Who else feel nostalgic about MLP:FIM and this brony thing too? It's all so different now, and I've been visiting /mlp/ for more than 4 years now, so I thought that we could appreciate what we have done since MLP:FIM first aired.

"neo/mlp/" is a myth. I've been a ponyfag from the start and I get called "neo /mlp/" all the time, that phrase is just something fandom fans use to justify the fact that they won't leave us real fans alone when they aren't even part of the fandom anymore

Current /mlp/ is far too disconnected with itself to have any true sense of unity in the userbase.

This is partly due to oldfags leaving and in other parts due to newfags coming in.
Many oldfags have also been pretty lax with enforcing our "culture" (Not that moderation has made this task any easier) and thus newcomers hardly endure any kind of lurking phase.
Couple this with the plethora of generals and we can have new people who came in from fetish general #276 and have had no proper interaction with the board itself.
Also without being as demonized against the other boards and society in general there's not a clear "enemy" for us to rally together against.
Another of the few things keeping us together as "one" was episodes, but the damn brit scheduling and leaks tore that one away too.

mlp & /mlp/ was giant coupling of coincidences that made for a very tight and niche community, unfortunately though as quickly as that community formed so too did it vanish.
What we need is some great thing to bring everyone on this board together, but that's just not happening.
Too many newfags, too little oldfags, too many generals, too little regular threads, etc.
We've taken many hits. It's nice we still stand, but we can't go back to how we were before.
We've survived 6-7 years as a show and around 4-5 as a board, things were bound to grow stale.
Well seasoned people are less likely to stay and new people aren't bothered; these happenings are simply unavoidable.

The funny thing too is that generals are like a self destructive band-aid.
You have a lack of unity and community, so you fuck off to a general to rekindle it. However, the general by itself begets a lack of unity.
Personally I come here now because of the Satyr general (which also has problems), and to see if there are any worthwhile threads to either: shitpost, show/genreal discussion in, or green up somebody's prompt.
Sadly, /mlp/ has troubles being interesting in any of those regards at the moment.
>>
>>29250633
I don't agree with all you say, but I agree with some.

For one thing, oldfags leaving is fine....there were far too many bandwagon faggots around anyway, all we need is the true fanbase. That being said, generals running rampant is the BIGGEST problem on this board, straight up, the number one reason this board seems so slow is not because there aren't people here, but because people are compartmentalized into individual generals that don't need to exist and it creates a board culture of people just staying in one thread and endlessly bumping it regardless of it's worth

The only thing that can make this board better is mods treating generals the same way they do on any other board, rather than letting this place just become a wasteland of small useless cliques

>>
>>29250633
This general degradation of userbase, community, and quality of threads can also be applied to 4chan as a whole, really.
I don't know, maybe I'm the problem.
/mlp/ was a beautiful place I was proud to call my home, but its just so hard to feel that same since of kinship I originally had back in 2012-13.

We've also lost great board-unifying people as well, with Capper and LSA being the first two that come to mind.
Even in the last few live threads and /mlp/-tan quest you could feel how different things had become, and those were the last threads I felt could bring together everyone as a whole.
I had hopes for the VN as well but unfortunately we all know how that turned out.
I also realize this is kind of blog posty but fuck you it feels nice to type shit like this out and it fits for nostalgia so there.
Maybe everything eating shit thought means we can finally move on, so it might actually be for the better.
Maybe that's just what I tell myself.

Of course, I haven't stopped coming here yet; perhaps though that's just my loyalty/stubbornness taking effect.

>>29250663
I reached limit and didn't take the time to properly articulate my thoughts so I don't expect all of them to be as valid as others.
You say you're fine with weeding out people down to the true fanbase, to that I ask if you're happy with the results we've achieved.
I would also argue that axing generals would kill /mlp/ as there's not a great enough pull factor with standard threads to keep people here.
I mean, when you filter away all the generals most of time there's simply not enough good threads that are really being killed by them.
Maybe though without generals people would try to create better threads, but in the end it would just be trying to rekindle what was lost.
I think the best thing for the board is a lack of moderation, although I'm not too sure how the current userbase would handle self-moderation.
Generals have no clear answer I'm afraid, not at this point.

>You say you're fine with weeding out people down to the true fanbase, to that I ask if you're happy with the results we've achieved.
Eh I mean, I still enjoy posting here...it's just slower than before, my biggest pet peeve in this fandom is people who don't watch the show or hate the show, so yeah I have to say I'm glad mlp being a meme is done and a lot of those people have fucked off

>I would also argue that axing generals would kill /mlp/ as there's not a great enough pull factor with standard threads to keep people here.
I mean, when you filter away all the generals most of time there's simply not enough good threads that are really being killed by them.

Nah, first of all....yes, without generals being so rampant on this board people would be FORCED to actually post in more than one thread, that's just basic math, generals provide niche groups with basically a little chatroom they can stay in while contributing nothing to the rest of the board.....people stay in one thread, never post in others, and never make creative new threads because they are content in their circle jerk that they just continually refresh as if the rest of the board didn't exist at all....

Now, trying to rekindle what was lost? What was lost exactly friend, the show still exists...I still watch old episodes on a regular basis, I know other people do as well, sometimes I discover new things about old episodes...sometimes I just want to talk about them for nostalgia, other times the show just inspires me in some way and makes me want to talk about it in any number of ways....I mean look at /co/ , they actually moderate fairly well...generals are only allowed when they NEED to exist and hell people have threads daily about Ed Edd and Eddy...a vapid cartoon that has been cancelled for how many years now? There is no excuse really
>>
>>29250717
Just to finish this rant off...I'm not saying generals need to 100 percent abolished or something either, I know MLP is a board about one mere cartoon show and that surely it differs from /co/ based on that, just that this board has far too many of them that have no business existing and the board suffers because of it
>>
>>29250717
And yet we still have have plenty of people who don't watch the show because they're a fan of the board.
That, and many people also find it hard to continue to watch the show after its drops in quality.

>people would be FORCED to actually post in more than one thread, that's just basic math,
If they stay that is.

For the show we've lost plenty of old writers and general quality.
Memefaces are also more rampant.
Show discussion is also something that can only be done so much, even when finder something new in an older episode.
/co/ and other general topic boards fair better without being solely focused on one individual work, just a general medium.
/mlp/ would have to have long dead times before the same topic can be discussed again, and without that activity why have a board?
The lack of thoughtful discussion isn't really the board's problem, shit just happens.

>>29250720
I agree on the principle definitely, but I just can't foresee threads becoming "thought provoking" and talked in just because some niche generals are gone.
I expect mainly bitching and then fucking off really.
>>
>>29250740
Well I respectfully disagree with literally everything you just said

I've been hearing people say the show is dead since S2, it's now going on S7 and we have a movie coming out, so, we're still alive, us fans who are true fans, not saying the show hasn't had dips in quality here and there, it certainly has, but that goes for any show that actually lasts for more than a couple seasons....there will be ups and downs period
>>
>>29250762
Here's the part where I call you a Hasdrone.

Seriously though regardless of it is drop in quality or not the show has changed a lot since season 1 & 2, even 3, and some people just cant be bothered to keep up with the show now, hell, I find it hard too.

I get not liking the people who abandoned ship, but not everyone of those people were 2011-12 bandwagoners. Some people just don't like the direction the show has taken, and I find it kind of hard to blame.
The people who stay with the show are either too stubborn to leave, eat up whatever gets shit on their plate, or just have literally nothing else they would rather do. The last group also falls victim to shitposting on /mlp/ instead of watching the episode, or staying in their general. I do appreciate show discussion though and that of course can only be had with people who watch the show still, but again only so much can be discussed and for only so long.
Hiatus season too pretty much relies on fan of the fandom to keep discussion flowing, or of course stay in your cozy general. Without anything happening what else is there really to discuss?
>>
>>29250792
Different Anon here.

Maybe the issue is that you are searching for a solution to a problem that can't be solved? The show, and this board, both have to die at some point, if not at the same time. Coming up with new answers to just prolong the lifespan of the board seems like just trying to keep it running for nostalgia's sake.

I admit, I loved this show and board in its hayday, and contributed major content to help the ride keep going strong. But these things do peter out. A key sign on boards is the auto-segregation into generals, as is happening here.

What I'm getting is:
Maybe its all just dying and there is nothing we can do to stop it.
>>
>>29250813
*What I'm getting at is:
>>
I didn't realize how bad this place was until recently. I don't follow any generals anymore. I left guard mare after it went from comfy to shitposty and ever since I've had nothing to do but roam the board looking for random threads to post in. I drop by other generals in the hopes of finding good pictures once in a while, but that's it.

It feels empty when the four or five threads you post in are at the top of the catalogue all the time. It's almost like I'm on /pone/. It's a pretty dreadful feeling really.

Since its inception, I used to post on this board every single day, and even though these days I barely visit at all, some of the stuff that's happened on this board will probably stay with me for the rest of my life. It's an abstract kind of feel to know that I'll probably never be able to discuss and reminisce those things ever again, because heck, it doesn't even really make sense to bring them up on this board anymore - if not in a thread like this - since they happened 3 or 4 years ago.

For what it's worth though, we had one hell of a ride.

Actually looking through these made me realize how many genuinely interesting random, stand-alone threads that would pop up on the board. We don't really have those anymore, not anywhere near to the same extent at least. We've got generals instead. But the generals aren't the problem, they're merely a symptom of the problem.

Every flame will wink out at some time. There's nothing to say there won't be a new generation of ponyshit and such... But it won't be the same I'm sure.

I've been here since the beginning and have lots of dumb pony shit, and I cherish it because it's a part of me. Same with my Rarity cutie mark tattoo. It's hidden but it reminds me every morning to give and love because compassion is important to me.

The show has gone to shit and so has this board but I'll be in queue for this wild ride until I'm dead. We've done a lot for the world, and 'ruined" much, much more of it.

Love it. Love you guys.

>>
My two part plan for improving board quality:
1. Convince all the general and reoccurring threads to wait at least a week or longer before being remade. This gives them a refresh period since they aren't up 24/7 plus frees up space on the board.
2. Somehow convince mods to ease back on their restrictions.

Neither of those things will ever happen, but I find it fun to speculate.
