The message of the episode wasn't "Just put in effort" it was "If you try you might fail, but you'll never succeed if you don't". Zephyr was already a naturally skilled hairdresser so he didn't need to put in effort; he was just so lazy and used to having ponies do things for him that he was terrified of doing anything on his own if it meant there was a risk of failure.
