This makes my dick diamonds, even more so than "tyrant sun". Twilight needs to confront an ideology that she finds wrong, without being necessarily evil. How much worse would be it from someone she respects and looks up to? There's even a valuable lesson for kids there, if they had the balls to write it.

Can they write that well, though? I mean, Starlight Glimmer was the best shot at that - what with there being mark-less societies in the setting already. The lesson could have been "it's cool to want to live your own way, but not to mindfuck others to obey your ideas". Unfortunately they did a complete swerve away from that and went with 'muh childhood friend' instead.

Don't get me wrong. I love chessmaster Celestia. But my faith in their ability to write a morally ambiguous story is at near-zero here.

I don't think it's a lack of ability, after all Starlight Glimmer's introduction episode was kinda hardcore for a kid's show. I think it's an ideological problem with the writers, who are still in the mindset that they are writing light-hearted fluff episodes for little girls first and foremost.

We can go even deeper. Have them the fight the source of their own power. Perhaps have them find out they it controls their fate more than they thought. It tries to force Discord to be evil again just for the sake of balance. The only way to be truly free is to destroy it.
