Truthfully, Stage 5. I see newfags posting worthless things in otherwise decent threads or generals, almost always including a 'lol'. They're rarely called out, but when they are, they reply with the same tact as a grade schooler. Twice in the past week there's been two posts explicitly calling to attention the fact they're a woman. There was some redditor tranny youtuber the other day that had maybe one or two people telling him to fuck off, and the rest praising his 'work' that is unironically targeted to children.

2) Friends of people in the initial fandom are drawn in, with minimal effect on the fandom.

3) The fandom gains media attention. Depending on how the fandom is covered, it will either be seen as mainstream and be flooded with average people (Star Wars), or be seen as a deviant, perverse interest, and be flooded with societal outcasts. In the former case, the fandom is diluted, but newcomers see the relative popularity and positive coverage of the fandom as legitimizing its views and practices, and make some efforts to adapt. Eventually, some factionalism will emerge over issues like canon, but this will take decades. But in the latter case, the negative portrayal of the fandom causes newcomers to fragment it into subgroups, and bitter infighting ensues immediately. Factions war over cultural practices, canon, fandom activities, etcetera. Mixed coverage will result in a mix of these two outcomes.

4) At this point, the status of the fandom is wholly dependent on how stage 3 went. First of all, I want to make it clear that I think that if someone wants to convince anyone else to stop liking the show, the classic "stop liking what I don't like", that person is a fucking idiot. That being said, I think that sometimes people misinterprets some comments, like maybe if you liked X thing, and I hated it, and I post a comment saying "X was shit", that doesn't always mean that I want to convince you to hate it too. You said you liked it because you wanted to share that feeling, or you wanted to know if someone else liked it, or whatever, I said that I hated it maybe because I wanted to know if someone else hated it too, or just because I really needed to vent. It's not that much about convincing each other. And I'm not saying that you can't tell apart opinions and attacks, it's as simple as, sometimes people get way too emotional.

This is an interesting point. You think that the show will get boring before getting bad, and you'd slowly stop caring. That's the best case scenario, and that's why I asked what would you do if the show did something really bad. Not getting boring, but something that was just outrageous, when you still care about it. You think that such thing it's absolutely impossible, you think that there's no way that a show you love could do something like that, but it really happens.

And, here's the thing. If you love the show, and suddenly something happens in the show that completely ruins it for you, and when you come here to say "I can't be the only one who hated that, right?" and some other anon replies "fuck, man, I hated it too" and a bunch of people start yelling "if you don't like the show, get out", you realize that you have lost both the show and this place, when you still love the vast majority of what the show has ever done. It's traumatic.
