Ponies do indeed eat meat. For the most part, it's pegai, as their cities float over sea just as easily as land, it's only natural they would incorporate seafood in to their diets. Pegai also enjoy the most militant culture of the 3 tribes, and eating meat is seen as an expression of one's prowess.

Unicorns, also occasionally eat meat. Omnivorousness is a fashion for them, and as such it waxes and wanes. When it's popular, it is generally seen as a way of demonstrating one's power and connections, when it's not popular, it's seen a vulgar practice.

Earth ponies are the least likely to eat meat, as their powerful farming magics mean they never incorporated meat out of necessity like pegai, and their traditional position at the bottom of the pony hierarchy meant they never had the type of customs and taboos that would benefit from displaying of one's influence in such a manner, like unicorns. That said, since Great Celestia united the tribes under her own banner, they will occasionally indulge if given proper encouragement.

Pone are prey animals, and many have undoubtedly gotten their asses eaten. With some pone having lost family to meat eaters, coupled with being natural prey animals, I think it's not a big stretch that they'd look down on other pone eating meat.
