Back in 2011, when autism levels are off the charts, most collectively saw this fandom as a statement of liking whatever the fuck we wanted and to hell with anyone who didn't like it.

This was around the time of 4chan forcing pony threads off of the chan to Ponychan.

The word you're looking for is stagnating. It's not anywhere close to dead and likely won't die for many years yet. The fandom plateaued about 4 years ago though and it's been more or less coasting at the same level since then. You're never gonna get back those early days when it was new and the fandom was constantly growing, the show's popularity has spread about as far as it can. Enthusiasm is still fairly high even if the fandom isn't growing anymore, we have plenty of fresh content to keep people invested: new seasons of the show, a movie coming, and more spin-offs, etc. The fandom likely will not start shrinking until the well of content dries up. After the show ends you will definitely see a contraction, but I don't see this fandom dying out anytime soon.

Fandoms come and go. They grow and shrink as established franchises get rebooted and then wind down. G4 had its moment, but it's on the way out. The movie might spark renewed interest, or maybe G5 will be great and bring a bunch of people back.

Steven Universe isn't anywhere near as big though. It's just this thin layer of fad-chasing tumblrites who jumped from MLP to SU, making SU the new hip thing on tumblr (and therefore /co/), but SU lacks a real fanatical core to its fandom like what MLP has now. Remember, the brony fandom started on 4chan, it became a virulent strain of madness on this site long before it exploded onto the wider internet. By comparison SU is a rootless weed drifting in the wind. Sooner or later it'll hit the ground and that'll be the end of it.

Nah, definitely not my first, but it hit its stride during my high school years, and strongly influenced me as a person. The fandom itself arguably played a bigger role than the show itself.

It won't be on its way out for a few more years yet. Retiring G4 at this stage would be like shooting themselves in both feet. Ideally they'd want to retain as many of the current fans as possible rather than having to start from scratch, so if that's the goal it's still too soon to phase out G4 since you'd only end up alienating and pissing them off at this point.

Yeah, I was the same way in middle school and high school with The Powerpuff Girls. Probably wouldn't be an artist if not for obsessively drawing them for years. Everything was nice and comfy and I was part of a community, but then the show ended. A year later the fan forum I was on shut down. And no one really cared about coming together to discuss anymore. I loved the PPG when I was younger too. It's shows like that and MLP that always amaze me in how much they seem stupid at first glance, but then they really captivate you on many levels.

Probably not. This fandom seems like such an anomaly I doubt the lightning will strike twice. Hopefully the movie gives it a bit of a boost in popularity but if not, at least we have the memories. Plus I doubt anyone here will be going any time soon

Admitting I dropped out of participation in the fandom and dropping the show completely to move to the next bandwagon are two completely different things. I continued to admire the show, fan artists, and musicians of the fandom from a safe distance away from the shit posters and dramu.
