I am currently reading it, was actually updated a week ago ( FOE the Chrysalis)

My thoughts on it? Its a good story but I feel the author doesn't really know how to expand that changeling setting or in any case, doesn't know what he wants to do with it. The story is all over the place.

Without spoiling anything, there are so many plotlines and the main character suffers a really bizarre personality transformation that turns her into a super expert in psychology who can analyze everything or anyone as well as a very good combat that in my opinion comes a little abrupt and just feels like the author suddenly thought "Now she is a spy"

About the transformations, I am not sure if I like them. There was this one fight chapter that was well done, it has the MC transforming into the enemy to blend in and save her friends but that's about it. She also transforms into a pegasus to spy on someone and on a big stallion to push a car but those moments were very brief and can be counted on one hand. So yeah, not so many transformations and sometimes you even forget that she is supposed to be one and become a generic character

It's not a bad story by all means, if only a little "Naive-Protagonist-who-lost-everything-and-ventures-for-the-first-time-in-the-wasteland-making-a-new-best-friend-and-ends-up-being-a-super-soldier-kind-of-generic" but I just wish there was more actual changeling stuff or at least have the author actually think what he wants to do with his story and plot

There was another story with a changeling as a side character, one with the protagonist being frozen and waking up 200 years after the war (before Fo4 was a thing so was original at the time) but that changeling actually transformed into many things including a draconequus and a lot of sex innuendos. Now that I think about it, I prefer the changeling who doesn't transform versus one who fills just a fetish for the author

So what would lead to avwasteland militia that is seperate from slaver or raider? It seems like Talons are speed dial answers and anyone less would just get steam rolled ala Arbu.

And just what was with Arbu? They fought off the consumed at the start, yet couldn't kill Pip, and she doesn't even have a shield.

It would also be a point that a medic or scientist might be more of a prize. Shooting a gun is common in the wasteland, knowing how to grow crops, do surgery, or repair and build are valuable skills.
I could see them being in a sort of gilded cage scenario with the king's inventor or some such. Too valuable to be allowed out in the wastes, even if they want to be. Could be interesting if it was a whole team dropped off at once, some of them want to explore the world, others would rather stay in the bird cage and out of danger after what they just went through.
Internal divides and distaste leading to one escaping and seeing what the world is like, just in time for the adventure to go find him.

Hey, you still there?” He snapped a talon near her ear to get her attention to no avail. Reaching to the phial he popped the top off and poured it down her throat. “You’re cleaning this mess up when you wake up. I’m not doing it. I didn’t shoot the stable dweller.”

That Fluttershy moment was out of fucking nowhere. Otherwise a great chapter, the action picked up compared to some previous ones.

I really don't get the Fluttershy part, it seems less like she was on some mental trip from the Simple Heart mind fuck spell, and more like she actually got teleported to moder/post Sunshine and Rainbows Fluttershy to be healed. Its interesting as Simple Heart was supposed to be a time weapon, yet is just a mental mindscape along the lines of dream Luna, and Thistle was a green alicorn so it couldn't be her. And if Baptista had teleportation capabilities, then she would have been able to use them earlier to great effect, as opposed to it being a weird moment where she had no power. Thistle versus Haze looks to be interesting and I kind of want her to have survived because of this. I would like to see a story arc about pacifism close with a pacifist route and not, well maybe peace is over rated.
In particular, I think the appeal to Mother could be an interesting route, as after all, the alicorns seem to all have the same starting point with that. Haze could also be quite interesting here, a complete personality formed not from an existing soul, but an amalgamate made from whomever managed to shove something somewhere. Blackmane's death is also quite deliscious. No buildup to it, just a prompt beat down and crushing.
Normally a QTE is a horrible thing, but here it has the certain feeling of final success, that Hired is just that good that mashing a series of buttons is how it should end, not some puzzle boss of trying to get her to EMP herself or some shootout with the AM rifle and flamer.

I don't like that Hired is becoming a blood knight though, she seemed more of wanting to just get paid and move on, then build a better world for serenity. Perhaps this is just more of her character though, the realization that has been slowly growing where she isn't fighting for caps creed or family, but because its fun.

The Wasteland has claimed you is an all too appropriate thing I feel.

Hired wanted amnesia/forgetting/ a new life. Silver Storm was weak, broken, her brother stolen and murdered, her child murdered by suicide rape, her lover shot in the head and dead. Wallkirk may have meant the best and only been wrong everytime, but he is also one of the few forces capable of delivering on what he wants. That Hired wants to kill him for being wrong is the issue, and I think a sign of that she no more than the Watchers, knows that the world will only go as she wants if she has power. The power to save her lover, to save her foal, to make sure the suffering ends. She has seen what it is like to be powerless, to be on the other side of the stream.
Murky is a good counter, he comes into greatness not for power or by power, but by small wit and perseverance. He isn't wanting anything more than personal freedom for him and his friends. He doesn't lead a coalition, just a small band that joined together of their own. From there he gets freedom for them before himself. All for the sake of freedom, no more no less.

Dance of the Orthus has them a plenty and done organically. They fit for the aesthetic and are limited use, so you're not really running into them all over the place, but their prescence isn't also detracting.
I think that is a good point to aim torward, unlike Mr. Peace from MN7. There the robot was presented as a wonder do anything weapon and essentially felt like Fuzzy wrote himself into a corner and needed to do something different to get out of it.

Blackjack is also a good robot I feel. Her change over time as the thought process and reality she perceives become more alien to the reader and her companions is a good sight, and much better than these steel humans that most fics use.

So was it really necessary to add in the last bit of Shackles managing to separate out Murky? As things go, the Steel Rangers would still be closing in on Filly and crushing it down, so Shackles death was inevitable.
Making it so the whole thing was to give him a year of wandering was a bit of a copout I felt since we don't get to see it. It would have gone better if Murk was left searching for his friends, no idea where they are, in as much as he could stay at Tenpony and wait for them.

It's not only that there isn't new content, it's that many have developed very specific interests and taste where any exceptions needs to be at a very high standard. I like seeing people try to learn to write and the occasional art is amusing to glance at, but nothing lately catches my interest any longer. Not to mention there's already a huge backlog of content nobody will ever get through in their lifetime.

When people want new content here, they're essentially asking writers to compete with the old giants. Unless they truly believe and fight to write a story that's up there with them, they can expect nothing more than a comment or two with the accompanied practice and experience you get for writing something. People are simply too busy with their FoE time consuming the fics we already got to create or consume any new material.

If you're not doing that on the other hand, you're probably lurking these threads thinking you don't have the time for anything else. You're wrong.

And this is why I am doing monthly contests. Content is good.

I think the main reason for separating Murky was to allow him to escape on his own, to mirror the escape attempt near the start of the story.
He succeeded not because he had the help of powerful friends, but because he had grown strong and determined enough to escape by himself.
Personally I preferred this over the usual "Friendship is Magic" moral.

Shackles absolutely needed to be killed on-screen. If he'd died off-screen no reader would have believed it. And considering his obsession with Murky, the escape wouldn't have been complete without his death.

And as much as I'd love to read about Murky's shenanigans in the wasteland, I think it would drag the story on too long because the main goal of escaping Filly has already been reached.

I think that involving Shackles robbed it at the end and turned it into a bit of a standard gun down the bad guys to win fic.
Murky was about freedom, escape, and survival. Killing Shackles feels less like that, it should have been Murky going free and ignoring Shackles.
Realizing there at the end, Shackles being consumed by his own CM was more of a punishment and just leaving him all battered and broken.
Then if the slaves just killed him and walked away I would have called a Disney on it and considered Murky did what was needed at the end, escape.


Essentially, having to kill SHackles made the ending generic instead of just moving on past it, conflict isn't needed to solve all the problems.


I feel it should have been shortcutted at the end, have Homage get Pip to look for the village, then send Murky direct on his way. All the more so as at the end he can fly now so its easier.

Someone link the youtube channel with the foe podcasts on them so I can listen to them while I play strategy games where I stare at maps for hours on end please.

It seems Shackles is not just used as a villain but also a symbol for slavery. By killing him, Murky doesn't just defeat Shackles, he also defeats slavery (symbolically, by "breaking" the eternal chain that is Shackles' cutie mark).

I suppose the advantage of having Murky wander the wasteland for a while is that it shows he's strong enough to survive on his own, like his idol Pip.

Too me I saw it as Shackles and Murky were avatars, their CMs being more about primal forces than something prosaic and talent. Murky triumphs by existing free, Shackles by enslaving all. In an essence I see the argument and idea of closure, even if we never find out if Shackles really is his father, but it feels wrong in a literary sense. Like playing a stealth thief game only for the last level to toss you a grenade launcher and tell you to fight the time traveling jetpack nazi communist raptors from the moon. You most certainly didn't see it coming and it kind of robs you of the expected end.
Shackles really should have been the force Murky can't touch, I expected him to go down to Brim reliving a memory or try to snag the orb and lose his mind as Unity reveals she needs a mind to stabilize it, and his will do. The SATS shot just sort of robs that, even more given the vapor smoke slaves going at him and their existence at all. I was really expecting them to be after effects, Murky's memories bleeding in from the past.
That they savaged Shackles and he just kills a couple and keeps coming was over the top.

Wasteland Robin Hood Murky feels like an excellent way for Fuzzy to keep writing, might even be the plan with it. I am rather mixed on epilogues like this. I know they allow radical departure and are essentially, tieing up loose ends, but sometimes they just feel like "Fuck, I finished the story and forgot to!" as opposed to, wait what happened to the first batch who ran from the walls?

Alright, so too start our illustrious unikitty in stocking is not actually a raider. Her name is Whisper, and she is yet another stable born.

Now I'm going to give a pass on some of the sins as this fic is from 2012, so many of the complaints had not yet had time to stew and make for bad fics, but I will still knock it for the failures.

So anyways, a stable, woohoo, a commission of an OC doing something with a stick of butter if something goes wrong and the protag has too leave is the wager, is the starting point. A simple stable, we learn that its basically a forced foster stable, testing that if you only have adopted parents, maybe you will do better. Gee Scootaloo, most people get a pet when they feel like having company, not consign thousands to suffer like you for centuries. Fucking edgelord, I bet you can't even wear clothes without turning them into ribbon.

So the story starts with Whisper being a bad pony. She apparently also can turn invisible or in some fashion throw and hide her voice enough to make people think things are haunted. She is also extremely mischievous and gets put in pony stable jail for her actions. Also got the air vents mined with flashbangs and foam grenades, which is quite the accomplishment.

So sin 2, taking something established as being solely unique in canon, and running off with it as the protagonist power.

Anyways, due to her antics, the stable doesn't like her. In fact she also just pranked the overmare, so now they hate her.

Sin 3, nobody loves her.
Seriously, why can't people join me and have ponies involved in loving relations and actually start an adventure happy. I'm not asking for them to be singing and the trees dancing, just something that does not make therapists groan from the workload.

So yeah, stop with the random gears meshing, they're augers, corkscrews, and will shred through anything your body puts out, and incidentally, bodies. Fluid waste management is a very visible field and easily researched, learn how shit is dealt with to write about shit.

So anyways, a possible attempt was made on Whispers life as the horribly designed system maintains backpressure and she nearly gets crushed or drowned in shit. See its not China people, Murky was right, safety!

She doesn't get much help, her Foster brother and separate last friend are both freaking out, but she brushes it off. Seems she expects this sort of stuff, so its not too much. Her big mistake though is when she finds out during lunch that she is very shy. She reflexively trys to go invisible and receives a security tackle and hoofcuffs from her foster brother security guard for attempting to use magic. Poor pony and screwed up family.

She eventually gets to her room and sticks around for a while, eventually sheltering her supervisor from the he has a date he doesn't want. Thing is, we find out she also swiped some important files from the Overmare's terminal. Stable is going broke.

Sin 4, stable about to be broken down.

Sin 5, brother sister feud for poor reasons.

So work draws around and the water talisman is being checked. Now I like the show here, its not a small thing that fits in the hoof, this is a pretty hefty setup and feels like something meant to provide all the water needed. Obviously it breaks at just this moment and the real plot begins.
Whisper must now brave the wasteland and find the missing water talisman.

Lots of sins here since its Fallouts plot starting.

Pro from this, its not Whispers fault for bad things, and it is reasonably argued that her skills make her the best. This is good and reduces some of the issues by showing they're not just throwing the troublemaker out to die.
Further Whisper doesn't want to go and thinks its still certain death outside the stable door. This makes for a bit nicer view in that I am not expecting instant proficiency and am hopeful that the involved talents make more sense in the next chapter.


Overall, this serves as a good example of mostly what not to do if you want a unique fic, and what to do if you wan the equivalent of a vegemite and annanas sandwich fic. Effective, tried and true starts, but also boring and overdone. I would ask the author to defend himself, but a 5 year old fic is probably not going to have an author still in the fandom.

Pipbucks are given because you want some function, like SATs for the epic shot, or to have them remember very late, oh year red dots.
A Pipbuck is just a lazy crutch for most people and not very well used. A good point being the abuse of the sorting spell to package, sort and reorder items, or use SATS to think of an answer to a question. Like, a comedy peice where someone freaks out about being asked if they love someone, triggers SATS, gets their thoughts together then answers.

I prefer to ignore them in most writing and not have them. Those that do tend to be a very defenite threat as they all have tricked out Pipbucks that can mess with the rules of the story.

Yes, actually. The setting actually lends itself really well to a character-driven narrative. I really liked this chapter. Glad to see Alloy taking some agency for herself and advancing the plot on her own terms, instead of just taking whatever gets thrown her way. I really like the way Ham does the spooky locations, and it was cool to see how dangerous the night is in the Bayou. Really liked the ending stuff with the Zebras, and now she is in quite the desperate pickle with Sugarland.
See Alloy, that's what you get for trying to help.

Also, Kyra has been a continued breath of fresh air to the cast, it really needed someone like her to balance out the angst. Interested to see what's going on with her storyline.

Who would win in a stealth takedown competition?
Murky or Alloy?

Murky is adept at sneaking, but his signature move requires the opponent to have grenades.

Alloy on the other hand has demonstrated profficiency with ranged stealth takedowns using her pistol, and carries a sword that she knows how to use.

In mobility, Murky has it much better, able to use his grapple and glide to quickly get the highground, while Alloy can only walk.

Kurtz searched around the arena for something to wrap to Steel in. He managed to find some old ragged table cloth that seemed like it would do. Draping it over Steel he found a problem, the earth pony definitely weighed like a planet. After nearly pulling his back trying to lift her up, he opted to wrap as much of her in the cloth as possible and haul her around the complex.
“You know, this seemed like a job I was long past. Then again, it typically involved the shot being in the head and a tarp. Ah, you and me, I can just tell we’re getting along like star metal and moon stone. Best of friends great friends. Heavy friends,” he grunted out as he tried to haul her up the steps in pursuit of wherever Echo had run off to. Her armor protected her from the abuse, but it was safe to say she left her mark on the place when a ledge came loose. “You know what, better plan. MOM!”
Steel awoke to his crow and ended up toppling both of them forward down the stairs into a pile of shaking limbs. Steel saw a shadow come toward them and heard the sounds of hissing steam and the clank of treads before being picked up by the neck of her stable barding.
“Oh Kurtz, what have I told you about playing on the stairs. You’re lucky your little playmate wasn’t hurt you know. Tell her your sorry,”
“By my down and my fur, I’m sorry Steel.”
“And you little power pony.” Steel was rotated around and came face to glowing grate with a machine. “What an adorable cape, but you can’t fly like the pegasi. Let me kiss the boo boo better.” The machine released a mechanical tentacle that snaked toward the bullet wound in Steel’s leg. It puffed a purple cloud before pushing through the skin and snaking around under the meat. Steel was too surprised by the turn of events to panic much, even as she saw her flesh roiling from what the war machine did. Finished, the outgrowths pulled back, a trail of healing potion sealing and repairing the mare as the bullet came out.

Saw Equestria go from a land of quiet ponies and friendship to a dictatorship that wanted to take whatever it desired for itself with no care. And your ancestors I should point, ran and hid in a hole in the ground, so don’t go on about you should right the wrongs and send the world back to where it was before. Many other have tried, and most of them died. A few not horribly. So yes, past happened, move on, here us now, and future, finding Echo Starr.”

The walk around the place was full of starts and stops as Carbon tried to have words with Kurtz and later as she grew more infuriated about being unable to be angry. Eventually they found Echo in a conference room, sitting at the head of the table.
“Took you two long enough to find me, now I’ve been thinking-“ Carbon growled at the pony who shot her, pivoted and bucked the table straight at him. Echo yanked himself up and onto the table with his magic, letting it skid under him as it crashed into the wall. But you, head strong and-“ a chair was yanked into the way of the return flutter kicks and used as a shield as he continued “skilled, you had something different. A goal I can get behind, now I’ve been looking through my work, and I think I can accept this offer of yours.” He dropped the chair and flicked it under her as she overbalanced, skidding her toward the table. He walked over and took a seat before pulling a sheet of paper from the pile toward her, and a gauntlet mounted pen. “So, do we have an agreement, to help kill your father?”
