I'd say the fandom isn't dying, sure people have let, but a lot of people have joined and are still joining, sure it's very few people but then again we were never a big fandom to begin with, the only reason it feels like it now is that the media isn't interested in us anymore even though the internet still gets butt-hurt over ponies, and some of the content creator who added a lot to the early fandom were just band-wagoners who left as soon as the next big thing came along, too be honest if you take the biggest purely brony channels on YouTube you get somewhere in the 100,000 range so it's possibly safe to say that that's roughly the size of the fandom and it'll stay that way probably even after the show ends

It's not stagnant because of a lack of drive to "own" the show. It's stagnant because
A) We don't own the show, Hasbro does, and several high profile artists got hit by a legal weed-whacker to remind us what'll happen if we go nuts with the IP like people do to independent IP like FNAF or Undertale.
B) There's nothing to talk about. All the stuff we use to speculate about have been proven totally vapid. The Royal Sisters are not funny, nor clever, nor interesting. They dump exposition and job for badguys. Derpy was a huge letdown. They showed us Griffons are a society that's falling apart because they can't make good pastries. There's no internal coherency anymore so the excuse, "What? It's a children's show!" now applies to virtually everything. Of course Celestia jobs to all the villains - it's a children's show and she's not the main character.

Really the magic disappeared when lawyers got involved, and the mystery vanished when they pulled the curtains aside to reveal the Wizard of Oz is actually a giant, green, flaming head after all, there is no twist, and it turns out the giant flaming head can't go anywhere or do anything!

Also the ponies haven't been very neurotic or funny since Hasbro's suits got more involved with the writing process.

damned if they cater to peoples fanon and make it canon, damned if they come up with something totally different to what the fandom cultivated for fanon

besides, the show was supposed to have ended with MMC, so you have no one to blame but yourselves for making the show as popular as it is to have Hasbro keeping the show going

the issue with the fanon, is that a lot of it made sense, so when they DID "use" some of it (which came from the same source as the fanon material did (the show)) you fucks cried, "pandering!"
and for the first 3 seasons, they never really developed any BG characters, which CAUSED the fandom to come up with their fanon. they didn't have to because the show was only going to be the 3 seasons anyway, so why should they have bothered?

God do I wish the show would have ended with season 3. While the final episode should have been purely focused on Twilight's ascension instead of the half assed cutie mark switch taking up half the episode, it could have been much better. That being said, the second half of that episode wouldn't have left me disappointed at all and it would have felt like a sweet and nice closing of a chapter in the lives of ponies. We were supposed to relate with Twilight from the start and it was her journey that we were using as a lense to watch the rest of the happenings in Ponyville. Season 4 tied up the loose ends with the other main 6 and showed they were almost at their goals or had reached them already and everything kind of wrapped up. Then season 5 came around and tried to force world building front and center as you explored Equestria, putting what brought most people to the show to begin with to the back burner. Season 6 was a fucking mess with a new main character who is a sociopath and a mess of recycled stories from long ago that unlike season 1, had none of the charm behind them or reasonable writing sense. Just thinking about what happened makes me want to vomit.
