Stands are basically psychic powers on steroids. Canonically, they're a psychic manifestation of a person's willpower and courage. Each Stand is unique in appearance, and in the power it grants.

For example. [CRAZY DIAMOND] looks like (pic related) and has the ability to "fix" everything except it's user. In reality, it's method of fixing things is just reverting them to a previous point in time when they weren't broken. Somehow, he can use this power to merge objects together, or just turn off this power altogether, and use his Stand to break through walls and stuff.
By contrast, the Stand I made is [BENZIN]. It gives its user the power to construct and deconstruct things using shadows. That means both deconstructing objects that are in shadows, and later reconstructing them, as well as constructing things from a tangible material made from shadow. And if there's any accusations of being OP, the villains of the series are often given abilities that control time.
