I started with MyPaint. It was a very good program until the recent updates that ruined the user interface. Since then, I've been using Medibang. It's a smooth program that usually has the tool for anything you want to do. If you want to just draw regularly without any fancy tools, it is perfectly designed for that as well.

Been making sprites for a Dwarf Fortress pony mod. >>29227971 Might be useful for a Nethack or Stone Soup mod, too, if 24x24 is supported. And, no, that's not Applejack, I made all the earth pony classes the same skin color so that they could be easily identified against each other race's skin color. I just make PMVs, month ago I made PMV which was 54 minutes long with an intend to tell a story through music and visuals. Also released new video week ago to get new stuff out for new year. Working on another PMV right now. It's taking a long time but I want it to be really good.

I base a lot of PMVs upon my real life feelings. For whatever's that's worth. It makes me feel better to get it out of my system.

I am happy with what I do but I wish I had a time to learn how to animate or make music to express myself in more ways. Life's busy currently and these PMVs themselves take a lot of time to make I just hope that sorta shows. Always loved video editing. I've been working on this project a while. Finding a 3d animator became too difficult and time consuming. It was always either they didn't have time with school/work or their commission slots were full from brony cucks who just wanted their OC in Garry's mod.

Still, though, my main problem with art right now is that I really don't feel like doing studies and all that shit, as they're quite dull and tedious. And that's quite a big problem, as studying art is, if you're not already aware, a pretty fuckin' important thing to git gud.

I was thinking about doing one at TrotCon about making a game for a fandom. Covering things like how to find people to work with and scope of projects. Probably mostly scope because I feel like a lot of people have no idea what that is. For example I may be wrong about this, correct me if I am fallout Equestria. They are trying to replicate a multi million dollar budget game with a few members of a horse fandom. They have been working for a few years and don't look like anywhere near completion.

Sad but true.

I'm trying my best to keep scope in my game. That is why the graphics arnt photo realistic and I'm using a paper Mario styled character model.
The game is about surviving waves of spoopy forest creatures, while also cutting down trees and building a base. Shoot enemy, cut down trees, build base, repeat. Simple well planned game machaics to make it fun and releasable within the next year. No "power ups" or "skill trees" just a simple well balanced game.

The thing is even if you know it, the urge is hard to resist to start a large scale project, just because it's fun.

Last year I started doing a 3D thing in Unity, I had an animated pony model running around, and an open-ish world system without loading screens.

But then I realized I'd have to model one entire fucking universe in 3D, and just laying out the streets of ponyville was giving me a headache, so that project is still sitting in a folder on my hard drive.

We are. It's been transcribed for months. There is one big problem with it right now. The harmony is fine. The lyrics are great. But the chorus melody is really monotone and repetitive that it has made a lot of people I've previewed it to say "wow this doesn't sound like the original at all and is super boring".

So I am working to construct other mechanisms to enhance it enough that it makes it sound better, but also stays true to Greg's creativity.

I'm thinking about it. Like I said before, I'm trying out new styles to make something unique.

Another reason I really wanted to use 3d models with real time lighting is because I'm using GameMaker studio and that engine gets a lot of shit for its 3d functionality. Is it as good as unity? Fuck no, but I kinda wanted to show that it can come out nice if you know what your doing.

Anyone making games in need of a non-committal but overall pretty good programmer?

Every so often I get the urge to build something. I even tend get shit done if the work is challenging or interesting.

The goal is to be sort of like Minecraft/Terraria, with a mix of exploration and base-building. The idea is that you will start with access to only basic wood and stone for building your house or village, and to get the materials for more interesting equipment/furniture/etc., you'll need to explore and expand the "civilized" zone further out into the forest. I can go into more detail on this if you're interested.

Sure, that's pretty interesting, but I'm wondering what it'll look like in terms of gameplay.

In Minecraft for example there's the constant threats of annoying monsters and surviving the night, and that's an incentive to get better equipment and build a better base, then exploring the different biomes, the nether, playing with redstone and all that.

I tried launching the game and running around, and so far it looks like there's some pretty cool crafting and interaction features, but I also went wandering into the woods and the world feels a little lifeless.
So I'm wondering what sort of features you're working on at the moment.

It's a sandbox game so it's a bit open-ended, but the two major goals will be (1) explore as far as possible, and (2) gather wealth you can show off (build a fancy house / wear fancy clothes).

To achieve either goal, you need crafting materials of some kind. The main obstacle will be navigating the forest. It doesn't have monsters (I'm trying to avoid adding combat if I can), but the trees will shift behind you as you move, possibly cutting off your route home. Only if you navigate out of the forest successfully do you get to keep any loot you find there. Going longer distances into the forest will increase the risk, but it will also increase the quality of the loot you find.

Normal gameplay will look like this:
You start out at the center of the map, which is difficulty level 0/5, meaning the forest hardly ever messes with you, but also only basic resources are available. You set up a basic house with just wood and stone, then head into the forest looking for metal ore. Eventually you reach a level-1 area, where you find copper ore. You could continue to a level-2 region, where you might find iron, but that increases your chance of getting lost or trapped, so you take the copper ore and head back. Now you can upgrade your house a bit, and build some new equipment, such as a better compass, to help you navigate more safely into the level-2 areas. With enough copper, you could also set up a safe staging area in level-1 territory, and use that to launch your adventures into level-2 areas.

Higher-level areas give you the resources to continue exploring (goal #1), and once you've made enough progress, you can start farming them for higher-end materials for your fancy house/clothes (goal #2).

So if I can play doubles advocate here for a moment, if there's no fighting what stops me from just running straight into a level 5 area and getting myself lost in here until I've pillaged enough stuff to find my way out, or just build my base right on the inside where all the expensive stuff is.

If there's no real danger, why wouldn't I go live where all the loot is? Or even just play nomadic and take what's on the path until I find my way out, it's not like I'm risking anything since I can craft tools on the way.

Some infrastructural stuff right now. I'm adding some update tracking to the core game-state structure, so that the logic for propagating updates to clients can be separated more cleanly from the main server code.
In terms of gameplay features, the next thing on my list is an improved version of the ward system, which lets players protect their buildings from other players, and in the future will also make the surrounding forest safer to navigate.

Well, I'm glad that didn't scare you off. The build system is kind of hairy, and there's what, 20 or so subdirectories under src/ ?

Nope, just a text editor (vim). Most of the code is in Rust anyway, which doesn't have any good IDEs yet as far as I know.

Hmm, good point, particularly about the purely-nomadic play style. I was planning to restrict crafting stations so they can't be moved once they're placed, so that crafting anything while you're in the forest requires sacrificing an anvil/workbench. But if you're willing to stay in the forest forever, I suppose you could find enough resources to rebuild the crafting station every time you use it.

There's a few things I could change to prevent this, but I'll have to think about how feasible the strategy actually is. If it's possible in theory but difficult enough that most players won't bother, I might leave it in as a sort of challenge option.

Thanks for letting me know. It looks like it sets the hotkey when you press A, then goes back into "select hotkey" mode when you release A. So as a workaround, if you press A and hold it, then exit the menu with Space or Esc, and only then release A, it seems to set the hotkey properly.

As a last resort, you can fix most issues by resetting things in the config editor. Press F2, D, C in-game, or from the server list click More -> Settings -> Open Editor. Find the setting that's causing problems (in this case "keybindings") and click Reset.
