In the season 5 finale "The Cutie Re-Mark", Twilight visits several doomed Equestria's that were created as a result of different villains going uncontested by the main six. The final alternate future we witness is one where everything in Equestria has been annihilated.

This final timeline is a result of Celestia being forced to use the elements of harmony herself, in a futile attempt at stopping one super powerful villain after the next. The final straw is when she is forced to finally destroy Nightmare Moon for good. This, unfortunately, was more than she could bare.

maybe the barren wasteland ending is meant to be glimglamronpa's: this is how the world looks when everyone is forced out of their natural talents (and don't tend crops and stuff like that). i do remember equal-town being sort-of desert-y.

Each timeline was different from each other though, despite being spawned from the same inciting incident (that being that Dash didn't Rainboom). We even see in one alternate timeline Celestia somehow managed to redeem Luna without the need for the Twilight and her friends, but the kingdom is still destroyed by Discord.

The problem with this idea is that everyone sucking at their job would only make the kingdom unlivable and abandoned, at worst. There is literally nothing left in the last timeline; no grass, no buildings, no animals, nothing.
