First thing you should do however is getting off this board. People here hate episodes and seasons that are generally perceived to be the best of them all, so constantly listening to them might set you up for feeling disappointed about certain episodes without even having watched them beforehand.

Most people I have seen getting into the show later on usually appreciate all seasons fairly evenly as they have their nostalgia glasses turned off, but here people either despise or love seasons and episodes, so just leave and watch it on your own for the real, unbiased experience.

Honest answer: the show is much better than a toy commercial needs to be. Part of the fun was that a bunch of us got caught off guard by that, got sucked into it and all reacted to it at the same time online. The show remains what it always was, though many will make the case that the first two seasons, which uneven had a magic it has since lost. Regardless part of what made the show such a thing was the real time reaction to it and fan created works online. The fact that you weren't the only weirdo who got sucked into this shit as a grown (or almost grown) man - you were part of countless others, some crazy autistic, others relatively normal seeming. Some showed their love of it publicly, others who hid their power level. But all were united by this very improbable obsession.

Today all that's left of those people are latecomers and folks like me who want off the ride but can't manage to leave. So getting into pony now is missing a big part of what made it magic in the first place - the interaction with others who were also going, "Holy shit I can't believe I love this" at the same time. You won't get to participate in that so much. The shared experience was a big part of it. And the creators responding to us. Without that you can appreciate the show, but you probably won't get the fanatical devotion it inspired.

The show still has a very decent plot and setting for someone interested in what would be called slice of life genre. It has a unique setting and a cast type that I don't think I've really seen in combination before. Can you tell me that you've seen something that is a high fantasy show revolving around woman in their late teens and early twenties who are pushing forward in their life choices, all while having small adventures with one another here and there and growing closer. There is not a single other show like it in its combination of plot, setting, and characters. It makes itself unique in that aspect and that is what really got me into the show. The reason it's gone down hill is because they failed to capture the characters correctly so many times, the focus of the story shifted from main 6 centric to lore and worldbuilding, and it lost and of the pacing it once had to keep an episode rolling in a smooth way. You can only take so much before you get worn down and I would still reccomend seasons 1-3 to anyone and give them a maybe on season 4 if they really liked it.
