang around the Crystal Heart, that is the only reason why the Empire is even still (or again) on a map. Even after they had seen that he can't control himself, they will just let him feed on all the love until he spins out of control. Or that's what should have happened, according to S2 lore.
Plus now changelings can shapeshift into inanimate objects, that's fucking cool and not bullshit at all. And why did everyone so scared for McFlurry? She doesn't radiate the love, it's everyone's love for the baby that's in the air. Why would the changelings target the baby? On the contrary, they want to keep her safe, because they need others to love her.
Let's not forget that this started the reformation of changelings into faggot deer.

It remind of season 4 in terms of great episodes only to be follow by okay episode and basically due new writers as the old ones all gone. Other then that I thought season six overall was pretty good.

It's a mixed bag, really. Overall I find it less entertaining than S5. It had some of the best episodes, but also some of the worst episodes of the show. Like S4 was just mostly average and okay, but S6 is such a hit or miss. The writing is worse, some of the episodes are just stupid and inconsistent, the opening two-parter was outright shit and the closing one showed so much promise only for the second part to tank. I'm not opposed to the concept of Glimmer but it really rubs me the wrong way how they introduced and treated her throughout season six. Her backstory is bonkers, and it's like they don't want to make her a main character but then again don't want to write her out because they have plans for her, so she's just there when the plot needs her, and usually just being a sad sack of self-doubting shit because she hasn't had her redemption yet (before S6 finale), so she can't even get any real character.
But there are some episodes I have enjoyed. No Second Prances, Saddle Row Review, Buckball Season, Top Bolt, the Christmas episode, S6E25. That isn't a full list, mind you, just the few off the top of my head that I remember.
Average it out and it's a resounding "meh". But the amount of good episodes out of 26 is so little this is almost like a double season three. Keep throwing shit at a wall and some of it will eventually stick. I'm afraid that's what is happening here.
