"What're we all going to do after the war? There are almost no Discrod's beasts left and well, I'm sure that there would be almost no criminals after a couple of years of peace. So where do you think will guardsponies go?"
"Well, after we will win the war we'll still have plenty ofthings to do. Capturing ocasional Celestia's followers from time to time, guarding crossroads, writing tickets for flying too fast. And we can't disregard the possibility that yaks or griffins might try to attack us while we are weakened by war.
So for a couple of years Night Guard will have their hooves full. And after that, well..." - you scratched your chin thoughtfully - "Then we can settle in some nice and quiet place as a family. Gust is ascended, so she will probably stay in the guard no matter what and we'll always have some bits. Heck, I might even become a housewife!"
"Are you completely sure that your relations are so serious?" - filly squinted her eyes - "Not that I mind, but... it's a really important decision, you know?"

"Yeah." - she beamed a proud smile at you - "So when I convinced them that I was just a scared little filly they were kinda embarassed and just left me there, because they didn't know what to do with me."
"Well, you were damn lucky then. So, is there anything you want to do while I still have a day off?"
"Just walk around the city? And an ice cream would be nice, I think? I thought you had some ideas."

"I-it was a bad joke!" - she crossed here forelegs and turned away from you.

"I'm sorry for my stupid jokes." - you rolled your eyes - "Better?"
"Quite." - she solemnly nodded and got off the bench - "Chocolate one."

You quickly found an ice cream vendor and bought for Last Word the treat of her choise, while getting yourself a spearmint one, thus making yourself four bits poorer.
After finishing your ice cream, you asked local citizens about places of cultural value and discovered that a museum dedicated to pre-Discordian Equestria had been recently opened, so you and Word headed there.
It turned out that entrance was free, because 'ponies need to know about their cultural heritage' or something like that. Museum was surprisingly big, and had sections dedicated not only to various pony states, but also to other species.

You decided to visit the section dedicated to Diamond Dogs and learn about their life and culture.

Most of the Diamond Dogs' enclaves were located in the southern mountain range, though some of them were settled in the mountains in the east and north of Equestria. Presumably most of the settlements that had not gone extinct due to beasts dwelling in the caverns, inbreeding or any other reasons still remain isolated from the outer world. During the Discord's reign Diamond Dogs had changed their place of living many times when gems around had been mined, though they can't be called nomadic. There is evidence to the theory that Doamond Dogs sent their youths to find a better place for themselves thus fighting the overpopulation and satying the gem lust of the younger Dogs.

Diamond Dogs are skilled in arts of masonry, blacksmithing and jewelry, though the latter is and was the the most common craft in their society which is prooved by abundance of different gems, pieces of jewelry and items incrusted with gems in excavated settlements. Some scientists claim that Diamond Dogs' culture greatly influenced the culture of the earth pony tribes of the north, especially the ones that currently reside in underground cities.

There are many evidences to the fact that long time ago Diamond Dogs and earth ponies in the north waged war over control of subterranean territories and minerals. The descendants of these ponies had sealed themselves below ground when Discord arrived, using their mines and vast tonnel network of Diamond Dogs to create massive underground cities, many of which managed to survive until the Liberation.

Though contacts and even trade agreements with several Diamond Dog settlements were established, their communitites mostly did not care about existance of each other, though a persistent theme in their folklore is a 'forgotten kingdom' - from which they all track their origins. While archaelogists still didn't manage to find a trace of that kingdom, they do not doubt the existance of it. They explain their lack of success by the fact that the 'forgotten kingdom' had probably moved very deep during the reign of Discord and presumably forced collapses of the tonnels leading to the ground.

You had also inspected various tools, weapons and adornments created by Diamond Dogs. Sure, they lost much of their former glory during the time they spent buried, but they were still pretty impressive.
You have time to learn about one more race or tribe. Or you can just wander around. Or even leave.

You thought that learning about dragons might be useful, so you went to the dragon exhibition. After being unable to find one you decided to ask a local curator about it.
"Dragons? I'm afraid that we don't have much to show, so there is no exhibition for them." - an eldrely pony ruefully shook his head - "They're very... incredulous when it comes to entering their territory and none had yet given us a permission to conduct excavations."
You thanked the curator and walked to exhibition dedicated to gryphons.

The exhibition was much smaller than Diamond Dog one, since most gryphons were and are living beyond the eastern sea. If gryphon came to Equestria, one could bet that he was a mercenary or adventurer seeking fame and fortune or some kind of refugee or exile - in any case he or she would not be the best representative of griffinkind.
Therefore the relations between ponies and gryphons were mostly strained. While many rulers in times before Discord appreciated gryphon mercenaries as loyal and intimidating warriors, they were shunned by general population. The fact that some griphon rulers assembled raiding parties to pillage the coastal settlements and enslave local population didn't help to estabilish mutual understanding between our races.

Because of their code of honor and martial tradition one can find them similar to pegasi of the past in many aspects. While territorial conflicts between pegasi and griffin were a common thing, they had always managed to forget about old grudges when common enemy arrived - be it a raging monster, an ambitious unicorn king or stray griffin warband.

Griffins mostly settled in the eastern parts of Equestria, though as relatively large warbands were hired by various rulers throughout the land, smaller communities could be found everywhere.

"That would be great." - you smiled and followed the filly.

While you four were enjoying fries, Last Word began recounting what she had learned in museum. Both Gust and Arcane listened to her with a look of polite interest, but you could say that former simple did not care about gryphons and diamond dogs, while latter probably knew much more about the subject.
"So, Arcane, how is your leg?" - you asked when Last Word had interrupted her speech to put another heap of fries in her mouth - and you also made a mental note to teach her table manners.
"Pretty good actually." - he replied, waving his wounded limb to illustrate his point - "Healing magic nowadays can do wonders. Of course it still hurts a bit, so I hope we will not be in a dire need for a quick escape."
"And I hope we will not be in that need even with healthy limbs." - remarked Gust.
"Oh, that's great. Also, maybe you can tell us anything about dragons? Records in that museum were pretty sparse."
"It's no surprise, really. Dragons are not nomadic and they were pretty strong to survive the reign of Discord, so there is almost nothing to excavate. Concerning their relations with Equestria - well, I suppose we will have to fight against some of them since Celestia controls both Canterlot and Castle of Two Sisters and that means that she controls the royal treasury. Sure, Lady Nightmare has some gold in her coffers, but clearly not enough to afford dragons' service. Also, that is one more reason why we need to finish that war fast."
"I see... So, any of you wants to have a drink before the mission?" - you offered, trying to lighten up the mood.
"I'll refrain." - said Arcane, raising his forehooves - "Besides someone needs to stay with Word."
"I'll pass too." - suddenly declined Gust - "Seriously, we'll need clear heads for that mission, whatever it is."

After the dinner you went to the bathroom and began conjuring and reshaping various objects out of ice.
"Rime?" - you heard Arcane's voice behind the door - "I don't want to distract you, but it looks like you had managed to lose the track of time."
"Huh? What do you mean?" - you replied, working on an ice ...thing that resembled a sea urchin.
"You were there for quite a long time and, well, we all are going to go to bed soon."
"What? How much time did I spend there?"
"Way too much. Anyway, we all need a shower, so, well, don't forget to clean after yourself."

After cleaning yourself you proceeded to your bedroom and almost instantly fell asleep.

"Uh? What? What is the time now?" - you asked, still not able to comprehend the situation around you.

With a deep sigh you climbed out of the bed and began your descent to the first floor.
After quickly completing your morning routine four of you had left the house.

"Oh, crap!" - suddenly yelled Gust - "All right, everyone give me your keys."
"What? Why?" - you asked, still not fully awoken.
"Come on, had you already forgot that we promised the bishop to return them today? You all can head to the castle, I will catch up with you soon."

"Now we can depart." - he said, levitating one of them alongside the key to Gust.
"Yeah, thanks." - pegasus replied, putting it on her back - "See you at the gates."

Then you moved to the castle. Gust has already been waiting for you there, so after briefly praising her speed you asked local guards about letting you in. Soon a guide emerged out of the castle and silently motioned you to follow him.
He led you to the same room where you met with Perturbation before, but now in addition to Lunar General there were two ponies in the armor of Steel Regiment sitting at the table.
"So you have finally arrived." - greeted you earth pony mare - "Now take a seat so I can start the briefing."

"We - and when I say we I mean everypony in this room" - she started when you all had sat down on the chairs - "are going to infiltrate an ancient deer tomb to retrieve a powerful artifact that goes by name of 'Harbinger of destruction'. Now you may wonder why it is a joint mission with Perfect Scions - the answer is that they were the ones who discovered that tomb and Lord Phoenix had personally asked me to help." - she smirked - "Yes, I too find that unbelievable, but nevertheless the tomb seems to be protected not only by spells and enchantments, but also by more mundane means" - she smirked again - "and since no one can compete with Steel Regiment in military engineering and escpecially setting traps in the tonnels we were the most obvious candidate to be asked for help. Because deer were very reliant on their magic, I want to be accompanied by a skillful mage" - she looked at Arcane - "who can recognize the impending doom and a pony" - she shifted her gaze to Last Word - "who can effectively deal with everything these horned bastards had prepared for us."

"No and no. Frontline is too far from the tomb's location and concerning deer..." - she grinned - "As far as I know almost every last one of them had gone extinct even before DIscord. Nobody knows why though, but I couldn't care less. There are a couple of isolated communtites in some shitholes but they are too far away from that tomb to bother us."
"Thanks. So how much time will it take and where can we get our rations?"
"You would not need them. We will get there on sky carraiges. The travel will take two or three hours and an hour to walk to the tomb itself. You can leave your belongings in the armory." - she said looking at yur tents - "Also there is new armor prepared for you, since your current one is not in it's best shape. And I want you all, except Lunar Mage to introduce yourselves to Phoenix as Alef. After that you can of course use your real names so we and Phoenix' retinue would be able to discern you."
"So we must pretend that we are pretending to be ourselves?" - asked Last Word and hastily added - "Ma'am."
"Essentially yes." - Perturbation smiled - "If none of you has any questions then briefing is over and you can head to the armory. After that we will wait you near the main gate - carriages should be there soon."

"Everything is clear, ma'am." - you saluted and left the room.
Guardspony was still waiting you in the corridor and he led you to the armory, where you left the tent and got yourself a nice new suit of armor. After that you were escorted back to the courtyard where two carriages, Perturbation and two earth ponies - mare and a stallion - from the briefing room were waiting for you. Now you could take a better look at their armor and noticed that they both wore the markings of a captain.
"Good. Now climb in that one." - she pointed her hoof at one of the carriages and trotted inside another, followed by her retinue.

The flight was uneventful and after a couple of hours you landed on the edge of the forest. When you left the carriage, you noticed four figures waiting for you - two ascended pegasi, mare and a stallion, a unicorn stallion and a deer stag.
"Ah, Turbo, it's a lovely night to meet, isn't it?" - pegasus stallion walked to greet the Lunar General, rising on his forehooves as he came close enough for a hug.
"Phoenix, I swear, I'll stick my hammer in your ass if you'll continue to call me that way." - Perturbation growled, but accepted his embrace.
"Oh, come on." - smiled Phoenix, breaking the embrace and waving his wing at his retinue - "Allow me to introduce captain Eternal Lux" - pegasus mare silently saluted with her blade - "And captain Mare Charmer."
"The pleasure is mine, my lady." - unicorn stallion bowed before Perturbation.
"Mare Charmer? Seriously?" - snorted earth pony mare.
"My father was quite a philanderer, my lady." - he replied.
"Irrelevant." - Phoenix waved his wing dismissively - "And the last one is Puzzling Path, an 'adventurer'."
"This deer - he will lead us through the tomb to that 'Harbinger', right?"

"Ah, my condolences concerning Lord Vision and Prosperity." - he said with a sudden grief and his voice - "And the other three are?"
"We are Alef." - you replied, trying to maintain a serious face.
"Alef? Really?" - Phoenix turned to Perturbation - "Why did you call them?"
"If that weapon has only a fraction of power you told me about then Lady Nightmare must know about it." - she replied in a stern tone.
"Of course, of course." - he grievously shook his head - "When did I lost your trust, Turbo?"
"Blood of the mountains, Phoenix!" - she roared, lifting her hammer and pegasus began to laugh.
"Oh, calm down. It's just a stupid nickname, you shouldn't be so bothered by it!"
"It's up to me to decide what will bother me, Grim." - Perturbation grunted - "Lead the way."
"All right, follow me." - Phoenix smiled and trotted towards the forest, followed by his captains.

The road to the tomb will be pretty long.
