Honestly, I've never seen an edgy OP OC payed straight. I've only ever seen shitty "Parodies" of them. And while "Edgy" OCs are lame, is the hatred of them contributing to how bland and boring and one-dimensional most "Generic guy" or "Generic girl" or "Twilight/Pinkie/Fluttershy/Rainbow Knockoff" OCs?

Then you honestly haven't been around any fandom's art scene for any period of time. Yes the joke one exist, but there is a reason for them, and it's because edgy OP OCs do exists. (you don't know how many times I've seen Sasuke but with edge times 100, and with a more powerful Sharingan)

Sometimes an OC is just a picture the creator uses so people can identify them. If they have a backstory in the first place, then it's a simple this is their life story. Other times an OC is used in a story, and depending on the story, can make or break wither or not they're are good OCs, or shit ones.

These are a lack of creativity, and are bad on that alone, but just like above, sometimes they're just used as pictures.

As for your whole red and black isn't bad, that depends entirely on the OC in question. Sometime red and black is just colors with no meaning behind them, other times, it's pick to show that the OC is dark, brooding, mysterious, and quite. While red shows that they have been hurt, or have no problems with bloodshed wither it's done by them, or others. There is also the scars, showing that they have been in a horrific accident, got it in a battle, or from some abused they've suffered when they were defenseless.

Honestly any OC can be good or bad, but the stigma that follows red and black ones are harder to convince the former, when the stigma of the latter is true most of the time.
