Twilight: I can't really believe your story Anon, buildings with over 100 levels? Flying boats bigger than Ponyville? And yet there's no magic in your world? Please.
>Growing tired of Twilight's berating, you go out into the world to prove her wrong.

That's the prompt that started it all. So what is thread about? It's about Anon bringing human science and inventions to Equestria and a disbelieving Twilight. Although, that's not necessarily the prompt you need to follow if writing is what you desire.

I merged chapter 1 and 2, since they were too short IMO. So this is Chapter 5:

> "Prod the abyss, and the abyss prods back."
-Blacksteed IV, Duke of Easthoof

-Twilight-
>A warm mug of hot chocolate and a thick book laid in front of Twilight Sparkle, who always appreciated a cup of cozy autumn warmth when reading in chilly weather. The mug gave off wafts of sweet, milky steam as it sat on her crystal desk alongside Studies in Gemology for the Advanced Mage, which was turned to page 182 at the moment. She lifted the mug and took a sip from it as she flipped the page, revealing a chart detailing the various geometric shapes necessary for properly imbuing precious stones with potential magical power. Crystalcarving was never one of Twilight's strengths, but ever since the appearance of her crystal tree-castle she had decided to focus on that particular area of her studies. After all, if she was going to be living in a giant gemstone it would be a good idea to know more about gemology.
>Twilight knew that her new home was supposed to be an improvement from her now burnt-down library tree, but the enormous crystalline castle that she was the inhabitant of had its drawbacks. The large rooms and crystal walls made for a rather drafty castle, which was why the fireplace in her study was filled with a huge pile of burning firewood that roared and crackled as it released a soft warmth into the air. Not only that, but the floor was far too cold and hard for her taste. Hundreds of square hooflengths of carpet and rugs were brought into the castle soon after Twilight had taken residence in it, and they helped a little with the cold and provided a fair amount of protection against falls.
>>
>>29210435
>The mug clunked against the crystal desktop as Twilight set it down, entranced in her reading. Far away, a peal of thunder rolled throughout the sky, even though the sky itself was cloudless. That was strange, since the rest of the week was scheduled to be perfectly clear and sunny. Maybe some pegasi were messing around?
>But the thunder sounded way too...off. It dissipated much too quickly, and soon after the first one several more came in rapid succession, each as loud as the last. They even sounded exactly the same, which was odd considering lightning was quite unpredictable and hard to accurately replicate. Plus, there were no clouds for miles and miles, and it was rather difficult for less than a hundred pegasi to make clouds large enough to give off lightning. Something was definitely wrong, and she got up from her desk just as the last crash of thunder died down.
>Twilight trotted down the crystal hallways of her castle, the shining walls reflecting both her image and the clip-clop of her hooves. The echoes became more pronounced as Twilight entered the front entrance and its high, spacious ceiling. Somebody was knocking on the front door, and she pulled it open with her unicorn magic. Rainbow Dash was standing outside, her chromatic mane boyishly swaying as the opening of the door let a draft into the castle.
>>
>>29210456
>"Hey, Rainbow-"
>"Did you hear that, Twi? I thought thunderstorms weren't scheduled for the next two weeks..."
>"That's not thunder, Dash. It's too consistent to be lightning. Whatever it is, we gotta go check it out. I'll call the girls, follow me."
>The two ponies trotted through the main hallway all the way to the room at the far end. Inside sat a table with a large map of Equestria surrounded by six large crystal thrones. Twilight took her seat at the largest throne and tapped her hoof on one of the buttons that were on a panel in front of her. It was the emergency call button, and it was magically linked to the Element bearers through their cutie marks. Twilight didn't like to use it much, but she thought it was necessary for an event like this.
>Five minutes later, Applejack arrived at the table, clearly tired from both the apparent run to the castle and a day of hard work. Following Applejack was Pinkie Pie, who bounced and hopped into her designated seat with the constant energy she had about her. Fluttershy, though she lived near the Everfree, managed to trot inside before Ratity, who took thirty minutes to make herself "presentable, as any proper pony should." As Rarity elegantly took her seat, Twilight began talking.
>"Alright, girls, I'm pretty sure you all know why we're here. Those booms you just heard sounded a bit strange, didn't they? I think we can assume that it's not thunder, since the sky is obviously clear. I'm sure you all know that we'll have to investigate whatever it is. Do you guys know anything about it?"
>>
>>29210487
>"Ah'm pretty sure it came from the Everfree," Applejack replied. "Ah was working at Sweet Apple Acres when I heard those noises. They sure were as loud as tarnation! But I reckon they came from far away, so it's probably deep in the forest."
>"Oh, goodness gracious!" Rarity gasped. "In such a ghastly and uncivilized place? I'm not quite sure that we should be searching in such a...a...brutish location!"
>"Come on, Rarity! Don't be such a fancypants," Rainbow Dash responded. "I bet that we could totally handle whatever we find in there. And if it's being a jerk, then I'll. give it a good ol'-!"
>"Dash, I'm sure that it won't come to that. Now, anyone else have any contributions?"
>"Well, it can't be any creature," Fluttershy softly spoke. "Those booms are definitely not natural. They're too similar. And if it is a creature, then I don't think I would know much about it. After all, something that can be that loud...!"
>She slid under the table, teeth chattering as the terrifying thought of the monsters that lived in the Everfree filled her mind with fear. Fluttershy was very good at handling and taking care of animals, but her timid nature and fearful personality often got the best of her.
>"Come on, Fluttershy! Don't be afraid! I'm sure if we come across a grumpy old meanie, we can just give it a party!"
>"Is that your answer to every problem, Pinkie Pie?"
>"Well, it's not a bad one, is it, Applejack?"
>"Ah don't even wanna bother answerin'."
>"So," Twilight interjected, we know that it was from the Everfree, and that it probably wasn't a creature. Anything else?"
>The table was silent.
>"Really, nothing?"
>The table continued to be silent.
>>
>>29210519
Man I can't wait for first contact
>>
>>29210519
>"Okay then. I guess we'll have to go and see what it is. I think that me, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash should go and check it out."
>"Why not us?" Pinkie pie asked.
>"Well, uh, I don't think that, uh... you guys are... quite..."
>"Rarity's too fancy to get her hooves dirty, Fluttershy'd probably faint in under a minute, and Pinkie... you're just weird."
>"Wow, Applejack, way to be super rude!"
>"Hey, they don't call me the Element o' Honesty for nuffin."
>"She's right," Twilight added. "Rainbow Dash and Applejack can handle themselves in a fight, and I know some basic combat magic. You guys would become a liability if you didn't know how to defend yourselves, especially in a place like the Everfree..."
>"She has a point," Rarity commented.
>"And I couldn't bear hurting another creature," Fluttershy added.
>"Then it's decided. The three of us are going to go ahead and look for the cause of those noises tomorrow morning. We'll gather some supplies for our trip today. It's getting dark soon, so we'll have to get them quick. Tomorrow, we meet at the crack of dawn at Fluttershy's cottage."
>"Does it have to be that early?"
>"We want to have as much daylight as possible, Dash. Go to bed early if you have to. After all, we'll have a long day ahead of us."
>Rainbow dash groaned at the idea of having to miss out on sleep. Still, she was excited to explore the Everfree and find out what was making all the noise. It would be just like one of her Daring Do books, like Daring Do and the Adventures of Naz'roh, where Daring do had to search for the Ruby of Despair in the dangerous jungles of...
>"Sounds good," Applejack said, interrupting Rainbow Dash's train of thought. "I can get us some outdoors equipment. Sleepin' bags, ropes, maybe a tent..."
>"I can get you some food!" Pinkie said.
>"And I have some maps of the Everfree," Twilight added. "Alright girls, let's gather up what we need and get ready for tomorrow!"

-Luna-
>Like the past tens of thousands of times, Luna's mind easily passed from her spacious office to the even vaster expanses of Equestria's magic field, and it was even easier to slip into the infinite void that was the dreamscape. However, once she was in the dreamscape she immediately searched for what she was looking for: the three alien minds that she was so very fascinated by. Consciousnesses without magic that had such advanced knowledge stored within their memories, yet just out of grasp... Luna didn't want to gain the attention of those minds, and she was rather uncertain as to how they would respond. It was as likely as not that such wondrous minds could be immensely powerful, and she didn't want to awaken an unknown threat upon Equestria.
>Luna had decided to look into another mind that evening. As she approached the three points of light, she noticed that they gave off a slight twinge of fear that radiated a feeling of unease into the surrounding space. Curious, she decided to enter the red orb instead of the blue one she had looked at a few days ago. Like previously, Luna eased herself into the dream slowly before being rewarded by the same blank void of the other mind. However, instead of a bookshelf there was a metal rack with wire mesh covering the walls of it. She walked up to the rather utilitarian shelf and ran her hoof along the cold, smooth metal. Unlike the bookshelf, which was rather dusty, this rack was spotless. There was an assortment of objects on each shelf, but judging from the sword and shield on several of the items Luna could guess that the items were related to some sort of military or defense force.
>>
>>29210843
>This was certainly an interesting development for Luna. This meant that whatever those minds belonged to, they had to have some kind of army. What were they like? How many? How strong? Question after question filled her head, and she soon realized that those beings could have hostile intentions. If there was a military, then that meant defending...or attacking.
>How big of a threat were they?
>Luna knew from countless wars in her past that intelligence was the queen of the battlefield (who ruled next to the king of strategy), and she eagerly scanned the shelves for some sort of information. She eventually settled on picking up a thin booklet with a cover of thick, white paper and an illustration of a strange contraption in the shape of an L. She looked at the title of the book and was soon overwhelmed by the foreign words and phrases that were printed on the front cover.

Glock 17 Semi-Automatic Pistol, 9-Millimeter Caliber
Owner's Manual
U.S. Army
>>
>>29210860
>What did Glock mean, and what was a pistol? Semi-Automatic meant some level of automation, and apparently there were 16 other variations on this weapon. And what was "U.S.?" A country? The one thing that she could figure out was the "Caliber" part. From her knowledge of cannons, this weapon was apparently designed to fire a projectile about the size of a...marble? That was extremely odd, and she continued checking the shelves for items of interest. She soon found the weapon that was portrayed on the cover under an olive-green T-shirt and picked it up from the shelf, alongside two thin stick-like boxes that held some sort of brass pellets inside of it.
>Judging from its relatively small size, this weapon was clearly a personal small arm. For a weapon, it was surprisingly light, only about one and a half pounds. Perhaps it was because of the strange material that the lower portion (or what she assumed, from the book, was the lower portion) was made of. It was light, yet durable, and was smooth yet had a sort of fine texture to it. Holding the weapon and the sticks, she looked further into the book, flipping to the first page.
CAUTION: Follow safe firearm handling procedures before handling Glock products:
• ALWAYS assume the weapon is loaded and ready to fire
• NEVER point the weapon at anything you do not wish to destroy
• ALWAYS keep fingers off the trigger unless ready to fire...
>>
>>29211137
>Fingers...where had she heard the term before? She had forgotten the exact source, but deep in her memory she knew that they were flexible appendages on hooves that were quite similar to claws. As for the rest of the safety instructions, Luna found little of note there. Apparently Glock was a manufacturer of sorts? The first factory in Equestria had opened about fifty years ago, and Luna was proud of her country's modernization. The idea of multiple entities mass-producing weapons, though, was a disquieting thought. Equestria's weapons were forged only by order of the Princesses in the Royal Workshops and only for the use of the Royal Guard. What sort of creatures - no, country - would have such an openness towards and demand for weapons? Luna continued reading, slightly unsettled yet curious.
The Glock series of pistols is and has been an advanced and highly capable weapons system for decades, owing to its many features that give it the highest durability, best performance, and most ease of performance. This is due to its:
• Use of low-weight plastic polymers in the receiver
• A Safe-Action system that ensures safe and reliable weapon handling
• A high-capacity magazine size...
>>
>>29211156
>Before Luna could get any further, her curiosity got the best of her, and she put the manual back on the shelf. She inspected the weapon further, touching the "receiver" with her dark blue hoof. Luna noticed that the bottom of the weapon seemed to have a cavity in it, and she was rather curious as to its function. She poked one of the sticks into the bottom before accidentally sliding it in. Once it had went in all the way, she was rewarded with a click that accented the locking of the box inside the weapon. Luna didn't intend to do that, and she quickly searched for a way to release the box from the weapon. She pulled the metal top of the weapon back, hoping that it would release the stick. Nothing happened. Maybe she should pull on this lever...?
>It was a good thing that Luna had been pointing the weapon away from her body, because the weapon suddenly gave out a sharp crack and emitted a fiery blast from its front end. She let out a small yelp as a brass cylinder flew out of the top as the metal rail quickly snapped back and forth. The cylinder smoked and gave out a smell of brimstone as it fell to the floor with a metallic clink. The weapon soon followed suit with a clack as Luna stopped holding it with her magic, leaving nothing in the air but silence and a sharp, metallic odor.

Before I finish my dump, what image do you have in your mind of the three survivors (Leah, Andrew and Noah)? I want to see if my characters are properly portrayed.

-Noah-
>"I swear to god, Leah, don't you fucking dare take a bite out of that thing!"
>"But-"
>"LITERAL ACID BLOOD, LEAH!"
>"But-"
>"JUST NO!"
>"Fine, Noah."
>Noah sighed as he poked the giant corpse with a plank of wood, watching as the green blood ate away at the tip of it. Some of the semi-melted wood goop dripped onto the morning dew, tarnishing the fresh early-morning air with a foul, chemical smell. "Besides," he remarked, "that thing's been dead for a day. I don't want anyone getting sick because they decided to eat some hell beast's flesh. Things are getting dangerous around here, and I'd rather keep everyone fit and healthy just in case something happens."
>"He's a big guy," Andrew remarked.
>"For you, at least. This thing might not be the biggest one out there," Noah stated. "Who knows what other deadly crap we're going to find? Damn, we should have built our defenses up better."
>"That's probably not the biggest problem, though. I'm pretty sure," Leah asserted, "that that's a hydra. As in a Greek mythological monster. As in the ones known for having several heads and being super venomous. Seriously, what the heck is something that matches ancient mythology so unbelievably well doing on an alien planet? This can't be a coincidence."
>>
>>29213160
>"I don't even want to know," Noah sighed. "You know how this place is with coincidences. For now, let's just figure out how to deal with this thing. I'm pretty sure it's going to stink up pretty soon, and the acid blood isn't going to make it easier to move this away."
>"Hmmm...hang on, we should let the blood drain out before we even touch it. After all," Andrew stated, it wouldn't be good if acid were to get on us while we're moving it away."
>"Didn't the bullets do a lot of the work?"
>"Yeah, Leah, but there's still several tons of alien meat that I'd rather get out of sight. It's going to be a real challenge to shove something the size of a large truck even ten meters. Unless...Noah, don't we have a couple pounds of high explosive?"
>"About twenty pounds of Composition C, and several deton- Are you sure that's going to be alright?"
>"Yeah. I think about three ounces should take a decent chunk out of it. After that, it should be light enough to shove away from here. If not, we can always use more."
>"You sure about that, Mr. I-know-how-to-blow-up-mythical-beasts?"
>"Hey, Noah, do you just want it to sit there, rotting up the place? Or maybe you have a better plan."
>"..."
>"Then it's settled. Believe it or not, I have experience with explosive demolition, and I know how to handle high-explosives safely. I'm going to shove some shaped charges into the body, preferably with some protective gloves, and detonate it from a safe distance and behind cover. It won't spray poison everywhere or throw huge globs of meat at us, but I can ensure that the remaining mess will be relatively easy to clean up. I want to get started right now, since we still have a lot of daylight. Hopefully the entire body will be gone by mid-afternoon."
>With that, Andrew walked into the pallet-and-tent shelter, searching for breakfast and plastic explosives.

That's it for Chapter 5. I can never get enough feedback, so what do you guys think?

Story Criticism:
Already pointed out the hands/finger thing. That was just dumb.

Character Criticism:
I get the necessity of needing to remove body, but wasting your limited resources on that is a terrible idea. It'd be easier to move camp and leave a marker pointing to your new location, and also to show where you entered from.
Even if its only a few ounces, when you can't just run down to storage to get more, every bit counts, and if there's an option that doesn't use up resources you can't easily replenish, that should be the option taken.
And this is an alien creature that they're strapping explosives to, for all they know its volatile and blowing it up could turn it into a several ton bomb.

With this update Leah comes off as less quirky, and more of a dumbass.
>>
>>29215818
I'm glad that you've given me some real criticisms. The finger thing was a bit of an oversight, so I've changed it in the Fimfiction chapter (probably releasing Wednesday).

As for the explosives problem, I thought that they wouldn't really need it too much and they'd be willing to use a little bit for moving that thing away. They're living on a little meadow in the forest, so they don't exactly have much of a use for explosives. Reducing the ten ton beast into some hundred pound movable chunks, though, is a tough task, and so they expend just a little bit of their resources on getting most of it out of camp. The hydra, though, is probably not volatile, since they just peppered it with bullets without a huge explosion. And to be honest, they don't expect mythological beings (especially a hydra) to just blow up if they aren't known to do so back on Earth. I mean, if you saw a unicorn on an alien planet you wouldn't expect it to be explosive, right? Plus, Andrew knows about blowing stuff up, so he would also take precautions to ensure that he uses the least amount of explosive while preventing deadly meat debris from destroying anything.

Also, Leah just wants to sample the local cuisine. She can do some dumb stuff, but aren't smart people prone to being a little stupid at times?
>>
>>29216241
>if you saw a unicorn on an alien planet you wouldn't expect it to be explosive
I'd expect it to do everything bad possible until proven otherwise, including blow up. If I met a rabbit exactly like an Earth rabbit on an alien planet, I'd treat it like it can explode, breath fire, poisonous, venomous, and song Polka.

You can't compare mythological creatures from stories to very real creatures in front of you just because of similarities.

And even if they don't have an immediate use for the explosives, they still have a very limited supply that they can't just get more of. They have no idea when or if they'll make contact with home, so every resources counts.
Hell, I doubt they thought they would've really needed the anti-material rifle, but we see how that turned out.

Just because it didn't explode from being shot doesn't mean it won't explode from being blown up. If you shot a barrel of gas, it won't blow up either, unless the bullet causes a spark from the drum, but that's not the point. C4 will explode from a spark, but shooting it or setting it on fire won't detonate it, but its still explosive.
And even if they Reduce it to 100lb pieces, they still have to move 200 chunks of rotting, acidic, and most likely toxic flesh.

Andrew probably knows how to create a breach, I doubt his demolitions teachings go as far as how to properly dispose of a several ton unknown beasts that bleeds acid.

Eating chocolate covered ants is tasting the local cuisine.
Eating over developed eggs is stupid.
Eating a strange creature that bleeds acid is literally football helmet levels of retarded.
She reminds me of the difference between a "good" Pinkie Pie, and a "bad" Pinkie Pie.

That's my thoughts on it anyways.

>While the full nature of this energy was unknown to him, he still knew enough to isolate it.
>this energy however had a very short half-life in it pure state, so he had no way to quantify it.

I like this story, but >>29216477 has a many great points.
Blowing up a carcass of a huge toxic beast with high explosives is hella rad, but also stupid and wasteful.
Even tho they have quite a bit of various supplies, they also have no way to replenish some of them at all. Something to keep in mind.

Moving the camp would take a day or two, but would be a more sensible thing to do in this situation.
At first I was thinking 'just burn it up', but given whole corrosive blood thing, risking inhalation of toxic fumes is not worth it.
Also, who knows if there isnt a bladder full of flammable material inside it.
For all its worth, only things they know about hydra is that its big, had corrosive blood and it can be killed. They have science stuff out there, so make them at least try to analyze it a bit, dissect it or something. How the fuck can something have blood that melts stuff up but dont melt from inside?

Now on to today's episode!

>You virtually fist pump, which is a lot like a regular fist pump but without any real limbs and mildly less satisfying.
>But hey, the alien equine that you are going to call a unicorn, after coming across a reference to such a mythological creature in your archives, actually came into contact with the device again, letting you to use some of its now unneeded systems as resources to replenish your nanomachines.
>Combined with the fact that you discovered that the nerves that convey visual and audio signals are actually pretty close to conventional ones, it was a simple matter for your machines to use your freshly gathered materials to construct devices to tap into both. In fact, they should be finished in a few minutes.
>Granted, you weren’t comfortable enough with their structure to edit either to initiate contact, but you could definitely use them to get a better idea of what you are dealing with here.
>Perhaps you could get enough of an idea of their language to listen in, maybe figure out a way to talk to your host without killing them or driving them mad.
>When you first figured out that they were treating the implants as an extended part of her brain, you were half tempted to just load it up with the idea that you were there, watching, and needed help, but without a real way to communicate back and forth that would have likely led to complete madness or them voluntarily sending themselves off to an asylum.
>Ah, there we go, video feed is coming up in now!
>As it flips online the new feed pours into you, the unicorn’s vision popping up to reveal a… surprisingly 20th century, you think, house.
>>
>>29235721
>As she trots off to the fridge, you can’t help but question something you hadn’t thought of over the past few days: how do they manipulate tools?
>I mean, they only have hooves and those horn things, maybe they manipulate things with their mouths? You haven’t been paying too much attention to things like that while you were trying to crack the enigma of the unfamiliar nervous-
>You cut yourself off when an anomalous spike in her brain and the nerves leading to her horn that you had gotten pretty used to over the last few days occurs, a blue aura surrounding the handle of the fridge door before it pops open.
>You what?
>She grabs some lettuce, fucking Earth lettuce, in the same grip as your audio tap comes online, catching some whine emitting from her horn.
>No, no, no, hold up a fucking minute there.
>Running surveillance on the feeds only in the background you go back over the last few seconds, approximately fifty different simulation and analysis programs kicking on and screaming out errors in unison.
>Oh god, do they have natural contra-gravity generators built into their fucking heads?
>Did the Gatebuilders fuck around and shove shit into these assholes and that is why there is stuff you don’t get?
>Does this mean that the Gatebuilders stole plant life from your planet to put here, or it was the opposite?
>You would have definitely detected it if it was something magnetic in nature.
>Switching back over to the feed you watch in something between confusion and excitement as the unicorn grabs a knife in that very same aura and makes a fucking salad complete with croutons, tomato, and something that looks vaguely like ranch dressing.
>Are you getting punked? You are pretty sure that pranks like this have a hard legal limit of six months in duration.
>>
>>29235727
>You pound your non-existent face into a non-existent wall in order to kill the pain of the situation, browsing through another dozen libraries of information in an attempt to come up with something, anything.
>Maybe, just maybe, you could get the unicorn to explain it if you ever are able to talk with her.
>In between running the sea of calculations you ready up and package some more information, carefully selected.
>Perhaps if you boost her knowledge enough over time you could get an understanding of her language, get her to build one of those ancient CRT monitor things, then communicate though that claiming to be some ancient spirit of knowledge.
>That is what primitive cultures generally believe, right?
>You know what? While everything crunches, you need to destress. You can tell that this is going to be hard as fuck to crack and bashing you head into the stone wall over and over will just slowly drive you up the wall.
>Screening the new data packet carefully, you send it off and decide to finally relax for a few hours.
>Booting up the AutoDM and a module you hadn’t run yet, you enter a virtual shell; it was time for some less maddening things.
>Maybe when you get back your sims will have something.

>Glancing at the whiteboard in one of the labs through the window on the way into work, you freeze up. How could they had made such a fundamental mistake?
>Light can obviously behave as both a particle and wave-
>Wait, where did that come from?
>That doesn’t seem right.
>You know that they taught you in school about the particular nature of light, and that sure doesn’t match up with-
>You raise a hoof to your head as a stab of pain shoots through you.
>No, no, it couldn’t be right, could it?
>You knew the duality is true, you just know it!
>>
>>29235732
>Diverting your path, you walk up to the lab door and knock, waiting patiently.
>Somepony… one, you don’t know who, did an experiment to prove something like this, right?
>Something about two slits?
>A minute or so later a grumpy looking stallion that you can’t remember the name of answers the door.
>”What is it, intern?”
“This is going to sound really weird but do you have a clamp, some aluminum foil, a laser emitter, and a wall in a dark place I can use for a few minutes tops?
>Judging by his raised brow you definitely got his interest, at least.
>What is his name? Limelight? Prismatic Light? It was something with light.
>“What for?”
>How are you going to explain this?
”I have a theory on light acting like a wave, all I need to do is shine a light at some paper, I won’t damage anything, promise!”
>Real smooth.
>”Are you trying to dodge out of work, kid?”
>You were a university student on break, thank you very much.
“No, no, no, I just need a couple minutes then I’ll get out of your hair, honest.”
>He sighs deeply.
>”Fine, but don’t bug me afterwards, and anything you break you buy. Aluminum is in cupboard 6B and the emitter is in F8.”
“Thank you!”
>”I’ll also be watching you very closely, intern.”
“No issue!”
>You hurriedly walk over to the marked out cabinets and grab both items, cutting a small sheet and setting up at a table a short distance from a wall.
>Pulling your knife out of your bags you cut two slits a short distance away from one another.
>Setting the sheet up on the table you use your bags on either side to hold it in place.
>Double checking that it is steady, you draw the blinds with your magic.
>Cutting off your magic, you carefully position the beam to point at the sheet and click it on.
>>
>>29235741
>Rushing over to the far side of the aluminum foil, true to your word, there is the representation of the interference pattern on the wall, just as you thought.
>But wait, this doesn’t prove that it is both, it just proves that it CAN act as a wave.
>Didn’t previous experiments prove that it acts as a particle as well? You need to experiment more, you need to-
>A hoof is placed on your shoulder.
>You tense up and look over at the stallion’s face as he almost in slow motion goes through a gamut of emotions, from completely uncomprehending to shock back to uncomprehending and to shock again before settling into a dim smile.
>”Do you know what you just did?”
>Oh no, did you break the emitter without knowing?
“I… proved myself right?”
>”Assuming that we can get this to replicate neatly, this very well might have overturned modern thought on the nature of light. I’m not sure what it means exactly, but if light is not a particle-”
>You, overturn everything? Where did you get this from? Did they really not know?
“It’s both.”
>”What?”
“You’ll find that there are some situations where using it as a wave is the correct option, some where seeing it as a particle is, and some where either work, I’m pretty sure.”
>That feels right. Is it possible that you misinterpreted your cutie mark all along and you were just magically gifted this knowledge… somehow. That makes sense, right?
>”Let me just, ah, retest this.”
>You watch him go to cut slits in a sheet mimicking yours when you stop him.
“Holes need to be small for allow for proper showing of this property. Use a sharper knife.”
>You go to pass him yours but he levitates a better one of his own out of a nearby desk first.
>Slipping yours back away you watch him try your experiment himself, obviously getting the exact same results, look of annoyance long since replaced with interest and a bit of awe.
>>
>>29235751
“Just, uh, wait right here, I need to go get the boss. While we can’t rule out mistakes just yet, this is certainly looking promising.”
>Turning off the emitter he leaves the room, leaving you alone with your thoughts.
>What came over you there? What happens next?
>You walk slowly off to the side, staring at the set up experiment.
>You suddenly have a feeling that this is really going to bite you in the ass in the long run.
>Too late to back out now, however.
>A few minutes later, your boss, the lazy bugger that he is, actually showed up, no doubt drawn away from important doughnuts.
>He looks tired as he enters trailed by the stallion from earlier, trotting over to the whiteboard and looking at the equation blankly, then to your setup experiment.
>Back to the whiteboard again, staring at it uncomprehend-
>”Well, looks like she proved Dawn’s theory completely wrong, if this isn’t misleading.”
>You might have slightly underestimated him.
>He turns to you, mild smile gracing his face.
>”Say, Astral Spark, what exactly is your cutiemark in?”
“Astronomy, sir.”
>You are just here for some general credits towards lab experience and nothing related to your field had spots clear.
>”Hmm. If this is what you do for physics, I can’t imagine what you’ll do in your field.”
>Your heart jumps up into your throat.
>You, a revolutionary scientist?
>Perhaps you would be set for life, and never have to work again thanks to all the cash rolling in? You could also easily end up in the textbooks and be remembered for centuries for advancing the knowledge of all ponykind.
>”Astral Spark, can you hear me?”
“Hmm? Sorry, I was a bit lost in thought.”
>You probably shouldn’t be putting the cart in front of you, especially when your boss is talking.
>>
>>29235765
>”As I was trying to say, do you have any rules on how you think particles should behave, then?”
“Yes, of course!”
>You really don’t.
>Before you are able to think up a way to get out of this, however, a marker is levitated over to you, which you snatch.
>Subtly gulping, you trot slowly, delaying the inevitable, over to the whiteboard and clear off a section and try to think of where to start and it just… comes.
>First, you need to describe the basics.
>From there, you need to describe some particulars and the implications of such.
>Before you know it, the entire board is full and you still have more explanations and calculations.
>”I get that your particle theory has experimental support, but electrons bouncing around weird shapes around a dense core? Neutral mass as a particle? I’m not sure I can believe it.”
>You snort, this is correct, it HAS to be correct.
”I assure you, this is correct and I will be able to prove it, but not as easily as this experiment. It fits, but the phenomena generated by them are generally less visible.”
>Perhaps you just misinterpreted your cutie mark, and rather than an astrologist you are meant to unravel the secrets of the universe?
>That doesn’t seem right either, though, that CAN’T be right, everyone just knows what their mark means, right?
>”I’ll send a letter off to Canterlot University immediately about this, someone has to let them know.”
>You glance over to your boss at that comment.
>CU? The school you wanted to get into but couldn’t? This is going so much faster than you thought.
“Do you mind if I just take a walk for a bit? I’m feeling a bit lightheaded.”
>You weren’t, but you did need some time to think.
>”Do go ahead, myself and the professor here have some things to talk about.”
>You nod and walk out of the room before making your way outside, enjoying the air.
>>
>>29235771
>Fucking panic.
>How the fuck did you forget to check the required library on all the basic information packets you were loading?
>Why was basic quantum mechanics listed as a requirement for the functionality of basic plant anatomy?
>...Well fuck, it appears that Begonia Pavonina uses quantum mechanics and blue leaves to manipulate light to survive.
>The listing of such as a factoid tripped some auto-linking utility and off it went preloading related material cascading out in a landslide of bullshit.
>Even better, from the looks of those equations you discovered your host showing off to others, something already made them think of said mechanics and list quite a bit of them down.
>You guess at least now know, from comparing those copies of the equation to your own, how their scientific notation and numbers work, you guess. Combine that with a couple days worth of your host reading shit, and you might eventually have enough to plug in to make a translation program for text, maybe!
>I mean, you can’t really put the cat back in the bag now given erasure might drive her mad and that this is objectively awful in every way, but hey, at least you got something out of it.
>Turning your attention back towards your host you find her standing at home making dinner with that bullshit telekinesis that you still need to figure out. With a sigh, you start to crunch numbers again as you watch your host go about her business, cataloging everything that looks vaguely like a word, in the background as you build up a database. Eventually, your host picks up a book to read and you internally give a quick cheer before processing each page into your system in-between computation cycles.
>>
>>29235779
>Perhaps you should tell her about you, albeit in a subtle way so she doesn’t freak out too much. A suicide would be the worst and you would be back on the slow route to having a body again. Can’t be too subtle, though, that is how cults get started. Maybe, just maybe you could input the tiny realization that contact to the cube crammed the contents of a vast library into her head and let on that there is a tiny transmitter and touchscreen combo inside it for contacting the sender.
>Of course, you would have to reconfigure the innards of the cube into such while she is sprinting over to get it, but such would be trivial.
>You’ll have to think on it.

>Well, looks like today is going to be a busy day.
>As it stands, you are making sure you have everything you need in your bags for heading to Canterlot, which was exciting, to say the least. You were there maybe, what, once or twice as a filly?
>To think that you were on your way there to explain your discoveries to some of the biggest names in many fields was amazing, to say the least.
>After you got back to the office, you found out that your boss had apparently sent a letter off to CU with some of the information, and by the time you headed into work the next day he had already gotten a reply asking for you to come over with the data.
>Too bad that you didn’t really discover it, whoever made the cube presumably did.
>You glance towards the direction of your workplace through the window as you finish packing you bags, stepping out through the front door not long after.
>You could tell your boss of the sudden realization last night, Tartarus, you know you should, but you didn’t. Whoever did it has a specific plan for you, and the draw of being able to get the glory from revolutionizing several fields is too great.
>>
>>29235785
>What, do you tell your boss and go back to your mundane life of nothing and boring day ins and day outs? Do you ignore the call to grab the mysterious device that apparently is inside the cube and risk having all the knowledge ripped away the moment you go to demonstrate it in front of anyone of note?
>No, you are playing along, at least for now.
>Heading towards your workplace, you drop off your suitcase at the front and make your way slowly towards the warehouse, trying to avoid detection.
“Astral Spark, aren’t you supposed to be getting on that train?”
>Don’t panic, you can handle this.
>You slowly turn around to face him and fake a smile.
“Yeah, was just on my way over, boss, I just forgot my quill when I was storing stuff away the day before. I know exactly where it is, I just need to grab it.”
>“Alright then, you were in the warehouse, yeah?”
“Yes sir.”
>“Make sure to tell Velvet to take her lunch at two when you are back there then, I forgot to tell her earlier.”
>Buck.
”I’m on it boss.”
>You walk away from him and immediately drop into a scowl after he is around the corner. You would need to be careful about this, can’t let anyone know.
>Quickly, you make your way back to the warehouse and place your ear on the door, but alas, it is too thick to make out the noises of anypony on the far side.
>Now or never, you suppose.
>Slowly, you open the door and speak loudly to make sure your voice carries enough.
“Hey Velvet, it’s Astral Spark! The boss says to take your break at two, and I’m just going to be here for a few as I look around for my quill.
>”Alright then, I’ll help!”
>She sounds to be several rows away, it seems.
“No, no, I’ll be fine, you go on with what you’re doing.”
>>
>>29235793
>She was another one of the interns, to your memory, although you and her never really talk.
>”Please, trust me, it’ll be a nice break from the monotony.”
>She pokes her head around the corner.
>Buck again.
>Quick, you need something!
“Hmm, alright, thanks! I start from the back, you start in the front and we meet in the middle, I guess?”
>”Sounds alright, I suppose.”
“Great, let’s get started, then.”
>You walk over and quickly step past her as the mare starts walking the row, immediately heading for where the cube is stored.
>Glancing either way and making sure that her hoofsteps are sufficiently far away, you cautiously slide open the drawer and snag the cube. Now, how do you make this open?
>Almost immediately after you pick it up, however, you hear a very slight hiss and freeze up. Now, running along the length there is a slight line, almost invisible, but you pull and it comes into two halves.
>You aren’t quite sure what it is, but something is rolled up there. You grab it, it feeling a bit like glass but weirdly malleable, plus the short rod in there with it before stuffing both into one of your side saddlebags. Pressing both halves of the cube together it clicks and the line disappears.
>You waste no time putting it back and making it look like you were looking.
“Found it!”
>You slip a quill out of your bag and quickly rub it in a bit of dust from the floor before levitating it back up before trotting a few rows up to find your partner.
“It was just on the floor, must have slipped out of my bag.
>”Yikes. Make sure the safety manager never hears of this or you’ll get an earful about what could’ve happened if some of the more magical things in the locked down section reacted to feathers.”
>You suppress a shiver at that, you had only been through two of those lectures and you are not looking forward to another ever again.
>>
>>29235802
“Yeah, I’ll make sure of that. Anyhow, see you, Velvet, don’t forget about the lunch.”
>”See you about, Astral.”
>At that, you walk out of the room and breath a sigh of relief, quickly making your way up to the front and bailing with your suitcase in tow.
>It was a quick walk to the train station and you arrived maybe ten minutes before boarding, which suits you quite fine, as does the fact that apparently few people are riding this particular train.
>After boarding and ticket check you settle into a booth you luckily get to yourself before pulling the twin objects out of your bag.
>Eyeing the long one first of all, you examine it and find there is a very, very small button near one end, which you experimentally click.
>Without warning, the other end expands outwards and you drop it out of shock on the table in front of you, before feeling just a tad silly. It was obviously an extendable stylus of some sort, but for what?
>You take a close look at the other object before finally realizing it is actually a thin sheet folded up and carefully unfold it, setting the small thing on the table.
>Without warning, a foreign symbol appears from nowhere on the black surface and you jerk back in surprise, thankfully not dropping anything this time. A moment later, the symbol disappears and you are instead greeted with a list of Equestrian letters along the bottom of the thing and a blank black section at the top.
>This is it? You guess the principles behind doing such is impressive.
>You glance down at the thing and see a coherent word that most certainly wasn’t there a moment prior.
>”Hello.”
>There is a short pause before it is followed.
>”Tap the rod on the letter you want to write, the bottom right key to send, and the top left key to remove previous letters. We have much to discuss.”

And that is all for this time. Now that I'm not dead, questions, comments?

I've found that people around here are most vocal when displeased and generally quiet when satisfied. Silence doesn't mean they're uninterested, it simply means that they're... I think satisfied is the right word. You've done nothing wrong, but the latest update wasn't significant enough to spark discussion. Since your chapters are generally on the short end most of them will fall into this category. This isn't a bad thing as far as storytelling or reader retention goes. Indeed, more frequent updates are probably best for reader retention, and shorter chapters lend to that. But it's not great for sparking discussion.

One of the best things about 4chan in my experience is that people are open and honest when you fuck up. The drawback is that getting input when things are going well is akin to pulling teeth. You can sometimes get a bit out of them by asking for input on specific things or raising specific questions as I usually do at the end up my updates. I'd suggest you try that going forward, especially if there's a part you're unsure of or unsatisfied with. Point to one idea or scene and ask what people think about that part in particular.

As for my critique? I'll post it anonymously. Either here or on fimfiction. Perhaps I already did. My thoughts on your work needn't be tied to my name or my work. Being a writefag doesn't make my opinion on a story any more or less valid. I'm just using this tripcode because being a writefag DOES make my understanding of audience interaction on 4chan more valid. I've been where you are before, and it doesn't mean people have stopped reading. It more likely means they don't have anything important to say.

And to my readers. Almost ready.

On a micro scale - magic is efficient enough to warrant any manipulation through it's application, though transmuting anything larger will be woefully inefficient.
On a small scale - alchemy probably surpasses any modern technology in ability to transmute one material into another as well as in efficiency, although rare reagents may be required.
On a large scale - modern technology, in most cases, largely depending on reagent requirements, surpasses alchemy in mass-production of various materials, especially with automation of some of the processes.

Of course, if you're an alicorn, you can mass-produce impossibly complex alloys to your heart's content, but, by the end of the day, you'll be wishing that you weren't immortal.

This took WAY longer than it should have.

>You are Luna.
>You are PISSED.
>Because no matter how hard you try, it’s not PERFECT.
>It has to be PERFECT!

>”I’m sure it’s fine.”

>One of your newer guards.
>Not yet trusted enough to have the enchanted necklaces that keep your elites hidden.
>Also not trusted enough for you to bother learning their name.

“The spiral on her horn goes around seven times. Not eight.”

>”Who cares?”

“It’s wrong. WRONG!”

>You’d much rather have anypony else guarding the door.
>But all your good agents are already tied up.
>The minotaurs aren’t marching on Equestria. For all the damage she did, Twilight at least scared them off.
>But word is going to reach them soon enough that she’s incapacitated.
>So you need to sabotage them NOW.
>Structures are being razed. Weapons are being stolen. Disinformation is being spread. And indeed, crops are being burnt.
>You normally don’t resort to such harsh measures as that.
>Most of the time a convenient lie or two will suffice.
>But as it stands even the kobolds could sack Canterlot if they got organised.
>Most of the guards of both stripes have deserted.
>All the alicorns save for Cadence have been crippled.
>As it stands, ANY of the predatory species could pose a threat when organised.
>Ponies aren’t naturally gifted warriors.
>They need an advantage.
>And since you can’t raise your forces up fast enough, you’ll instead take theirs down.
>Which leaves the palace with a couple dozen guards total, nearly all Celestia’s staff.
>What remains of it that is.
>Even though they’re sticking with domestic affairs they’re far too spread thin.
>When once they numbered in the thousands they’re now under a hundred strong.
>And your forces are even thinner.
>You silently curse yourself for neglecting morale for so long while adding recruiting to your mental checklist.
>One more thing you don’t have time for.
>>
>>29255790
>Somehow, despite having a seemingly infinite lifespan, you always find yourself pressed for time.
>And constantly rebuilding your sister is eating into that stunningly scarce resource.
>You throw the imperfect horn to the ground in disgust, resolving to fix it later.
>Instead you’ll get back to the internal repairs.
>The first step is to replace the self breaking wires- the fuses.
>Or was that last?

“Where did- ah.”

>In your saddlebags.
>The rectangle you used to talk to the visitor is also Celestia’s repair manual.
>You’re starting to become jaded to the marvels of these things.
>Where once you’d be amazed by a device that could carry voice over such long distances and stunned by a book that could hold entire libraries on its one page, you’re now rather underwhelmed.
>Your stay in the Sanctuary has shown you just how basic such a device really is.
>You walk over and throw your bags over your back.

>”We got an intruder!”

>The door swings open.
>Captain Spitfire pushes by your stunningly impotent guard and walks in.
>She’s either oblivious to the armed guard that she just swatted aside, or unimpressed.
>The good captain takes a moment to look at your progress.
>Celestia has been decapitated, a task that was rather emotionally taxing on you.
>But necessary.
>Her ‘head’ has been painstakingly and perfectly remodelled.
>Save for the obvious lack of the horn which remains a work in progress.
>The new head was reattached at the neck using lightning and molten metal.
>The seam still needs to be polished away, but it will hold.
>The faceplate has been slid aside revealing the chaotic mess of tangled wires within.
>The colour coding does little to abate the confusion within.

>”How much longer?”

“I don’t know.”

>”You’re certain you can do this? It’s been two days.”

“Absolutely.”
>>
>>29255799
>It may take some time.
>Even simply following the instructions is challenging.
>The visitor’s alien nature is abundantly clear when he teaches.
>The wording which was made to be simple and readily understood is still dense and complex.
>Statements about how the lightning will flow using mathematical formulae that assume knowledge well beyond your grasp.
>Apparently |F|=ke*(|q1q2|)/r^2
>And supposedly that is somehow relevant to something.
>Even dumbed down this stuff is beyond your comprehension.
>But regardless of whether or not you know why or how, you know what.
>What you must do to reverse the damages.
>And how to read the internal diagnostics.
>All the little green lights are shining save for a precious few.
>So you KNOW that you’re making progress.

“If you doubt me, then you underestimate my love, Captain. I’ll gladly devote ten thousand years to this if need be. There is no amount of time that I wouldn’t devote to bringing her back. Though I hope to be done within the week.”

>”And if it’s beyond your abilities?”

“It’s not.”

>A quick glance lets you know she’s not entirely confident in that statement.

“But if it were, I’d change my abilities. Now I must ask that you leave, I don’t need any distractions right now.”

>”Well, your ‘guest’ just woke up. I thought you’d like to know.”

>Sparkle.

“Oh. Well, perhaps a short break is in order. Let’s go check in on them.”

>As you climb out of the cellar you call out behind yourself.

“And next time there’s an intruder, I expect you to stab them. That spear isn’t decorative, and the things in that room aren’t replaceable.”

>You hurry your way back to the dungeon’s basement eager to continue your fun.
>>
>>29255803
>Your previous experiment, the Cup of Sorrow as you’re calling it, was a partial success.
>It evidently created the level of suffering you were looking for.
>Perhaps too much, even, as Sparkle tried to drown herself after mere hours.
>Even with speedy intervention and Alicorn endurance, it took some time before she was ready to go back.
>Not to the same thing, of course.
>You needed something different.
>Something which doesn’t offer her the choice of suicide.
>You’ve got a couple interesting ideas you’d like to try.
>But first you’d like to have some words with her.
>Going down beneath, you grip a torch with your hooves.
>And find her locked in a cell.
>Strapped down to a makeshift gurney.
>She doesn’t look good.
>It’s plainly obvious at a glance that she hasn’t been cleaned off since her ordeal, what with the matted and fur and messy mane.
>Thankfully the process itself washed away the worst of the mess else she’d look like a real wreck.
>As is she simply appears like a limp rag.

“We’ll be needing rats.”

>”Rats?”

“Place them upon your victim's body under a container from which they cannot escape. They will seek egress and chew a way out. Through the one surface upon which their teeth will find purchase.”

>Sparkle lets out a sob.
>You grin.
>The captain leaves, presumably to find rats.
>She closes the heavy oaken doors behind herself to ensure your privacy.
>You wish you had some way to signal her not to waste her time.
>The rats aren’t part of your current plan.
>You’ve already tested that in the past.
>It takes too much work.
>Too much monitoring to make sure the victim doesn’t perish.
>And it makes far too much mess.
>But it’s a compelling threat.
>And the art of torture is far more psychological than physiological.
>By giving her something to dread, you’ve turned the waiting period into a kind of torture all its own.
>>
>>29255812
“You couldn’t even give me one day. Not A SINGLE DAY. Now, some of that might be Cadence messing up her timing, I will grant. But either way it’s a pretty poor show! How do you expect to withstand the next million years if you can’t handle a SINGLE DAY?”

>”What would Celestia think?”

>She speaks clearly and firmly without a hint of fear in her voice.
>Which comes as quite the surprise to you.
>You thought her will totally broken.
>Was it an act?
>Surely not. Defiant ponies don’t try to drown themselves.
>How could she have recovered so readily?
>And how is she pushing past the mounting dread?
>You watch her for a bit.
>Deep, slow breaths.
>Almost like that stress exercise ‘Tia was so fond of.

“She trained you pretty well. Not well enough, of course. Had she succeeded we wouldn’t be here right now. You’d have walked away from magic altogether. Yet here we are.”

>She’s purging herself of emotion.
>The stress exercise was originally meant to dull rage and pleasure.
>But why could it not work against dread?
>You’ll need to amp up the pressure if you intend to get to her with anything other than actual pain.

“Imagine for a second, Twilight. What would you do if somepony murdered your whole family before your eye? Crushed their skulls while you were forced to sit idly by and watch?”

>She starts violently thrashing against her binding.
>Screaming curses at you.
>Demanding that you leave them out of it.
>You wait for her to tire out.

“And imagine if they also killed each and every one of your friends? You were all alone because EVERYPONY you’d ever loved had just been done in by this one miserable wretch you’d already despised? Applejack. Pinkamina. Rarity. Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy. Each slaughtered one by one. What would you do the the one who’d done this to you?”
>>
>>29255819
>Which one you can not tell.
>A violent shower of sparks spews out of her stump, doubtlessly burning at her every nerve.
>She keeps pushing despite the piercing shriek she lets out.
>Before finally falling limp.
>Crying softly.

“Yes. That sounds about right. You see, Twilight. There is nopony in my life save for ‘Tia. She is my whole family. And all of my friends. There are mortals whom I like, yes, but they don’t last nearly long enough to be my friends. They all perish long before I get to know them. Being so old is lonely, Twilight. And so I’m left with but one pony. ONE pony to be the whole of my family. The entirety of my friends. One solitary pony to be my whole life. What I asked you to imagine is what you’ve done to me. So now, perhaps, you understand what I have in mind for you.”

>”What-”

>She chokes back another sob.

>”What would princess Celestia think if she knew what you’re doing?”

>That same question.
>One you don’t wish to consider.
>This wretch has no right to judge you.
>And she most certainly has no right to use your sister against you!

>”What. Would. She. THINK?”

>You walk over to her.
>And stomp on her ribs.
>You can feel them crack beneath your hoof.

“I’m going to make you hurt, Twilight. I’m going to invent new ways to inflict suffering, ways to stretch it out forever. I’m going to make Tartarus seem like a damn SPA. And just when you think there’s no greater kind of pain, when you think you’ve reached the absolute limit on suffering, THAT is when I’ll finally get started on the main course. I will PERFECT the art of torture on you, Twilight. And the best part is that, being an alicorn, even death won’t save you. You’re mine, Twilight. You will be forever. Are you ready? Because it’s time to re-invent pain.”

>You kick her head.
>Again.
>And again.
>A blast rings out and you’re showered with debris.
>You turn to face the blast.
>And when the dust settles...
>>
>>29255824
>You are Spike.
>And you’re terrified.
>The fact that you’re flying relatively slowly does little to calm your nerves.
>The fact of the matter is that, though dragons may have been meant to fly, they weren’t meant to fly this high!
>Nearly four kilometers above Canterlot, the world looks so very different than it does down on the ground..

“Is it really a good idea to jump out of this thing? It seems to be working fine.”

>”It’ll be awesome!”

>You had no idea this was going to happen.
>One minute you were strapping a bracer onto your left arm to compliment the weapons mounted on your right.
>The next you were being told you’d be falling into Canterlot.
>On your own.
>Jumping out of a perfectly functional airship.
>While it’s working?
>This guy might just be insane.
>The side panel of the aircraft folds down exposing you to the thin atmosphere.
>A strong gust of wind nearly sucks you out as you stare down at the clouds.
>Unmoving.

>”Go ahead. I’ll catch you if something goes wrong.”

>So very high.
>It would be akin to jumping from Cloudsdale five times over.

>”Do it, faggot!”

>You don’t move.
>Not at first anyway.
>Out of the blue your cybernetic wings pulse violently.
>Even without flight magic the knock is hard enough to push you out of the safety of the cabin.
>You look down at the dark night sky as your ride accelerates away.
>You look up at the ground as it slowly approaches.
>And you scream.
>Just a little bit.
>Instinct takes over and you channel flight magic.

RECALCULATING

>Small pulses of flame come out from behind you.
>You don’t notice a change in your trajectory.
>Even were you calm it’s unlikely you’d notice the change.
>This high up only a miniscule change in vector is needed for a course correction.
>And as you fall, something strange happens.
>The fear leaves you.
>You’re in freefall so far above the ground, wind howling past you as you plummet.
>And yet only a little bit scared.
>>
>>29255828
>It’s not like when he was in your head though.
>Not like when you first woke up after being crushed, when he disabled your ability to feel fear.
>There’s still a sense of worry in the back of your head, it’s just being drowned out by excitement.
>Your wings unfurl slowly and you shoot forward, your momentum being converted to make you glide into the heart of the city.
>The strain on your back as they pull against the air stings slightly.
>And so you find yourself shooting through Canterlot skimming over the rooftops.
>Abject terror returns to you once more as you sink lower and lower all the while shooting forward far too quickly.
>And just when you brace for impact the wings tilt upward changing your trajectory.
>For a precious moment you stand perfectly still in the skies above Canterlot surveying the surroundings.
>Or rather, you would look around if you weren’t freaking out.
>You start falling straight downward.
>Gently.
>For the second time in your trip flames jut out behind you, much more violently this time.
>And you slowly descend into the streets below.
>To your amazement a fairly large crowd has collected below you.
>Almost exclusively pegasi, though as you approach the ground a few unicorns and earth ponies start to approach.
>The ponies didn’t scatter in terror as they once would have.
>Do they not fear you?
>Or is something compelling them to approach despite their fright?
>You touch down gently after falling from so very high.
>The rush of fear and excitation leaves you allowing elation to take its place.
>You let out a cry of joy despite the audience.
>Despite how frightening that was you desperately want to do that again.
>The ring of ponies crowd in closer ruining the moment somewhat..
>A teal pegasus with a fiery orange and yellow mane pushes through the crowd and approaches you.

>”The prophet hath come!”

>The crowd erupts into wild cheers.
>Your ears partially deafen themselves to compensate.
>>
>>29255831
>”Sister Lightning Dust at your service. How may I aid you?”

>Prophet?
>Sister?
>Ugh.

“Why are you calling me a prophet?”

>The crowd starts chattering loudly.
>You can make out a few phrases over the din.

>”We love you!”
>”Have mercy!”
>”Boss me around!”

>”Thou hast descended from the heavens upon wings of steel and flame! Thou art clearly blessed by Zaius with the gift of the steel! Thou art more than a mere mortal!”

“Stop talking like that! It’s annoying!”

>The masses continue to murmur.
>Somepony soon exclaims.

>”The first commandment! Don’t speak in middle Equestrian!”

>”No, you idiot! The first commandment is to not be annoying!”

“You’re both acting like idiots! Stop it!”

>”Another commandment! Don’t be idiots!”

>”He has spoken!”

>And with that you start to wonder.
>If you’re a prophet to then, will these ponies will do whatever you tell them to?
>That could be incredibly useful going forward.
>But you’re not sure what to do with them just yet.
>You don’t want them following you.
>But you want to be able to track them down later.
>But how?
>There’s no way a single dragon could find all these ponies if they went back to their day to day lives.
>But then, you’re not just a dragon anymore.
>You connect to the network and ask.

>Is there any way I could easily track these ponies?

ALL PONIES WITHIN TWENTY METERS OF YOU HAVE BEEN TAGGED.
THEIR LOCATIONS WILL BE MONITORED

>You can track ponies that easily?
>No way.

>Locate Twilight Sparkle.

>Your ‘bad’ eye is no longer showing you the world around you.
>Instead, it’s showing you a map to Canterlot palace.
>With a tag saying ‘last spotted 67 hours ago’.
>Does he know where EVERYPONY is?
>Or just certain ponies of interest?

>Locate Rarity.

>You’re brought back to reality by the concerned question.
>Apparently you’ve been standing still staring off into space in front of this whole crowd.
>They have no idea what you’ve been up to.
>You’ll need to be careful not to look creepy when you use that thing.

“The time is not yet right! But be ready! For some day soon it WILL be time to ACT! I shall contact you when the time is right. For now, we wait. Return to your homes and speak not of this affair!”

>”HE HAS SPOKEN!”

>Most of the crowd dispurses quickly.
>Some stay to catch a few more furtive glances at you before moving on.
>But before too long, all have departed.
>Save one.
>A powder blue pegasus.

>”You shan’t deceive me, false prophet!”

>You really don’t care.
>You’re willing to make time for useful idiots.
>But useless idiots?
>You just walk away.
>Later you remember you were already where you wanted to be.
>You sheepishly go back to the square in which you landed.
>Ponies ARE watching you.
>They’ve seen you make that mistake.
>And so it is with great relief that you push your way into the seemingly mundane building and escape from their gaze.
>If ponies are going to be accosting you in the streets and calling you ‘prophet’, you’re going to need a secretary of some sort.
>Somepony to keep the riffraff away.
>You should be able to do that.
>He said…
>He said you were the richest being in the world.
>Your knees quake as you walk through the empty home.
>You enter the washroom and close the door.
>You walk to the far wall and place your claw on it.
>The wall slides away and you see a circular metal floor.
>>
>>29255847
>When you step on it it slowly descends deep below the surface.
>Minutes pass as your anticipation grows.
>The waiting is proving to be far harder on you than falling from the heavens.

>No, a pool full of golden coins big enough for you to swim in!
>And it’s all YOURS!

>Why should you give up YOUR hoard to a bunch of pathetic ponies?
>They can all ROT for all you care!
>Each and every one of them.
>Twilight will be fine.
>Who else do you need?
>That bitch Diamond Tiara?
>The annoying Crusaders?
>You’re looking forward to the day that the Flower Trio die and you never need to deal with their hysterics again.
>Rarity-
>Rarity...
>The elevator comes to a stop.
>Heavy blast doors sit before you waiting for authorisation to open.
>It’s time for you to claim what’s yours.
>To live out your life’s dream, to live EVERY dragon’s dream!
>To hold unparalleled wealth.
>And Rarity will grow old.
>And die.
>And you’ll never see her again.
>Her perfect beauty will never be yours to own.
>You may have Rarity in your hoard.
>Or the gold.
>But not both.
>You yell out a word that would have you grounded for a week.
>The sound fails to echo throughout the shaft as you rocket upwards, intent on leaving this place as fast as possible.
>You can’t be trusted to hold that wealth.
>You’ll need somepony to help you with it.
>Twilight, perhaps?

>Locate Twilight Sparkle.

>The map gets drawn to the palace once more.
>She hasn’t been spotted since you last checked.

>Set course.

>You run outside and close the door.
>The moment it’s shut your wings start firing and banking to take you to your destination.
>With a minor exertion of will you feel the weight leave your body and immediately you lift off the ground.
>>
>>29255850
>You’re still shaking at the thought.
>A mountain of gold large enough to drown even the grandest of dragons.
>Ponies flee as you shoot through the skies leaving a thin trail of saliva in your wake.

“NO!”

>You need to focus.
>You’re not sure what on, but it has to be something, ANYTHING other than that.

>Locate Twilight Sparkle.

>Same answer as before.
>It’s been so long since she was last spotted.
>How do you know she’s still there?

>Contact Admin.

BUSY.

>He’s not accepting messages
>He must have enough stuff ready to work with.
>You’re probably not going to be in contact with him for quite a while.
>You’re on your own then.
>You land in the courtyard feeling somewhat drained.
>You doubt you can handle much more flight today.
>But it’s been a pretty wild ride.
>You’re most definitely glad that experiment worked out.
>Now to find Twilight.
>You spend some time wandering the palace aimlessly.
>For some reason walking is proving to be quite taxing.
>Your good leg seems to be misbehaving somewhat, almost as though it were far smaller than it should be.
>And your eye feels loose.
>You’re not sure how else to describe it.
>Moving around on your mismatched legs, it takes quite a while for you to notice.
>Something’s wrong.
>Something other than your body.
>Not only are you failing to find Twilight.
>You’re failing to find ANYPONY.
>You can hear them.
>You move through the halls trying to find the origins of the sounds
>No matter how close you seem to get, no matter how clearly you can hear their heartbeats, you don’t see anypony.
>They must be avoiding you.
>Maybe with heat vision you could see them around the corners before they could hide?
>You switch modes-
>You’re being followed.
>Trailed by an invisible pony.
>One who appears to be holding a blade of some sort at the ready.
>Waiting to pounce.

>Destroy their sword.

>As soon as you finish the command your left arm swings outward and a loud crack fill the air.
>>
>>29255858
>Your secondary bracer was designed for precision rather than power, and it does an exceptional job of its task.
>The small slug strikes the crossguard and knocks the blade off of the grip.
>Your potential assailant seems unharmed, but very much in shock.

“I don’t suppose you could point me to Twilight Sparkle?”

>They bolt.
>You plant a tranq dart in them and they fall over in mere seconds.
>You go over to the felled pony to start searching them for some hint as to their origin.
>But on your way something catches your eye.
>The blade you shot is now visible.
>And it carries etchings that are strikingly familiar to you.
>You saw these engravings on many of the blades back in the encampment.
>Specifically the ones carried by Luna’s soldiers.
>A leftover from the process used to enchant them.
>But also an identifying mark.
>Did Luna send an assassin to kill you?
>That doesn’t sound right.
>But something’s definitely wrong here.
>Where are all the visible guards?
>Last time you were in Canterlot they were everywhere.
>Why are there invisible soldiers?
>Where is everypony else?
>You need to ask Luna some questions.

>Locate Luna.

>Last seen 7 hours ago…

>Why is this data so old?

>Location data for most individuals is based on visual confirmation. Individuals who can not be seen from above can no be tracked. Exceptions include those who carry tracking equipment.

>Tracking equipment.
>Maybe the rectangles you were using to communicate?

>Locate comms devices.

>One of them is nearby and moving.
>You’ll find either Celestia or Luna there.
>MAYBE Twilight, but you doubt it.
>You set out after them.
>And you soon find yourself in the prison block.
>Why would a princess be in a cell block?
>Who are they seeing?
>Did some dangerous criminal just get caught?
>You finally find a guard at the entrance to the block.
>They duck under their desk the moment they see you, apparently too cowardly to face the metal dragon.
>>
>>29255864
>Not the best guards, them.
>Your enhanced eye almost immediately spots the trapdoor near the back, only partially obscured by straw.
>With no princesses to be seen in the nearly vacant cellblock you take a peek inside.
>And find a hidden staircase leading down below.
>”What-”

>You can hear Twilight barely managing to speak through her sobbing.

>”What would princess Celestia think if she knew what you’re doing?”

>You start running down the stairs at those words.

>”What. Would. She. THINK?”

>You can hear stomping, cracking, screaming.

>And to your surprise, she gallops away in terror.
>She doesn’t stop to thank you, or to ask how you found her, or anything.
>She seemed scared of you.
>Why would Twilight fear you?
>And that’s when you see it.
>Your reflection in the slowly spreading pool of blood.
>Transformed into a larger, gnarled and fanged dragon.
>You can barely recognise your own face.
>Draconic greed.
>Just from THINKING about that money.
>All the lustrous gold...

I couldn’t help but feel silly as I wrote about a rocket powered cyber dragon. It feels like a really campy movie. I’m sticking with it though.

You all understand WHY Spike changed, right? Secret Of My Excess? Did that need explanation? Congrats to the one anon who called it, by the way.

As for the edge? I don’t like writing it. It's just not my thing. That’s part of why this took so long to make. I kept putting it off, and even when I was at it progress was slow. I think I’m more or less done with it for this green though.
Sorry Despair Anon.

Pastebin NOT updated. I'm trying to avoid breaking this thing into 4 parts, but that'll necessitate some shuffling. I don't feel like dealing with that right now.

This thing is way too long.

He was not. He walked in on Luna going on and on about how much fun torture was and saw Twilight bound and mutilated. All with no context.

I should probably call attention to this fact in the next post.

>>29262928
Minor correction. He wasn't actually hit by the meteor. The shockwave and debris are what got him. If a meteor lands on you there won't be anything left to fix.
Though it's still reasonable to assume that cybernetics could reverse this injury, yes. The wounds aren't in the brain. Depending on how severe the wounds are (low power precision weapons possibly avoiding vital organs? Targeting the heart? Or the mach 5 cannon he has on the other arm essentially destroying everything. I didn't specify which) there may not be much flesh left, but the brain could be salvaged as with Celestia. Whether or not this happens or is even necessary, you'll learn soon enough.

It's painful to see them shilling this so much when it's going to inevitably crash and burn. It's happening during the hiatus, there's been declining interest in the fandom, and it's at a more remote location. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see it crash and burn, but I just feel like it inevitably will. At least it's during con season, unlike last year where it happened during a fucking blizzard. >"Hell is a devilish place, but it's a playground compared to the unknown. I know what tortures await me in hell; I do not know what awaits me in the unknown."
-Captain Jorman S. Haymell, "The Fifth Invasion"
-Luna-
>Celestia and Luna sat in one of the castle's smaller dining halls, at a surprisingly small oak dining table that could seat six ponies at maximum. The morning sun shined through the room's lone window, landing on the plain white tablecloth and the slate tile that lined the floor. The wooden chairs they sat on were well worn from centuries of use, and the ponies who sat in them day after day had grown fond of their simple design that favored function over form. The two princesses had lived for millennia together, and their many years of living in much less comfortable conditions taught them to appreciate a simple lifestyle and spartan accommodations. Although they made sure that the public saw them living in luxury, the truth was that they preferred to live their lives much more humbly.
>Their simple yet filling meals also reflected their preference for a humble lifestyle. Celestia was enjoying a hearty bowl of sweetened oatmeal, while Luna was digging into a simple garden salad. Because of their duties as the alicorn rulers of Equestria, their sleep schedules (and mealtimes) were directly opposite one another's. Whereas Celestia was eating her breakfast in preparation for her day, Luna was having dinner right before she slept through the brightest part of the day.
>Luna, however, didn't feel like sleeping much after what she had seen. After the weapon she had found in the dreamscape had fired, she had quickly exited that mind so as to not disturb it any further. Luna woke up from her trance at around five in the morning, and she was still a bit shaken by the encounter.
>"What's wrong, Luna?"
>>
>>29288259
>Luna looked up from the salad she had been poking at with a slight twinge of unease. Being sisters meant that Celestia and Luna could read each other's emotions as easily as they did books. She sighed, unsure of how to say what she had on her mind.
>"'Tia, you know those beings I've found in the dreamscape?"
>Celestia nodded. Luna had told her about the three magicless minds that she had encountered in the dreamscape, and the book she had found in it. Though Luna was rather interested, Celestia was slightly apathetic towards the discovery. Celestia was never too interested in change and preferred tradition and routine, so the news didn't particularly interest her. Luna's news would change that, though.
>"Yes, Luna, the consciousnesses. They're quite notable, from what I've heard of them from you, but they aren't all that important in my opinion. That table was interesting, but I don't see how it's supposed to affect our country. If anything, it's probably a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Probably an alchemist's notes or something."
>"Well...it's more that that, 'Tia. I looked into another one of the minds... and I found a weapon."
>Celestia had just finished her oatmeal, but she didn't get up just yet. Her eyes widened in surprise as the implications of the discovery entered her mind
>"Go on," she pressed as she lowered her spoon into the bowl.
>>
>>29288265
>"The first mind I went into had a bookshelf inside of it. This one had a metal rack in it. I could tell that it was a soldier's from the symbols on much of the items on it. I remember there were several green clothing articles, a couple of boxes, and... the thing that caught my interest was a sort of... here, I'll show you."
>Luna's horn lit up, and a replica of the weapon materialized, floating in the middle of the air. Illusion spells were handy when somepony wanted to show an image of something that was hard to describe, and Luna's experience with magic made the fake weapon all the more convincing. Celestia stared at the black shape, her eyes tracing the outline of the L as Luna rotated it mid-air.
>"Interesting."
>"There's more. From what I've gathered, these creatures are from a country. A well-organized country with a military force that arms itself with weapons like this. It came with a guide on its use, Celestia, and I learned a lot. These creatures have fingers, like Minotaurs. And they have more than one group that manufactures these! Why? But that's not the biggest thing, Celestia. These weapons are unlike anything Equestria has in her arsenal. From what I've seen from the guide, it's apparently a miniature cannon. And it's light, only about one and a half pounds."
>"That's ridiculous! A weapon that light, that's a cannon?"
>>
>>29288273
>"Absolutely! It's a small arm, though. Definitely too small to take down a wall. But from what I've gathered, it can outrange even the most skilled archer. It apparently has a range of one hundred hooflengths, and it can fire once every second! Imagine, Celestia, an entire army with these weapons. One casualty per second, over such a range..."
>"Relax, Luna. If these beings are here to fight, we can easily defend ourselves. Equestrian armor is the best, and I doubt those things can pierce it. Not only that, but didn't you say that those creatures had no magic? They'll have a hard time against unicorn mages in an open battlefield. Go ahead and look into it, though. I'm rather interested in what you might find."
>With that, Celestia stood up and walked out of the room, leaving Luna to her thoughts. She would look in the other mind tonight, that was for sure.
>>
>>29288312
-Rainbow Dash-
>Getting up this early is a crime against proper sleep, Rainbow Dash grumbled as she trotted up to the green door. The heavy saddlebags she carried at her side dug into her back, and the chilly morning air was just cold enough to make her shudder a little as she knocked on the door. The dull grey of the morning sky gave little light, but Dash could still see the various critters that surrounded Fluttershy's cottage. It was surprising that the yellow pony was so good with animals, since earth ponies were the natural-born creature handlers. Perhaps it was her kind and caring nature, which made itself evident in all of her actions and habits. Even the way she carefully and cautiously opened the door displayed her gentle personality. A warm, homely smile spread across her lips as she pulled the door further open and stepped to the side.
>"Oh, hi, Rainbow Dash. Come in, Twilight and Applejack are waiting, they're in the dining room."
>"Thanks, Fluttershy. Is everything ready?"
>"Yep! You should have everything you need, plus enough food for three or four days. Pinkie Pie had fun making her, uh, 'Super Filler Bricks for Hungry Little Fillies'. She told me to tell you that."
>Rainbow Dash set down her saddlebags, then trotted into the dining room. Applejack and Twilight were sitting at the dining table, their saddlebags resting next to the stools that they sat on. A lantern sat in the middle, its candlelight illuminating the myriad assortment of bags, belts, and ropes that were strewn across the table. As she entered the room, Twilight turned her head from the map she was reading and Applejack stopped munching on the toast she had in her hoof.
>>
>>29288331
>"Hey, Rainbow Dash!"
>"Howdy, Dash."
>Rainbow dash took her seat at the end of the table and looked around the table. "So," she asked, "what's the plan?"
>Twilight set down the map on the table and moved it closer to Rainbow Dash. The map was of the Everfree Forest and its surroundings, with several paths and landmarks scattered throughout the trees. The Everfree was about fourty gallops long at its widest and was about five thousand plots in size. Several lines were drawn across it in pencil, and the lines seemed to converged somewhere in the middle of the forest.
>"I've gathered some information from ponies around the forest regarding the source of the noises. Using their reports, I've triangulated the general area that the source of the noises should be in. I had to make do with what ponies have told me, and they weren't very exact about the direction of the booms. Our search area is about four plots, so we have a lot of looking to do. Luckily, it's actually very close to where we are now, so we won't have very far to go. We'll enter here," she said as she pointed at the nearest edge of the Everfree, "and walk straight towards the sound. We're walking through dense forest, so it will probably take us about a half-day to reach the noises. From there, we'll set up camp and search for the source. Hopefully, we can find it. We'll leave after about two days if we haven't, same way we came in. I'll go into further detail once we're inside. Understand, Dash?"
>>
>>29288339
>"Sounds like a load of egghead talk, but whatever you say, Twilight. I trust ya."
>"Great. Now get ready to leave at sunrise, which should be... in about thirty minutes. We don't want to be late, since we want to have as much daylight as possible for us to look around."
>As Twilight and Applejack went back to their preparations, Rainbow Dash grabbed her saddlebags from the living room and began to slide supplies into it. She didn't plan on carrying one of the heavier rucksacks that the others were, since she was a pegasus. If anything dangerous were to happen, she would need to be fast and agile enough to deal with it.
>It was easy to underestimate the dangers of the Everfree.
>>
>>29288346
-Leah-
>Okay, maybe it was a dumb idea to try and take a bite out of the acid monster.
>Leah sighed as the third needle melted inside the hydra's flesh, leaving nothing but a plastic syringe that mildly reeked of a burnt chemical smell. She had been trying to get some samples of the creature's body before the boys decided to blow it all up, but the green liquid that trickled out of its corpse was ruining all her equipment. How the heck does a creature live with acid for blood?
>All the more reason to find out.
>To be honest, she hadn't exactly kept up with her promise of "doing science" since she had arrived. Sure, she did put a couple of plants under a microscope, but she had actually spent most of her free time playing video games like the lazy little girl she was. Besides, biology wasn't her major; physics was, and she didn't exactly remember too much of the former from her high school days. She had little idea what all the organs in the local critters were supposed to do, so how was she supposed to figure out how a monster was supposed to live when its internal fluids were literally caustic?
>Leah sighed, then walked back towards the tent with her plastic container of material sampling equipment in her hands. The mid-morning air was nice and cool, and her green T-shirt fluttered in the windy breeze. The clean forest air, though refreshing, was tainted by the smell of old, sour sweat. Her shirt was beginning to really stink after two (three?) weeks, and she would need to wash it soon.
>>
>>29288354
>Leah didn't bother pulling the door-slab over the entryway, since the guys were still taking demolition equipment outside and preparing to remove a huge chunk out of the hydra corpse. She put down the box on her table next to her laptop and a low-magnification microscope, then opened her laptop. Andrew's table was covered with tens of thick instruction manuals and a large toolbox, and Noah's had little on it but a half-disassembled pistol, several cartridges, and an empty rifle magazine. Leah sat down at her desk, typing the observations that she had made onto her computer. There wasn't much to type out; all she really did was take a few pieces of its outer flesh that had minimal amounts of blood on it and put it in a glass bottle. She did, however, take a video of the creature, showing it off from all angles and examining its insides (or rather, what was left of the insides as observed from the giant holes in its corpse.) The video would probably be the most important part of her recordings, since she couldn't and didn't know how to properly examine the samples that she had managed to recover. She still had about a petabyte of storage available on her computer, so storing the hundred or so megabytes that the high-definition recording took up on her computer wouldn't be an issue.
>"Hey, Leah, what're you doing?"
>"Nothing much, just trying to get some samples from the hydra. What about you?"
>>
>>29288370
>Andrew smiled as Leah turned to face him. He walked past her, his heavy construction boots thunking on the wooden sheets that served as a floor with his every step. He stopped for a moment in front of a pile of boxes to wipe his forehead and dry his brown skin. Sweat rolled off of his black hair and fell to the floor, each drop plopping onto the dusty and dirty floor. Everything about Andrew, from his height and his musculature to his serious brown eyes and stereotypical Mexican stubble, made him look big and threatening to those who didn't know him. A couple of days with him, however, had convinced Leah that he was actually a calm, quiet man who tried his best to keep those around him happy. Leah watched as Andrew pulled the lid off of a small metal box, then took four tiny metal spikes with wires sticking out of one end.
>"That should be all we need. Hey Leah, you should come out of the house. Noah wants you behind proper cover just in case things don't go as well as planned. It probably won't go too bad, but just in case..."
>Leah stood up as Andrew slid the blasting caps into his pocket and walked through the doorframe. She followed him to a pile of dirt about two feet high and ten feet wide, where Noah was already kneading what seemed to be white clay into a cone. There were three of them on the dirt ground, each one only about the size of a Just as she was about to ask about the explosives, Noah noticed her and waved at her to come closer.
>>
>>29288411
>"You're interested in the C-4? I thought you'd run away from it. Don't worry, this definitely won't explode unless one of these little metal rods," he said while wiggling a detonator in the air, "goes off. And that's not happening until we hook it up to the blast control box."
>"I'm not too concerned about what looks like old dough. Why are you shaping it like that, though?"
>"The cone shape lets the blast deliver its explosion precisely and accurately. Our plan right now is to set the charges facing away from the camp to minimize shrapnel - AKA corpse meat. The explosions will just barely blow out almost all of the body's mass, which'll hopefully leave some easily movable pieces of scorched meat that we can shove somewhere else. Andrew did the calculations, don't ask me. Speaking of which - Hey Andrew, I'm done!"
>Andrew set aside a black box with several rows of switches and lights on it jogged towards Noah. He took the four charges from his hand, their combined mass barely larger than his hand.
>"Thanks, Noah. I'll set these onto the hydra. You guys get behind cover and prepare for detonation, I don't want anyone to get hurt."
>As Andrew began to walk towards the corpse, Leah and Noah crouched down behind the mound of dirt. Noah grabbed a nearby ballistics helmet and handed it to Leah, who put it on as he tightened the chin strap. Safety was number one when it came to high explosives, after all.
>>
>>29288422
>Several rapid footsteps came from over the crest, and Andrew soon vaulted over the miniature hill of dirt, landing squarely between Noah and Leah. He then plugged a nearby wire into the switch-covered box, his hands shaking as he did so. A rapid panting pierced the calm of the meadow, which was then accented by a high-pitched drone as Andrew turned the box on. A series of red lights flashed across the top, flickering and flashing for several seconds before they turned off. A single green light labeled "READY" lit up, and Andrew took a moment to compose himself.
>"Okay, okay... Is everything safe, Noah?"
>"Yep. The blast won't damage the house, and he shrapnel should fly towards the forest and away from our base."
>Andrew leaned back into the dirt and let out a deep sigh. "I want you guys to assume the fetal position and cover your ears. And whatever happens, DON'T LIFT YOUR HEAD UP UNTIL I SAY SO. Got that?"
>Leah and Noah nodded, then grabbed their heads and hunched over their legs. Andrew let out a soft sigh, then crossed himself. His Hispanic upbringing had gave him an appreciation for the power of the Holy Trinity, and it had done him him well through his life. Even when he was trillions of miles from home (and probably several dimensions away as well), he had managed to endure with faith and hope.
>With the blessing of the Lord behind his actions, Andrew flipped the "CHANNEL 1" switch.
>>
>>29288428
>A small spark of electricity shot through the wire from the detonation box to each of the four blasting caps. The gram of lead azide in each detonator was then ignited, causing a series of small explosions that would barely make a dent in the hydra body. That wasn't their purpose, though; they were meant to initiate the much more destructive Conposition-C.
>C-4, when put under high amounts of simultaneous heat and pressure, chemically decomposes into a mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and several other gases. These gases then violently expand at a rate of eight kilometers per second, resulting in a large, loud, and undeniably destructive explosion that tends to destroy anything in its path.
>The hydra had died laying on its side, its stomach facing away from the house and towards the Everfree. By about a thousandth of a second after the lead azide had detonated, the primary explosives attached to its belly had completely activated in a thunderous explosion that rang out across the forest. The earth trembled and shook as shockwaves liquidized and pulverized the monster's insides, turning them into an acidic broth of blood and flesh. The soft underside of the three-headed beast was immediately torn open, sending small chunks of scales and muscle flying into the trees.
>The deafening boom that came with the shockwave hit the trio's ears and sent a jolt of shock down their bodies. The echo of the explosion lingered for several seconds, overpowering all other sounds. Then a pittering sound, not unlike rain, edged its way into the surrounding soundscape, followed by a faint bubbling and hissing.
>>
>>29288438
>"Oh, oh shoot...shoot! That isn't good, goddamn it!"
>Andrew was right. Though most of the acidic flesh-mush was thrown harmlessly into the forest, some of it was randomly flung the other way - towards the house. Andrew wanted to rush towards their precious supplies, but he could only sit in regret and wait for the deadly rain to stop falling. What was actually two minutes felt like hours of waiting and wondering what would be damaged by the shower of flesh and acid.
>He patted the shoulders of his friends as the last echoes and patters faded out, signaling that it was safe to get out of cover. Andrew shakily stood up, then nervously crawled up over the mound and looked at the carnage he had unleashed. It was hard to tell exactly how much of the body was remaining, but he knew that not much of it was still in one piece. The explosion had blown acid in a hundred-degree fan, leaving a hazy cloud of white gas and a hissing that could still be heard in the silence that surrounded the forest. Not all of the scorch marks were in that direction, though. Andrew turned his attention to the house and let out a sigh. It was mostly unharmed, even though visible holes could be seen in some parts of the walls.
>"Jesus..."
>>
>>29288449
>"I know, Noah. I know, but we can't let this get to us. We have to just endure whatever nature throws at us. And maybe stop being such idiots while we're at it. Come on, we gotta clean this mess up."
>Andrew turned around and walked towards the house, bracing himself as he inspected the damage. For what was probably the thousandth time in a row, Lady Luck had been on their side. As he approached the house, he discovered that the holes he had seen earlier were just chemical burns, most not even deep enough to penetrate the wood and canvas walls of their shelter. The meat and blood mixture was certainly still caustic, but it was apparently diluted enough to protect their shelter from serious damage. Luckily, the solar panels were stored inside, so nothing was seriously damaged. They would have to be a lot more careful in the future, though. Sooner or later, their luck would ran out.
>Andrew just hoped it would be later rather than sooner.

-Expedition-
>The journey into the Everfree was tougher than Twilight had expected. Even with her expert planning, they were still only two gallops deep in the forest, and it was already midmorning. The dense forest underbrush grew wildly and densely, meaning that Twilight had to brush them aside with each step. At least they didn't need to worry about critters; so far, the only "dangerous" beings that they had encountered were a bunch of insects and a couple of squirrels. The journey into the forest was rather dull, though, and Twilight's hooves were beginning to get tired.
>Though the air was cool and breezy, Twilight still managed to work up a sweat. She looked back at Rainbow Dash and Applejack, who were still fine. They were tougher mares whose lives involved more exercise than Twilight's bookworm personality afforded, and they barely showed any signs of tiring.
>Suddenly, Twilight held her hoof up. They stopped, and the sound of running water could be faintly heard up ahead. All three ponies knew what that meant, and they wordlessly pushed on towards the sound of water. Twilight pulled bush after bush aside, continuing forward until there was no foliage left to pull aside.
>The creek that they had stumbled upon was a small one, with water slowly trickling down its path. The two or three meters to the side were covered with dried leaves and the occasional fallen tree. Using her magic, Twilight pulled out a map and a compass, taking a moment to reorient herself.
>>
>>29288465
>"...If we're here...and that's in the east, then... we should be...aw man, that's bad."
>"What is it, Twilight?" Applejack asked.
>"It's nothing big, we're just a bit behind schedule. Why don't we take a rest here? We can fill up our canteens and maybe eat something. It'll be nice to rest our hooves after such a long walk," Twilight suggested as she stuffed the navigational equipment back in her bags.
>Rainbow Dash was the first to sit down and take her bags off of her back. She flipped open her saddlebag and reached into it, pulling out a surprisingly heavy brick of what looked like condensed fruitcake. Rainbow Dash needed a lot of food to fuel her high metabolism, and the trek into the forest only accelerated it. Still, the bricks were quite filling, and she managed to scarf down only a third of one. The taste was mildly sweet and a little salty, but not bland. She could taste a faint strawberry taste with a little bit of peanut, and the overall taste was pleasant but not overpowering. Applejack and Twilight were also hungry, and they bit into their blocks as well.
>Pinkie sure knew what she was doing with these, Dash thought.
>As Twilight finished filling her belly with the surprisingly calorie-dense food, she stood up and trotted over to the river, canteen in hand. Tasty as they were, Pinkie's food bricks were quite dry and thirst-inducing, and a lot of water was necessary to get the pasty bricks down her throat. She dipped the canteen into the creek, waiting for it to fill with water.
>>
>>29288468
*BOOM*
>Yesterday's explosions sounded like faraway thunder; this one sounded like an enormous explosion. The three ponies immediately turned to the sound of the noise, ears perked up in surprise. Even though they were closer to it than Ponyville, they could tell that it would be much louder. The echo hung around for what seemed like forever afterwards, its persistence only barely dampened by the surrounding trees and foliage. Twilight immediately telekinetically grabbed her compass and map out of her saddlebags again, her head still pointed towards the explosion. She looked at her compass, then back at the noise, then back at her compass, then at her map. A pencil levitated out of her bag's side pocket, and she immediately drew several lines across the map.
>"...what was that, Twi?" Applejack nervously asked.
>"I don't know. But I do know where it is; northeast of us, about 40 degrees. It doesn't sound too far off, either. We should probably rest for a bit longer, though; I want to be prepared for whatever it might be."
>"Whatever it is, I'll beat the tar out-"
>"Don't, Dash. It probably ain't a good idea."
>>
>>29288474
>Twilight sighed as she walked back to the group, taking a swig from her canteen and putting the map back in her bag once again. Dash is just being Dash, she mused. At least she would have some help if whatever made the noise was hostile. She sat down and watched Rainbow Dash read her Daring Do book as the sound of running water calmed her nerves. Applejack had lowered her hat and was peacefully napping the minutes away. The orange pony was surprisingly calm at times, and her nerves almost never got the best of her.
>The three ponies sat there for an hour in uninterrupted peace before Twilight decided that they had rested long enough. They continued on, venturing further into the forest and deeper into the unknown.

This chapter was definitely not one of my better ones. Lotsa stuff happening in my life right now, so I didn't have much time to look over this. I'd prefer to get my chapters out here 2-3 days before I put them up on FimFiction, since you guys are probably more interested than the general public. The C-4 idea was pretty dumb now that I think about it, so I decided to go another way with it.

Anyways, thanks for your support over the past month. Questions, comments, feedback, and criticisms are appreciated as always!

>The C-4 idea was pretty dumb now that I think about it
This chapter was unpleasant for me to read because of that bit. When it was mentioned last time, it sounded dumb, wasteful and reckless from every possible perspective, and reading them doing was just not fun.

>The third marine, having either more competence or lucidity, begins firing his bolter at you from the corridor while steadily being forced forwards by his allies behind him.
>As you duck in just enough time to avoid the first volley of shells, you fully realise the advantage afforded to you by the layout of this area.

And there we go.
That took much longer than it should of to put out, sorry for that, but real life caught up with me in a pretty big way this last week, but now that's done for the moment. Which is nice.

As a reward for your patience, I'm working on a a little side block that I'll try and have out tomorrow. It's an idea that fits into the story but wouldn't make sense to shove in at this point as far as the chonology goes, so it'll be a little bit separated out.

Aside from that, thanks for reading, I hope I didn't botch the show-characters too much and I hope you enjoyed the big action scene. Rye-54 has been a fun character to write and an interesting one for exploring a facet of the admech, so I felt like he deserved a decently exciting ending, since it really couldn't have been a happy one.

I also enjoyed LP's story

http://pastebin.com/JQrFNRxF.

It's incomplete/dead but if you stop right before the year long timeskip happens (line 4726) most of the plot threads are tied up that it works as a sort of ending with post timeskip stuff feeling like a sequel that wasn't finished.

So, I've just been roasted by a random commenter. He makes a lot of valid points, and I can't help but feel a bit stupid now.

My question: Would you guys be upset if I went back and edited some of the first chapter? I know that changing what I've already done is kinda bad (for lack of a better term), but I don't want to leave such glaring flaws in my writing.
>>
>>29318984
If you're up to it I say go ahead. Just don't let it consume you. I've seen to many writefags let a story die because they spent so long rewriting they lost the drive to write their story
>>
>>29318984
I'd go back and try to fix it with a couple of small edits. No more than a couple of lines here and there. Don't introduce new characters, items or plot points. Worst case scenario, have a couple of characters discuss the problems during the scenes and give answers there, but keep it snappy. Assume an existing reader won't go back to see the changes, so keep it consistent.

If you can't fix things without altering the plot, characters, etc. then I think you should ignore the issues and not worry about it, or justify those decisions somehow later on in the story. Going back for a rewrite is a BAD idea. It's better to finish a story that has some plot holes than to not finish a story at all. You can always do better on the next one!
>>
>>29315816
>>>/r/eddit
>>
>>29318984
When writefags go back to fix stuff, they almost invariably wind up abandoning their story. I largely agree with what >>29319497
said with an addendum. If you feel it absolutely must be rewritten, consider alternating. One revision followed by one update. Alternatively you could finish up then go back and rewrite the opening. It depends heavily on you as an individual.
Just be careful not to burn yourself out on fixing past mistakes. That kills stories fast.

Is that crime rate per capita or just overall?
Because if the latter then that only really says that most liberals are in population-dense areas, which is already well known
>>
>>29329511
Its overall. If it was per capita D.C. would be the highest.

Regardless, crime rates and especially violent crime are indeed higher in the cities. Which means Liberal areas. Look up law enforcement statistics if you doubt that.
>>
>>29329523
Oh and also that's not the 2016 electoral map. Maricopa County AZ stayed red which is why the whole state did too (largest red county in the nation by economy and I believe population)

I don't have any green to deliver right now, which I'm pretty bummed out about. Today (or yesterday now, I guess) was the one-year anniversary of my first installment of this convoluted mess of a story. I had planned for a massive dump to celebrate, but life got in the way. I don't know why I'm saying any of this except to maybe offer some sort of an apology. I've just gotta find the time, and things are a bit complicated right now. Nearly ready. Just popping in to quickly ask a favor. I promised to answer some questions and include a few scenes, but it occurs to me I've only recently started keeping track of what I've promised to do. As an example, one of you asked why anon was able to make a neural interface for ponies so easily if their biology is confusing to him and I said I'd address it in fiction. If there's anything else like that please remind me. I'm sure I've forgotten some.

>>29279789
I forgot to say. Persistence is paramount. Most greens die without a proper conclusion, and you can really only improve with experience. If you just keep showing up you'll do way better than most writefags. The main reason why I'm popular is that I keep coming back.

Naa. I just had to add a scene that I was having trouble writing. The bit with Twilight is needed to stitch things together, and in the interest of linear chronology I couldn't wait until later to explain what she's doing. Problem is that no matter what I did it was either cringey or boring. I finally decided to just make it short and get it our of the way. If there's going to be a bad part it can at least be limited to a couple hundred words.

>You are Spike.
>You’re definitely dying.
>Slowly as luck would have it.
>It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why.
>The machinery sustaining you is not magical in nature.
>It’s not undergoing metamorphosis with the rest of you.
>First you were forced to disarm yourself by taking off your bracers.
>Thankfully you were met with very little resistance while leaving the palace.
>Whatever was left of the guard was all too happy to see you leave and felt no need to intervene.
>Next your good leg became largely unusable.
>It was just too short to reach the ground.
>And so you, the most technologically advanced dragon to ever exist, arguably third or even second most powerful being in the world, YOU, the RICHEST thing alive-
>You can feel a ripple go through your body as it grows again.
>You were forced to crawl.
>And when you try to call the visitor, he still isn’t answering.
>Thankfully you just happened to be near hundreds of ponies who will literally do whatever you ask them.
>Getting one to give you a lift to Ponyville proved trivial.

“Thank you again, Lightning Dust.”

>You barely manage to wheeze the words out.
>It’s not just your leg and bracers that are too small.
>And it didn’t stop when your eye nearly fell out of its socket.
>No, it’s far worse than that.

>”Anything for you, my lord. Are you certain Ponyville is the right place? Wouldn’t Olympus be better?”
>>
>>29343072
>Olympus.
>Her name for what you know to be an elevator to space.
>You’re not sure where they got the name.
>But she seems to think it immensely important, even divine in nature.
>It’s entirely possible she named it herself.
>You’ve decided not to tell her that it’s so unremarkable it wasn’t even given a name.
>Very few of his things have names, not proper ones at least.
>Numbers are pretty common.

“The machinery is working fine. The dragon is what’s faulty.”

>Again, your voice is weak and raspy.
>Which is to be expected.
>Your artificial lungs are far too small.
>That’s not what you’re worried about though.
>What scares you is the synthetic materials stitching your perforated heart together.
>You need to do something before your heart grows.
>Or your brain for that matter.
>Though you don’t recall being that bright last time.
>Perhaps that one isn’t a real concern.

>”They know how to fix dragons in Ponyville?”

“It’s not that the dragon is broken. It’s that dragons are inherently flawed. And there’s no cure for being a dragon. Not yet, anyway.”

>Low priority task. Find some way to stop obsessing over gold.

ADDED TO LIST: LOW PRIORITY.

>You find it rather sad that finding some way to not go berserk whenever you see something shiny is a low priority task.
>But here you are.
>Faced with so many problems that mind melting avarice that threatens your very life barely qualifies as a nuisance.
>Because you don’t believe him.

>”We’re nearly there.”

>The worry in her voice is plainly evident.
>It occurs to you that you’ve not told her you’ll survive.
>You didn’t mean to worry the poor girl, you were just distracted.

“I’ll be fine. Dragons… we change when we have too much wealth. I’m about to spend everything I have on something important. I’ll be back to normal by nightfall. Tomorrow morning at the latest.”
>>
>>29343080
>It hurts to think about giving away your hoard.
>But it has to be done.
>You must surrender the largest hoard in history.
>Another ripple goes through your body.
>You can feel your progress slow to a crawl.
>Checking the satellite feed from above you can see why.
>A hideous malformed wreck of a dragon lay face up in a wagon being pulled by a relatively small pegasus.
>Some parts have grown freely swelling to well over triple their original size.
>Others, presumably those that are artifical, have stayed in their original shape.
>You’ve several gaping tears at the seams between your natural and artificial flesh.
>To your surprise they don’t seem to be hurting or even bleeding.
>Perhaps some form of automatic first aid?
>You wish you understood your own body better.
>But there’s no time for that.
>Because he’s bluffing.
>The Visitor’s confidence in the face of the Titans is a lie.

“Hold on. Dragons have flight magic too. Just-”

>You focus on the yearning to move.
>It’s proving much less taxing than before now that you have some actual experience.
>You lose weight and Lightning dust is once again able to move at a decent rate.
>It doesn’t take long at all before you reach the palace.

>”I’ll go right in and-”

“The entire building is rigged with traps. I know the layout. Stay out.”

>You ignore her objections as you drag yourself out of the wagon with your right claw.
>Your left stays firmly attached to your face holding your eye in its socket.
>Much to your amazement you make relatively good progress through the palace.
>The strength of a mighty dragon is more than enough to scramble through the corridors even with but one claw.
>It’s not until you reach the stairs that you have a problem.

“Twilight?”

>You try to call out for her.
>But your raspy voice barely carries at all.
>There’s no way you’ll reach her if she’s upstairs though.

>Locate Twilight Sparkle.
>>
>>29343085
>Right behind you.
>You turn to look at empty space.
>Moving your claw aside slightly, your good eye spots a single hair slowly falling to the ground in a nearby doorway.
>She’s hiding behind the door.

“Twilight, it’s me. Spike. I need your help.”

>You start dragging yourself towards the doorway.
>You’re going much more slowly than you could in an attempt to not startle her.

“I need an accountant!”

>She jumps out from her hiding place with a woodcutting axe held high.
>She stares down at you with a wicked grin.
>And in that brief moment before she brings it down on your head you see it.
>A mad gleam in her eye.
>A sick excitement at the prospect of doing violence.
>And the discolouration of her fur that you’d chalked up to being wet and dirty remains.
>This isn’t the Twilight you know.

EMERGENCY OVERRIDE

>Without your input your left claw shoots out and grabs the axe mid-swing.
>Your good eye stays in its socket through means unknown.
>You quickly close your eyelid so as not to tempt fate as you sink the axe deep into the floorboards.
>Again without trying to do so.

“Please just listen.”

>She runs away.
>You’ve a lot to go over.
>Worry about her condition.
>Wonder at what happened.
>Sorrow for her actions.
>But the clock is ticking.
>You need results now, emotion can come later.
>And so you scurry out of the palace.

“Plan B. There’s a place called Carousel Boutique about half a kilometer west of here. Please hurry.”

>You drag yourself into Lightning Dust’s wagon and she takes off at a sprint.
>You’re duly impressed by the haste with which she reaches the boutique.
>Even after moving you from Canterlot to Ponyville in less than half a day on hoof, she has stamina to spare.

“Could you do one more thing for me? I don’t want her to see me like this. Go get something for me to hide behind.”

>”SPIKE!?”

>So much for that.
>>
>>29343095
>”What happened to you? Did Twilight do this to you?”

“Thank you, Lightning. I won’t forget this.”

>You scamper into the boutique and hide behind a dressing screen.

>”You’re bleeding!”

>You hadn’t even noticed.
>But sure enough she’s right.
>One of the seams between your natural flesh and the synthetic has finally torn.
>Best not waste any time.

”Rarity. I need your help.”

>”We need to get you to a doctor! But I don’t know if they can work with dragons, we need to get you to a vet!”

>You can’t help but feel a little insulted even though she means well.

“No, no. That’s not what I’m here for. We need to talk business. I trust you, Rarity. We’ll work out the details later. I’ve come into some money lately-”

>A surge of pain wracks through your body.

INTERNAL BLEEDING DETECTED
VITAL SIGNS ARE DROPPING
AUTOMATIC MEDICAL SYSTEMS ENGAGED
DISTRESS BEACON ACTIVATED

>Distress beacon?
>So help is on its way whenever you get seriously wounded.
>That’s good to know.

“And I’m giving it to you. It’s all yours.”

>Aches you didn’t know you had start to fade.
>Pain that you’d totally failed to notice eases.

>Cancel Distress signal. I’m fine.

ACCESS DENIED.

>He’s wasting his time on you.
>But there’s not much you can do.
>Rarity knocks the dress screen aside much to your dismay.

>”This isn’t the time for that, we need to get you help!”

”This is exactly the time for that! I am now broke. Destitute. It’s all yours.”

>Physically you feel much better.
>But emotionally you’re so very empty.

“Some things are more important than money. Ugh. I feel sick just saying that.”

>”You’re shrinking?”

“Yeah. I’m a dragon who had a lot of gold. Things got weird fast.”

“Really weird. I just wish I could have seen it. But it’s yours now. YOURS.”

“Ugh. I need to go see her. See what’s happening. But time is a factor here.”

>You try to stand up.
>And you succeed with minimal effort.
>One leg is still too short, but everything seems to be tied together well enough.
>Whatever that was that you were injected with it works fast.

>Check treatment logs for Spike the dragon.

>Nanoscale machines to physically repair the breakage?
>Interesting.

>”Are you certain you’re well?”

“Yeah. Just easily distracted.”

>You walk out to the doorway claim your bracers from Lightning’s wagon.

“Feeling fine. Thanks again for the ride!”

>She gives you a peculiar salute before flying off with her wagon in tow.

“Friendly mare, that one. Maybe a bit on the odd side of things though. Can we talk for a bit?”

>She guides you to the kitchen, taking great care to not step on the thin trail of blood you’d tracked in.

“I’ll clean that up later. Sorry.”
>>
>>29343108
>”It’s quite alright, but I expect you to tell me what’s going on. I’m worried about you, Spike.”

>She guides you to the table and gestures for you to seat yourself.
>You’re still a bit larger than you should be, but you fit well enough.
>Rarity levitates a small tray of chocolates out of one of her cupboards and brings it to you.

>”Eat. You’ve lost blood, so you must eat. I know they normally give you biscuits when you give blood, but I’m afraid I haven’t any.”

>She’s overreacting.
>It was a thin trickle.
>You’re most certainly not low on blood.
>But it’s free chocolate!
>You eagerly claim one of the offered treats and pop it in your mouth.
>And you’re quickly shocked to find it’s quite bitter.
>You chew and pretend to enjoy it.

>”Yes, they’re quite a delight, aren’t they? 90% cocoa dark chocolates with a hint of espresso.”

>Leave it to Rarity to ruin something like chocolate by making it too fancy.
>She offers another.
>You accept much less eagerly than before.

>”Now. Tell me what happened.”

>Where to start.
>You don’t know how filled in she is on all the details.
>So you’d better go way back.

“A few months ago a strange biped showed up in the badlands. It was identified as an extinct species of ape that was renowned for their trickery and cruelty.”

>You’re pretty sure she knows that.
>But she doesn’t interrupt.
>>
>>29343114
“It is written into Equestrian law that that species of ape is to be put to death if found in Equestria. Whether that was justified I don’t know. It’s hard to find out just how bad they were. Most of the the records about them have been destroyed, and the only two ponies who were there to see it don’t like to talk about it. Maybe they don’t remember the details too well. It has been a very long time. Or maybe they just don’t want to remember. What is known is that they’re exceptional warriors who conquered nations and wiped out numerous species despite their weak magic. Celestia and Luna were scared of this creature. And so their combined military forces along with a division from the Crystal Empire were sent to the badlands to wipe them out. Those apes breed fast, and even a small tribe could have become a huge threat in just a few years.”

>”Sorry. You said the records had been destroyed?”

“Celestia wanted them to be forgotten because reality wasn’t compatible with the society she wanted to make.”

>Rarity spends some time rubbing her chin as though in thought.
>You allow her to finish up before continuing just in case she has a question.
>Which proves to be the case.

>”What else in Equestrian history has been altered?”

“I don’t know. I don’t think even Celestia knows anymore. But I think the peaceful world we know is a pretty new.”

>”I suppose that shouldn’t come as such a shock. I know things used to be worse. And we keep seeing terrors from the past resurface. Discord. Tirek. And if the rumors are true, Titan. And yet it’s hard to imagine a time in which conflict was the norm.”

>And it’s going to be the norm again.
>This time however you fight not with flame and spear.
>But with annihilator missiles and doomsday spells.
>>
>>29343121
“When their forces arrived, the joint army was the largest single fighting force Equestria had ever mustered. There was some difficulty with the command structure and logistics but for the most part they worked well together. They were ready to fight the apes. But they weren’t ready to fight Him. A single biped that looks stunningly like the apes of old. The difference is his limbs are slimmer and longer, his torso is taller, his eyes smaller, and his forehead much much larger. He looked like a different breed of ape. Soon enough they were calling him an Alicorn Ape. And for good reason.”

>”Yes, I remember what he looked like. He was FAR stronger than I would have expected from those tiny little limbs. At a glance you’d think he’d have trouble walking, much less fighting. And yet he sent poor Fluttershy flying with a single blow.”

“He’s plenty strong enough to fight the normal way, but he’d have still been unbeatable if he was as weak as he looked. He fights with his mind, not his body. And he’s very good at it. When the joint army came all the unicorns got together to make a shield to block arrows. They wanted to charge him and use shock and awe to catch the apes off guard before they were ready for a fight. Celestia led the charge. Whether it was bravery or hatred that led her to be the first on the battlefield, I don’t know. Whatever it was somepony got very lucky. Her choice to lead the charge saved their life.”

>Rarity perks up at this.
>It seems as though she didn’t know this part of the story.

“The visitor had built a cannon that could aim and fire itself. It didn’t need an operator to shoot. And it was powerful enough to shatter the unicorn’s shield and fell Celestia with a single shot. Everypony retreated in a panic, except Luna got wounded while dragging her sister to safety.”

>”What kind of weapon could break a shield like that and still hit hard enough to hurt the princess?”
>>
>>29343126
“A crude one made by somebody with no military history and limited resources. Luckily he let them retreat. He wasn’t looking for a fight, and he was too busy. What followed will probably be remembered as one of the most humiliating chapters in Equestrian history. He just continued about his business and ignored the army at his doorstep. They weren’t worth fighting as far as he was concerned. He just kept on building more and more machines while the army scratched their heads trying to find some way to get at him. They got a couple of trivial victories in, but before long nothing they tried got anything done. Eventually they were forced to admit they’d been beaten. Not by a hoard of ancient monsters, nor a tribe of warrior bipeds. But by a single being. One who had no magic whatsoever. Not even the cantrips or ritual spells the apes used so long ago. Not even Discord could get at him anymore. But Celestia had a trump card. A dark magic ritual.”

>Rarity shakes her head slowly and sadly.
>She knew about that from when she was called in to use the elements.
>But she’s not happy about it.

“She kept using more and more of it, soon seeking out any excuse she could find. Luna cut off her own horn because she was scared she’d go down the same path.”

>Rarity winces at that.

>”Yet all throughout Celestia’s assault the visitor refused to kill anypony. He didn’t hold back against Discord, you’d have to ask him why. But the ponies? No matter how hard they hit him, he wouldn’t hit back. He was so patient with us that once he was done blowing the Titan apart, he started stitching us back together.”
>>
>>29343132
>She closes her eyes and spends a moment breathing deeply.
>She slowly and solemnly nods.

>”So the rumors were true. He killed a Titan.”

>It probably escaped, but that detail can wait for later.

“With power like that he could have gotten revenge with basically no effort. But he didn’t. He healed us. He put me back together after Celestia killed me.”

>”And you’re still CERTAIN that was Celestia?”

“It was an accident. I’m not upset about it. I’m better off for it, really. Plus I got to meet the creature that was causing all this panic. He didn’t want blood. He didn’t want to fight. He just wanted to go home. He’s from another world, and he’s all alone here.”

>”Another world?”

“Another world. No matter which direction you go, nor how far you walk, you’d never reach it. No pegasus can fly high enough. It’s billions of times further away than the moon. He didn’t know this world was occupied when he came here.”

>You leave her to think that over for a little bit.
>It can’t be hard to accept all this at once.
>The other world thing alone is amazing enough.

>”I suppose that’d make sense. You’d have to be from another world to think that the ugly place he made looked good.”

>Of course.

“He was supposed to prepare this world for colonization or study. Since it’s occupied, what should have happened is we should have been observed from afar and experimented on. Apparently they’ve never had a chance to study a society from another world, so it’s illegal to interfere with an inhabited world except in self defence.”

>”But you’re alive.”

“Yes.”

>”And Granny Smith.”

“And Celestia. And thousands more. He’s a criminal because he pitied us. He can never go home. He’s stuck here.”
>>
>>29343135
>”I wish there were something we could do for him. To show him he’s appreciated.”

“There is. Kinda. That’s why I came by, actually. He finds the world he’s stuck on to be extremely depressing. There are all sorts of problems around here that we’re so used to we don’t even see them as problems. Where he comes from boredom is the biggest problem, so looking around here and seeing us getting sick or going hungry or dying, it must be quite a shock. He’s asked me to fix this world up for him, and I intend to do so.”

>”Why is he not doing it himself?”

“He’s expecting the Titans to return for revenge and he wants to be ready. They’re not lightweights even for his weapons. He’s too busy to help us any further.”

>”So nopony else will be mended by his hoof?”

“Maybe a few here and there, but we’re basically cut off. You think that’s unlucky, but you’re looking at this the wrong way. We got so incredibly lucky that he came here in the first place. Of all the worlds in existence he came to ours. Of all the creatures that could have shown up here, we got one who was both powerful and generous. He’s given me access to nearly all the knowledge that he has, and given me a few suggestions on what we should try to fix. He’s given us the tools we need, we just need to use them. But I can’t do it alone, Rarity. I wish to make a deal with you.”

>”I’m sorry, but this is just all so much to take in.”

“And we’re not even done yet. As you may remember I was rambling on about gold a bit earlier. I said I was giving it to you. You see, I was given a stipend to do all this.”

>”How much?”

>How much gold is in the vault?
>>
>>29343138
>The network tells you.
>You awaken a few minutes later in a daze.
>Laying on the ground.
>Drooling.
>Rarity’s shaking you frantically.

“Yeah. I’m back. I- don’t make me think about the gold, PLEASE. It’s sorta what dragons live for.”

>You push her away and climb back up onto the chair, sheepishly hiding your erection.
“Look, there’s enough there that you, as the owner, don’t need to work here anymore. You can safely walk away from fashion and become my full time assistant. Even if you funded all my projects out of your own pocket.”

>”Are you CERTAIN you’re okay? You just passed out!”

“YES! Come on, focus. Will you be my assistant?”

>She takes a bit of time to consider, shifting her eyes back and forth.
>She even stops to grind her teeth for a bit.

>”I don’t think I can do that for you. I’m sorry, Spike. But I don’t do this for money. This is about art for me. Can’t you get somepony else?”

“No. It has to be you. Somepony other than me needs to hold the purse strings. You’re generosity. I can trust you with it. Not only that, you’re business savvy. Pinkie’s too much of a goofball, Dash would get bored too soon, Applejack’s solution to everything is to work harder, Fluttershy is terrible at negotiating and haggling, Twi- err, sorry. She’s acting wrong. I’d love to wait for her to be better, but time isn’t on our side. Ponies are aging. They’re getting sick. They’re dying. I don’t have time to worry about her. I need to trust that she’ll be okay, I need to move on. And you’re the only one I have that I can trust with this. Will you do it?”

>She spends some time thinking it over.
>You can tell she’s torn on this.
>Maybe you need to drive home just how important your work is.
>>
>>29343132
>”Yet all throughout Celestia’s assault the visitor refused to kill anypony. He didn’t hold back against Discord, you’d have to ask him why. But the ponies? No matter how hard they hit him, he wouldn’t hit back.
I still hate this "Ponies are so cute I can't hurt them, but fuck everything else." shit.
>>
>>29343143
>”I don’t know, Spike. Walking away from my life, from my craft. I’ve worked far too long and hard to get where I am now. I can’t just abandon it.”

“I’m not asking you to do it for free.”

>”Oh, you intend to pay me, do you? I thought you’d already given me all your gold.”

>She’s smirking at you.
>Is she teasing you?
>You’ve always had trouble reading Rarity.
>Whatever the case may be, you do intend to reward her.

“I want you to imagine something. You’ve been working hard for days now trying to get everything arranged perfectly. Guests, catering, music. It’s Sweetie Belle’s birthday. She descends the stairs in a magnificent gown you prepared for the occasion. She’s greeted warmly by her friends, and perhaps suitors or even a spouse. She’s grown into a fine young mare, the picture of youthful beauty. Yet she also carries herself with the sophistication and poise of an older mare who’s been in high society for many years.”

>She seems to be following you.
>The gentle smile on her face suggests she wants all this to happen some day.
>Time to blow her mind.

“Once the guests have all departed and the festivities concluded, once everything’s cleaned up... Once the day’s finally over you give Sweetie Belle a tight hug and say...”

>Pause for effect.

“Happy thousandth birthday, Sweetie Belle.”

>”Thousand?”

“I can’t promise you that will happen. But that is one of my goals. Age can be beaten, Rarity. I know why ponies get old. It doesn’t have to be this way. I don’t know if I’m smart enough to do it, but it CAN be done.”

>”You’re serious. I- you mean it, don’t you?”
>>
>>29343153
“There are multiple causes of aging, but most of them boil down to the most basic building blocks of life getting damaged or changing over time. If we were to make it so that they could repair themselves indefinitely, or even just slow the rate at which they fell apart? We’d all live much longer. A million years, a billion, who knows how long we could last? I say a thousand because we already know for sure that a pony can live that long, at least the alicorns can. Why should anypony else be different? And if it really IS just alicorns, why can’t everypony be an alicorn? I believe we are morally obligated to try.”

>”Agreed. I just need to see this gold for myself, then we can get started.”

>You really miss being rich.
>You rub your forehead in frustration.

“Please stop talking about the gold. You aren’t going to ask for time to think? I’m asking you to abandon your career and devote yourself to rebuilding the whole world without even knowing what my goals are.”

>”I know one of your goals. It alone is worthwhile. But if you insist I suppose you can tell me some of the others.”

“We’ll need to start a research firm and get scholars on staff. My first goal is to find a way to cripple a magic user. That- that came out wrong. You know that the visitor has beaten a Titan. This is a very misleading half truth, Rarity. That was a baby Titan, and odds are he didn’t even kill it. We’re pretty sure it teleported away. Two more attacked recently. They definitely escaped, but not before wiping out nearly everything he had. They WILL be back.”

>You now know that’s it’s possible for Rarity to go pale.

>”That terrifying wave of magic, that beast that drained me twice. All those incredible bursts of power that I felt from so far away. That was a baby?”
>>
>>29343157
“Yes. The adults have much more power. The extra suns in the sky are what they left behind when they fled. THAT-”

>You gesture towards them even though they’re obscured by the ceiling.

“Is the power they left behind. What if more than two come next time? He says he can protect us. He claims that he’s not scared. He’s lying. He melted his own cannons in that fight by turning off their safety features because he NEEDED more power. That’s a desperation move. The truth is that he doesn’t know if he can beat them. If you talk to him for more than a few minutes you’ll find that he barely even believes magic exists. He doesn’t understand it and he struggles to keep it in mind when making plans. We can’t count on him to reliably outdo the most magical things ever. But if we found some way to interfere with spells? They’d lose the only thing they have going for them. I want the best magical scholars working on it. Anything they can come up with, anything at all that can interfere with a spell. Everyone we can get that can work with magic should be devoted to that. Everyone that doesn’t understand magic will be set to other projects.”

>”I- we need to get started! Where is this gold?”

“Stop talking about the gold!”

>”Are you sure there’s enough? We’ll need a lot if we’re going to hire archmages!”

“There’s plenty.”

>”I need to see it.”

“Why? There’s lots. Let’s just leave it at that. The sooner I put it out of mind the better.”

>”Because I need to know if it’s actually a lot of if you just think it’s a lot! You’ve never had to manage your own finances, Spike! If I gave Sweetie Belle a thousand bits she’d probably think she was rich, but that disappears very quickly when you’ve bills to pay! We’re doing this no matter how much you have-”

“How much YOU have. I’m broke. Don’t you DARE give it back to me.”
>>
>>29343162
>Honestly.
>How many times do you have to ask her to shut up about it?

>”Our budget matters greatly. I need to know what we have.”

>You’re satisfied with that answer.
>The simple solution would be to just tell her.
>But you’re not sure how you’ll react to saying the words.
>And as trusting as she’s been so far, it’s plausible she wouldn’t believe you.
>You barely believe it yourself.

>Is that vehicle ready?

HERMES-1: RECHARGING

>Display Hermes-1 specs

>You’ve been in that thing before.
>Just recently in fact.
>It took you offworld.
>And it’s yours to command.
>You tell it to come by once it’s ready.

“It’s in Canterlot. I’ll call in a ride for you. Are you okay with going alone? I’ve got somepony I want to talk to. Besides, I should probably keep my distance.”

>”Why yes, of course! When will my ride arrive?”

>She might change her tune after being in that thing.
>But you REALLY need to go check on Twilight.
>From a safe distance.
>Every time you get a chance.
>Who knows when you’ll have time next?
>And maybe you should apologise to Luna once she recovers, because clearly you missed something big.
>Even though you went out of your way to not hit anything vital you were still pretty hard on her.
>That can wait for later though.
>You quickly check the vehicle’s flight plan.

“It’ll be here in about ten minutes.”

>”Let me grab a few things. Oh, and Spike? I wanted to say something. I know there’s a lot riding on this. I know you have a stake in this too, but I’m still very proud of you. No matter how much gold it is, it’s clearly a lot to you. I understand how hard it must have been to give it up, and I’m very proud of you.”

“If you knew how hard it was you’d STOP TALKING ABOUT IT.”

>She flinches when you finish growling out the words.
>You aren’t apologizing though.
>>
>>29343166
“I don’t see this as an expense though. It’s an investment. Dragons aren’t exactly into gold itself, we like wealth. Things of great value. What makes things precious?”

>”High demand and low availability.”

>No hesitation.
>The answer was at the tip of her tongue.

“And what drives demand?”

>Again she speaks without pausing.
>You’d expect nothing less from a self made mare.

>“Plenty of things, but status symbols, branding, and beauty are most important. So the ultimate treasure is something that’s beautiful, widely renowned or even famous. It has to be unique and irreplaceable.”

“Yesss.”

>You can’t keep the desire out of your voice.

“The ultimate treasure is revered around the world. Something big like, say… the wielder of an element of harmony? It has to be gorgeous, and it has to be uncommon- a rarity if you will. There has to be only one of it, and no way to make more. You’re the ultimate treasure Rarity. I can’t have you dying on me, because you’re MINE.”

>A blush starts to grow on her face.
>You walk away without another word.
>>
>>29343171
>Time to face Twilight.
>You’re not looking forward to this.
>You’re scared.
>Not by the axe.
>You’re a DRAGON, it’d take way more than an axe to get through your scales.
>You’re scared of what you’re going to find.
>Or rather, who you’ll find.
>She’s clearly not herself.
>Could it really be?
>Could Twilight Sparkle really be a dark alicorn?
>Your worry grows as you approach the palace.
>And your pace slows.
>You don’t want to go there.
>You need to, but you don’t want to.

HERMES-1 HAS ARRIVED

>You step out of the roadway and lean against a wall.
>Using the brain stuff is really distracting.
>You don’t want to walk into something while you’re doing it.
>After a brief conversation telling Rarity where to go, you proceed on your way.
>Your reluctant pace drags out the trip much longer than it should take.
>But eventually you draw close enough to hear.

>”Which brings us to today!”

>It’s Twilight.
>Speaking loudly and clearly.

>”The apes are known for their deceit and cruelty! And now we are asked to trust one?”

>As you approach the palace you see a small crowd has gathered around.
>Twilight is standing upon the balcony and speaking down to the masses.
>Her coat is still too dark.

>”Before she died in battle, Princess Celestia told me she’d been fooled by the beasts before. She once allowed them to live in Equestria as none others would have them! And for her kindness, pony kind paid a terrible toll. We won’t make the same mistake! Apes MUST die!”

>They’re cheering.
>Most of them, at least.
>Others are starting to back out.
>With your good eye you can spot surgery scars on many of them.

>”And what do we make of the infiltrators? The machines that even now walk among us? They SAY he brought the dead back! They SAY he’s done the IMPOSSIBLE! We will NOT be fooled!”

>You start to back away too.
>>
>>29343174
>”Even now this ROT has spread through Equestria. The so called princess Luna has done NOTHING to stem the tide. She’s even invited it in! Luna is UNFIT to rule! Which is why I invite you, ALL of you, to join me. We will purge the rot! We will DESTROY the forces that turn us against each other! And we will unite Equestria once more! We will march NOT under the banner of the sun, nor the traitorous moon. We will march under a new banner! One that represents purity of form!”

>Unless you’re mistaken, Twilight just declared war on Equestria.
>And the visitor.
>And everypony who’s part machine.
>And…
>And Twilight Sparkle has declared war on you.

>Add task: find a new home.

>A tear falls from your bad eye as you make the command.
>>
>>29343177
>Now you’re Rarity.
>When Spike left you were more or less frozen.
>Stuck with your thoughts.
>After getting over his parting words you pushed your mind back to business.
>Everything he said was so outlandish and fanciful.
>Yet you’re compelled to believe him.
>Everything he said fit what you knew so perfectly.
>And he didn’t seem to know what you’d been filled in on.
>Truth was you already knew nearly everything.
>Twilight, may her mane grey early, had kept in correspondence during her time on the front.
>Some details had been lost of course.
>You had no idea how outmatched Equestria was.
>You’d heard that princess Celestia was wounded early on, but not that it only took a single blow to fell her.
>Nor had you heard that the attack was delivered autonomously even so early on.
>You owe that creature.
>Ponykind as a whole is in its debt.
>If what it wants of ponykind is for it to help itself, how could you say no?
>You’re not certain you understand what Spike has in mind for the aging issue, but a magical research institute seems straightforward enough.
>Sure, you hardly know anything about magic.
>But how hard could it honestly be?
>You just need to secure talent.
>And what you know of these ponies is that they want to study magic anyway.
>It won’t take much pushing to get them to work.
>Surely they’ll help once you tell them what’s at stake.
>Hopefully for free.
>No matter how many bits Spike managed to scrape together you’re certain you’ll run out soon enough.
>Even if he should have amassed a real fortune, a million bits can disappear quite quickly.
>But you can’t imagine how Spike would have gotten even one percent of that.
>The future of this project looks bleak.
>But as Spike said, you are morally obligated to try.
>You pull the straps of your saddlebags tight and step outside waiting for your ride to arrive.
>>
>>29343181
>You idly wonder where Spike managed to find a wagon service in such short order.
>Come to think of it, how did he call for them?
>And how did he know how long it would take for them to arrive?
>You can hear a faint humming in the distance tickling your ears.
>It’s a strange noise, far too high pitched to be a pony humming.
>And now it’s far too loud.
>The sound quickly resolves itself into a horrific shrieking noise and soon enough you’re caught up in the midst of a horrific wind.
>You make no effort to hide your fear as the gale overwhelms you.
>You back away from the source and attempt to shield the eyes from all the dust>
>Then suddenly the winds die out.
>Before you sits a massive metal bird much like the one you were sent out to investigate so many days ago.
>Except its side has fallen open to reveal a largely empty chamber.

>”Is this thing on?”

>A deep soothing voice comes from inside the chamber.
>It’s the perfect tone and tempo to instill calmness in your fearful heart.
>Even despite its distinctly unnatural sound you can’t help but be drawn to it.

”Yes?”

>”Great. Spike here. Climb in and strap yourself to the seats. Try to stay calm this thing moves very fast. When you arrive go into the house you’re dropped at, go into the washroom and place your hoof against the far wall. I gotta go.”

>You don’t move.
>Whatever this thing is you don’t trust it.
>How could it be Spike if he’s not here?
>It doesn’t even sound like Spike.
>No.
>You decide it would be better to slowly back away.

>”Ugh. This doesn’t sound like me, does it? Okay, I’m telling this machine what to tell you. It’s really me though. You sort your bolts of cloth based on texture instead of colour. Lace is the leftmost and wool the rightmost. You’ve never found a place to fit the satin. I really gotta go.”

>It’s either Sweetie Belle or Spike.
>And Sweetie isn’t half machine last time you checked.
>>
>>29343185
>You swallow unconsciously as you slowly and hesitantly board the metal bird.
>You climb on the bench seat.
>A series of straps shoot out from seemingly nowhere and bind you tightly.
>You can feel yourself being pushed into the back of the seat.
>Your struggling and undignified noises accomplish nothing.
>You feel so very heavy as the craft accelerates.
>Before long your vision starts to fade.
>Then suddenly the pressure stops.
>Everything feels totally normal.
>You’re just sitting in a dimly lit box.
>A couple minutes pass before you feel a sudden lurch.
>The straps recede and the side falls open.
>Whatever that was the ride is over.
>And you’re alive.
>It all happened so fast that you’re not sure what to make of it.
>You take a moment to compose yourself before moving.
>To your dismay it seems the struggle and winds have completely ruined your mane, it’ll take hours to get it back into shape.
>You step out with your subpar mane and survey the lands.
>To your amazement you’re in Canterlot.
>The entire trip can’t have taken more than five minutes.
>You doubt even Rainbow Dash could keep up with that thing.
>One thing’s for certain though.
>Ponies weren’t meant to travel like that.
>You steel yourself and press onward into the building.
>A small crowd of ponies has started gathering near you.
>You’d like to be done here before they become a proper crowd.
>When you place your hoof against the wall in the washroom, the wall falls to reveal a largely empty chamber.
>In the middle of it is a large metal disc.

“No gold.”

>You start to survey the room trying to see if you’re missing something hidden.
>A trap door or hidden latch.
>The moment you step on the metal disc though it starts to fall.
>You grab up at the ledge to try and pull yourself back up, but you’re not strong enough.
>You fight and pull for as long as you can.
>It proves to be a brief struggle.
>Then you fall.
>Not far, the metal disc waited for you.
>>
>>29343191
>It waited to carry you deeper and deeper underground.

“Spike?”

>You call out hoping for help.

“Somepony? Anypony? Twilight? HELP!”

>The word echoes throughout.
>There’s no response.
>The only sound is the metal disc hissing as it settles down at the bottom level.
>You’re stuck down here.
>The only way forward that you can find is a giant door made out of heavy metal.
>Massive amounts of unpainted metal are the ape’s style.

>”USER IDENTIFIED: RARITY”

>The door splits in half and separates.
>Three more layers of doors fall aside.
>And before you lies a dark chamber.
>You cautiously step in-
>The doors slam shut behind you.

>”So you’re Rarity.”

>The same deep soothing voice from before.

“Spike?”

>A light turns on and you find yourself surrounded by cannons.
>Each and every one pointed straight at you.
>Behind you you find the unbreakable doors.
>Before you lies what appears to be another set.
>You’re well and thoroughly trapped once more.

>”He goes on and on about you. Personally I don’t get why.”

>Not Spike.
>You’ve definitely been tricked.
>That metal bird was a trap, and you fell for it like a foal.

>”Regardless, it would be inconvenient were something to happen to you. Doubtlessly it would slow his work, doubly so if you are to be his assistant and accountant. I can’t have you dying on me.”

>There’s a sharp prick in the back of your neck.
>All the cannons recede into the wall.

>”I’ll be keeping tabs on your health from now on. Try to keep healthy, I don’t want to waste a lot of time on you.”

>Something snaps.
>Somehow your irritation grows greater than your fear.

“Now hold on! I’ve been thrown through the sky, dropped into a deep pit, threatened with cannons, and stabbed in the back of the neck! All without really knowing what’s going on! I’ll not be treated in such a manner for a moment longer. I demand answers!”
>>
>>29343196
>”Ugh. Okay, fine. You know me as the ape. I’m talking to you remotely.
The cannons are a security measure and weren’t meant to be a threat. The poke in the neck was me implanting a device to warn me if you stop breathing or if your heart rate leaves a safe range.”

“You did what? I don’t believe I gave you my permission to put anything in my body!”

>”Look, my time is valuable. I can’t sit around and listen to your nagging. Take it up with Spike. Oh, but first-”

>Another sharp prick in your neck.
>With the cannons gone you’ve no clue where it came from.

>”Best do something about that brain aneurysm. Your blood pressure’s way too high, it could rupture at any moment.”

“Aneurysm? What aneurysm?”

>Silence.

“Hold on, I’m not done with you! You still owe me an explanation!”

>Silence.

“Well, I never! The nerve of some monkeys. At least tell me what an aneurysm is!”

>Silence.
>Your tried and true approach to being held captive has failed you utterly.
>He’s just ignoring you.
>No amount of whining will set you free.
>You need to find some other way to get out.
>So you start exploring the empty room.
>Again.
>The instant you approach the second set of doors the fall aside.
>And then you see it.
>Rows upon rows of gold bars stacked to head height stretching out as far as the eye can see.

“By the stars…”

>You can’t begin to guess how many bars there are.
>You reach down and lift one of the bars.
>It looks real.
>But you can’t really tell for sure.
>You’ve never actually held real gold before.
>You’ve handled plenty of bits which you could have traded for real gold at any time.
>But you’ve never felt the need to actually own the precious metal.
>It shines like a brilliant yellow mirror as you stare down at its smooth surface.

“Hello?”

>Silence.
>You can’t believe that it’s all real.
>For anyone to collect this much it would have to be fake.
>>
>>29343202
>The innumerable lumps of lustrous metal can’t possibly be pure gold.
>You need to take one to a jeweler.
>You place one of the hefty bars into your saddlebags and turn around, hoping you can leave.
>The doors behind you are closed.
>There’s a strange glowing piece of glass built into the wall near them.
>It has some script on it.
>The words ‘ask me anything’ are inscribed upon it in a calming blue.

“How do I get out?”

>The words are replaced.
>’Blast doors will open after an identity check. Approach the blast doors to begin.’

>You step towards the doors.
>The open.
>You step away.
>They close.
>Somehow they know when you get close.
>And presumably they also know who you are.

“Who are you?”

>”A machine that was designed to answer your questions.”

>A machine that talks?
>Or writes as it were.
>So many impossible things have happened already you decide not to fight it.

“Is this gold real?”

>’All ingots in the vault are at least 99.9999% pure. It is unlikely the natives of this world will be able to detect any impurities.’

>You still don’t believe it.
>How could that much even exist?
>Speaking of…

“How much is there?”

>’199,999,999 one kilogram bars remain in stock.’

>That’s not possible.
>There’s no way.
>Where could he get that much?
>And how would he get it down here?

“How did this all get in here?”

>’Short range teleportation.’

>Teleportation?
>You were under the impression that he had no magic.
>You turn back to look at the heap of treasure.
>>
>>29343205
>Whether it’s real gold or not, it’s amazing that this creature could get so much metal.
>What’s more is that it’s indisputable that he did it.
>It’s right there in front of you.
>No matter how you try you can’t deny that he has that much metal!
>He built a machine that could fly faster than Rainbow Dash.
>He built a machine that could break a shield powered by an army of unicorns.
>He built a machine that could kill a Titan.
>And he’s even cured death.
>If you’re going to be working with his stuff, working with Spike, you’ll need to abandon the idea of impossible.
>You can’t afford to get hung up on something as mundane as teleportation.
>You need to get moving.
>You need to find ponies who know magic.
>You quickly grab a second kilogram of gold before leaving the vault.

>You are Celestia.
>You’re going completely nuts.
>How long has it been?
>First you were worried.
>Worried about Luna.
>And what Twilight would do.
>Then you were mad at Twilight.
>Enraged that she’d turn on you so quickly.
>Then saddened.
>Horribly depressed about how you’d failed her.
>How you’d not set a good example, prepared her to resist the temptation, or kept her away from the stress and rage.
>Next you started to panic.
>By your estimation it’s been half a year.
>Just based on how many times you’ve slept, you’ve nothing else to work with.
>Shouldn’t Luna have fixed you by now?
>What if she can’t?
>What if she’s dead?
>What if you’re stuck here forever?
>Then finally the most painful of all the sensations finally reached you.
>Boredom.
>Once you’d calmed down a bit you’d resolved to experiment with your new math powers.
>Spike had said they were versatile..
>And he was right.
>Everything you could abstract to numbers fell in line in an instant.
>The encrypted scripts you’d memorized at a glance were laughably easy to crack when you replaced the symbols with numbers.
>>
>>29343210
>Seconds after thinking of that you had each and every one rewritten in standard equestrian, sorted by how many times the symbol for the word ‘the’ appears in each document.
>And yet SOMEHOW, despite having all these documents memorised in your head.
>Despite having this incredible command over numbers.
>And despite having so many worries on your mind?
>You’re so very bored.
>You see nothing.
>You hear nothing.
>You feel nothing.
>Not even a heartbeat or breathing to distract you.
>You started hallucinating long ago.
>At first it was believable, but your visions have grown beyond the scope of sanity.
>Waves and swirls of colours full of eyes drift around in your peripheral vision even though you’re blind.
>And STILL.
>Through every distraction you’re so horribly bored.
>You’d do ANYTHING for a distraction.
>For the first time since your rebirth you miss all the aches and pains you once endured.
>Even the throbbing of a sore joint would be so much better than this!
>Better than nothing.
>You wish you could cry.
>You wish you could SCREAM.
>But you have nothing.
>Nothing but time.
>Nothing but boredom.
>You decide to list all the perfect cubes smaller than ten trillion in reverse order.
>Again.
>It proves to be a slightly less boring couple of seconds.
>Then nothing.
>Time passes.
>Again you don’t know how long.
>But eventually, FINALLY…

INITIATING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS

>Words pop into your head.
>Last time this happened you ‘woke up’ soon after.
>Could it be over?
>Could your torment have finally ended?
>You’re inundated with sensations.
>A biting chill as you’re told it’s about 700 degrees.
>You welcome the unpleasant sensation.
>Blinding light as you’re exposed to a dimly lit room for the first time in ages.
>And the best sensation of all?
>>
>>29343215
>”Is it working? Are you okay?”

>Luna’s voice.
>You reach out and embrace your saviour wishing you could cry.
>She squirms in discomfort but doesn’t object.
>You just hold her for a while.
>Enjoying the sensation of touch.
>Knowing that once again there is more than one pony in the world.
>She just rubs your back gently waiting for you to calm down.

“I, that- thank you! That was terrible! How long has it been?”

>”Thirty-seven days.”

>That’s-
>But-

”I thought it was so much longer!”

>”I’m sorry it took so long. I worked as fast as I could. Things I couldn’t ignore kept coming up.”

“It was so terrible, you can’t imagine how bad that was.”

>”I think I can.”

>Oh no.
>You barely tolerated sixteen days like that.
>And Luna had a thousand years of nothing.
>You can’t imagine a greater torture.
>You hug her tighter.
>Once you’re convinced that it’s real, that this isn’t some dream or another, you let her go.
>She’s covered in bandages!

“What happened to you!?”

>”That’s not important right now.”

“Yes it IS! WHO did this?”

>She smiles and shakes her head.

>”I’m not going to tell you.”

“Why not? Surely you’re upset!”

>”Of course I’m upset. And no, I haven’t forgiven them. I’m not telling you because I know you’d go after the pony who hurt me. I need them alive and well, they’re too important.”

>Luna’s slipping up.
>She told you it was a pony that wounded her.

>”And I know exactly what you’d do to them, because I want to do the exact same to Twilight.”

>Twilight…

“Is she…”

>”Alive.”

>You’re both relieved and surprised that Twilight’s alive.
>There’s no doubt in your mind that Luna hurt her.
>But Twilight’s alive.
>When you find out who wounded Luna…
>You’re not sure you’ll grant the same mercy.

“I should go talk to her.”

>You move to stand up.
>Luna puts a hoof on your back and pushes you down.
>>
>>29343225
>”Give her time. Let her calm down a bit. Let the magic leave her mind before you go.”

“So you…”

>You gesture up to your horn.

>”Yes.”

>Despite all that happened you can’t help but feel sorry for Twilight.
>For her of all ponies to lose her magic.
>It must be torment.

“I had a plan. I wanted to show her that she’d lose her friends if she didn’t change. I think it would have worked. But I suppose I’m too late.”

>”You still love her, don’t you?”

>You do.
>You’ll always love Twilight.
>You’ll always lover her friends.
>Because they brought your sister back to you.

“Yeah.”

>”She’ll come back to you. It might take a while, but she’ll believe that you really are you. Maybe not today. Maybe not this century. But it will happen. If you get your way there will be plenty of ponies who have machinery built into their body. If that gets more common, you’ll be less strange.”

>Such an incredibly daunting task.
>You don’t even know where to start.
>You’re still convinced it’s worthwhile, but actually getting there…

>”Chin up. Spike’s on our side.”

“Spike?”

>”He started a research institute to try and figure out how ponies and magic work, among other things. They’re just getting started so he doesn’t have much to show for it just yet, but he’s agreed to share all his findings with us if we do the same. Where he got the money I’ve no idea. Maybe he’s not paying.”

>Not paying?
>How could he do something like that for free?

“Catch me up on what I missed.”

>”Are you sure? You don’t want to take a day off?”

>You shake your head.

“I’ll just worry.”
>>
>>29343229
>”Cloudsdale and Los Pegasus are no longer part of Equestria. They call themselves Olympia. Most of them worship the nameless one, and many think Spike to be his prophet. I think many of them would work for him for free. I don’t think it’ll be hard to get them to join up with us again, we just need to show them we’re competent.”

>Equestria has been divided.
>That hurts you more than you’d expected.

>”The ponies that called those like you ‘heartless’ were shocked when rumors about the new you got out.”

>No…

“Ponyville, Vanhouver, and Dodge city have united under Twilight’s banner. They still call themselves Equestria and are demanding that we change our name.”

>They’re united under Twilight.
>They’re dangerous.
>She’s not well, and she’s ambitious.
>You’ll have to be careful with them.

>”Manehattan joined up with the Crystal Empire. Leaving us with Fillydelphia, Baltimare, and Canterlot. And numerous minor settlements of course.”

>You stare at the ground before you.
>Unmoving.
>Dejected.

“Equestria was my life’s work. And it’s gone. It collapsed in a single month.”

>”I’m so sorry. I tried to bring it back together, I tried to stop this.”

“I know. Nothing could stop this. They’re scared, divided. The future is uncertain. And I wasn’t there when they needed me.”

>Silence rules for a while.

>”When I first started talking about healing the dead, the nameless one gave me a warning. He said that Equestria wouldn’t survive if we went down that path. I don’t think this is what he meant, I think he was saying that everything assumes ponies will die after a certain amount of time. That when this basic truth was gone everything would need to be rethought. Either way Equestria was finished the moment we decided it was time to reinvent ponies.”

“You’re saying this is for the best?”
>>
>>29343230
>”I’m saying it was inevitable. You built that nation for ponies. To make them the best they could be. Now it’s time to make a new nation. One that doesn’t make the best of a bad pony, instead it will be one that makes a better pony.”

>An Equestria that makes a better pony.
>One that doesn’t keep the cruel in check with fear of reprisal.
>One that doesn’t have dungeons or prisons.
>Not because it can’t sustain them, but because it doesn’t need them.
>An Equestria without hospitals, doctors, or nurses.
>Not because the sick die young.
>But because there are no sick.
>An Equestria where no evils are necessary, and none can be found.
>You built Equestria up once.
>You can do it again.

“First we start recruiting guards. Twilight herself isn’t dangerous yet, but her country will be. We need to be too powerful to attack until she’s back to her old self. She won’t have many weapons yet, and her only good supply of metals are the mines near Dodge city. They’re isolated from the rest of her territory. If you can shut down those mines or at least intercept the supply lines she won’t be able to arm her forces properly. That should buy us some time.”

>”They had a mysterious cave-in a couple days ago. Miraculously enough nopony was hurt, but it’ll take some time before they can open up again.”

>So Luna saw the same weakness and already struck.
>You’d expect no less.

”Let’s go get Captain Spitfire and have her start recruiting. I imagine most of the ponies that remain are loyal to us, they shouldn’t take much convincing. Then we’re going to get all the information we can on pony biology and have the presses distribute it. I want every mentally competent pony to know how ponies work. Next we need to try and contact the not ape and see if he’ll give us any assistance-”

>”He hasn’t answered any calls in over a month. I think we’re on our own.”
>>
>>29343233

“Damn. Alright, then instead I think we should try and reverse engineer the tools you’re using in this machine shop.”

>”We’ll need a power source of some kind. Pinkamena has devoted herself to creating just that and has been making great strides.”

>There’s so very much to do.
>What Equestria will become, what ponies will choose to be, you can’t begin to imagine.
>But one thing is for certain.
>With Luna by your side, you’re going to make them better.
That's it.

As I said above. Not happy with the Twilight part. Problem is it wasn’t getting any better.

I wasn’t sure if I should do a recap when Spike caught Rarity up. But eventually I concluded that since this thing is really damn long and it started over a year ago a quick rundown was probably warranted. Agree? Disagree?

I’m not sure how many of you have dealt with prolonged boredom, but it’s pretty intense. Most human males would prefer pain to boredom. http://archive.is/GHrAD
This is part of why solitary confinement is such an effective punishment. I struggle to imagine what a month of total sensory deprivation would do to Celestia.

Yes I'm glossing over the political ramifications of the alicorn tetrarchy turning against each other. It's beyond the scope of this story.

Paste updated.

>>29343149
Actually, you're right. I disagreed at the time but you're right. Blowing a couple of them to bits would make the fear and hate so much more justified and it would make his actions a lot more consistent. If I were to do it again, that would be different. There's a lot of things I'd do different.
>>
>>29343243
I don't really see any problem with that
At no point were ponies ever really a mortal threat to Anon, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that he would refuse to kill any of them, partially out of mercy and partially just due to stubbornness
Discord, of course, from the very beginning showed himself to act in ways completely beyond human knowledge, to be a mortal threat to Anon, and later on to be capable of regenerating himself in spite of apparent total annihilation, all of which fairly alarming things and warranting lethal force
>>
>>29343281
Its not a simple matter of CAN someone kill you, its that they are WILLING to kill you.
Also, Anon at the time didn't know the full extent of what they could. For all he knew they had an "I win" weapon.
Usually when someone tries to kill you, you kill them first. His fervent refusal to use lethal force was just dumb, and I will say that till the end of the story no matter how it plays out.
>>
>>29343243
Is the story over?
>>
>>29343243
holy crap that is a massive update
>>
>>29343243
Any plans to sort Twilight out? It seems to me that she became a baddie at least for a while even though you said some time ago you didn't intend to make a her a villain.
>>
>>29344101
Tecnically she aint a villain, just astray, there are many parties involved in the whole there and WiK is being based as fuck to keep it all focuse and not wander too much into one or another
>>
>>29343281
This was my reasoning at the time, yes. I still do think the pacifist approach was a mistake. The amount of hate and fear Twilight feels would be so much more warranted if they'd taken some losses, and the dark magic thing could have come about much more naturally if Celestia decided on it immediately after a fatality. It's not really important anymore.

>>29343690
No. There's one more update worth of stuff to cover. Maybe two, these things always wind up longer than I expected.

>>29344101
I do plan on sorting out Twilight. She wound up being worse off than I'd intended, hence the baddie thing. I decided the timeline was going to wind up being unreasonably short in the end so it's getting stretched out, which meant she'd have more time to recover, which meant that if I wanted her in a specific state at the end she had to be worse off in the present. It's a dumb reason to radically alter a character, but there is it.
I'd also argue that as >>29344842 she doesn't qualify as a villain. Her goals are noble, she wants to keep Equestria united and safe. In order to do that she must get rid of what she perceives as a threat. Since her methods are somewhat extreme, this is a weak argument. But not invalid.
>>
>>29343243 didn't he also have an epiphany/empathy moment finding a schoolhouse (or regular house) and coming to a realisation that their race had families and feeling like his own? Or did I fever dream that part?

Because I could see maybe using lethal force on some attackers, but not just on ponies in general. Discord is just a big twisty sumbitch who randomly appears and almost murders him. For all anon knows he is some kind of weapon.

That was my internal rational for why ponies are treated with less overt violence than say Discord. Don't recall his interactions with other race, save Spike.

Either way, what's done is done.
>>
>>29343072
I think I got it. Derpibooru #1338219 is pic related. Secret agents. We also have an image of HAARP, something written in enigma, and wik saying it's a secret. Plus he's being really secretive. There all about SECRETS. Could it be cold war style scientific espionage?
>>
>>29343328
They were also using primitive weapons in comparison and he had no idea about magic.
>>
>>29345693
>They were also using primitive weapons in comparison
Yes, and? It doesn't matter what weapons they were using to try and kill him, the point is they were trying to kill him.
>>
>>29345708
They have no way to get through his defenses and he has no reason to leave. They're more of an annoyance than an actual threat.
>>
>>29343328
So if, say, a frog's trying to kill you, you've got to kill it
Sure, it doesn't have any teeth or claws or venom or really any way of harming you at all whatsoever, but it's still wants you dead and is trying it's damnedest to see to it, ergo you have no choice but to stomp on the thing
>>
>>29345754
The threat level doesn't matter. Just the intent.
If you were in a cabin in the middle of the woods with no way to call for help, and someone was trying to break in and murder you but couldn't get in, you'd kill them first chance you got despite the fact they couldn't reach you to fulfill their intent.

>>29345801
Yeah, totally harmless. Not like they summoned meteors and lava monsters that damaged his base or anything. Or threw whatever those lightning spells were. Sure, he built up to the point where they couldn't do anything to him, but he wasn't always so far ahead that danger to his well being wasn't a concern to him.

dont bother, these hfy faggots all congregate here. hatred filled sociopaths, these people are incapable of putting themselves in the shoes of others who might see their actions as hostile or agressive, and always seek any means of resolution that puts themselves above the lives of others. its why most of the green here is garbage.

Refining your skill set in writing of course.

You've done a damn good job. Nay, an excellent one. Your story has flaws yes, but you are by far the best writer this thread will probably ever have. Truth be told, you carried this thread. Most of the other writers have either jumped ship with their fic, or end up being mediocre in one form or another. Not bad, just not the best it could be.

Truth be told, I am going to miss your content here. Seems to me you are aiming to move on to other threads and start and/or continue stories there. That said, the ride was fun while it lasted. I will remain forever hopeful for any future updates you may bring. I am certain there will be some more writefags in the future, but probably not as capable as you have been. I was enthralled the entire time reading your story. One of the sole reasons why I come to this thread to be honest. The other is just waiting for new content in the vein of this thread. (Like that philosophy stuff with Utilitarianism that still haven't come up. Writefags, I am waiting. No, I am not qualified to write such a story, it would suck donkey turds.)

But anyway, you have given me a new perspective in life. That humanity CAN do better. Reach the level where such powers that this Anon has is utterly trivial, but utterly godlike to us. There would still be future challenges, but still nonetheless humanity would still be expanding. You've gone beyond the call of duty in that regard.

That said, I wouldn't be opposed if you were to still produce content here, if you wish.

If you have any future content for this thread, be it sequel or otherwise, I am up for reading it.

With that, I bid you good tidings Writefag.

that feel when I just got the joke after a second. good one,. but no
I am not generalizing shit. the whole fucking general is based around an idea that twilight fucking sparkle, the booklearned science horse, who grew up in a giant fucking castle and city built into the side of a literal mountain, is too much of an incurious and dismissive cunt to basically say anon is delusional and his people really live in mud huts becuase they have no magic.

You are handing someone an enormous idiot ball for the opportunity to prove them wrong, and you are doing it to the one character who could easily postulate on how it could be done without magic.

what doesn't involve that shitty premise usually involves a bunch of machines and anon mowing down ponies who forgot how to friendship and diplomacy and by all means act like complete cunts to fill the role of inferior villain you have set out for them.

Humanity
Fuck
Yeah
Garbage.

>Twilight: I can't really believe your story Anon, buildings with over 100 levels? Flying boats bigger than Ponyville? And yet there's no magic in your world?
Nowhere does it say that Twilight assumed Anon's people "lived in a mud hut". It's entirely possible that Twilight (who may or may not live in a world where magic is so important that ponies can't imagine life without it) knows that Anon came from some sort of civilization, on par with hers. Her disbelief comes from Anon's fanciful descriptions of advanced technology like computers and skyscrapers that she just can't fathom working without magic. After all, magic is woven quite tightly to ponies and their lives, and those seemingly impossible machines seem impossible to create without some sort of magic. And consider the fact that they live in an era of quills and parchment; computers that perform billions of calculations per second and heavier-than-air vehicles are so much more advanced than writing with a feather that they can't believe that it doesn't involve magic.

As for "mowing down ponies who forgot how to friendship and diplomacy", I'm fairly certain the only active writer who put that in their greentext is Writefag_Is_Kill, and even then Anon doesn't genocide ponies. Neither do the ponies (without a reason) immediately resort to attacking Anon. Even after they've clearly lost, Luna rushes to talk with Anon.

Are these greentexts HFY fics? Without a doubt. Garbage? Maybe, but you could come up with a few better reasons than that.

You're going to give me a big head with posts like that. Thank you.

Despite what many might think I'm somewhat pessimistic about humanity's future. We don't seem to want to have one. The potential is there, though. We could become great. Maybe it'll happen. Maybe we'll get off our collective asses and claim the stars, but there's no way we can do it as we currently are. Many fear the singularity; they're afraid of machines that can improve themselves. I say we should embrace it and become the singularity. We should become those self improving machines. What would we become? How far would we go? That's for greater minds than ours to decide. But there's no doubt in my mind that the current design needs an update.

And I'm not leaving this thread just yet. Might as well spill the beans, I've had my fun and >>29345514 more or less figured it out.

Equestria is in the middle of a scientific revolution. Many call this golden age the second enlightenment, an era of limitless imagination and prosperity. But to keen observers some things don't quite add up. Who's dreaming up all these wonderful inventions? Why do the princesses never make public appearances anymore? And why is nopony allowed in the post office anymore?
Lyra Heartstrings is determined to find out.

I, myself, am rather optimistic about the future.

People seen to forget just how well off we have it right now.

>the only one
starwards/droid anon

>bunch of excuses
>on par with hers
>world where everything works with magic
>he doesn't have any.
>ponies have brick building cities like manehatten.
without magic how is he supposed to make the bricks? what about magic to grind the cement, and magic to power the lamps?
yes the logical consiquence is that if we assume twilight cant imagine a world without magic it means anon lives in a mudhut, because a species with such easy access to magic wont need to invent gas lighting.

First off blimps are not heavier than air vehicles.

Second that star wars story is dead and droid is working on a different story

It's not necessarily that Twilight thinks the Anon lives in mud huts because no-magic. It's that she doubts Anon claims that humans got as far as they did and in some ways surpassed equestria without magic. She thinks Anon is lying about the existence of magic on earth.

just another ass backwards way of saying "ponies are retarded and humans are superior"

in your rush to "correct" me you have only shown that you are missing the fucking point; HFY garbage

Blimps have near neutral buoyancy and control their elevation through the angle of their engines and are pulled down by ropes when landing, or if they use hydrogen then that's vented into the atmosphere. That's not exactly something many would consider heavier than air.

Look at it from an "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." and "Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology." kind of view. For a long time our ability to produce steel was incredibly limited. In the 18740's when Eads Bridge was built the idea of producing enough steel to make it across the mississippi was viewed as a massive waste a resources because of their limited ability to produce enough steel. But the bridge was built and today building a steel bridge like that wouldn't be thought of as unusual. If told anyone from the medieval period of human history how much steel we make today, even if they were Roger Bacon they would not believe you. To them it would be like magic.

It's not that they're dumb it's just they are provided with a situation for which they have little context for. If Twilight tried to explain all the complex mechanisms behind magic you would be lost too. We are where we are because we are standing on the shoulders of giants. Equestrian are standing on their own giants and see things from a different view.

>I'm a pedantic faggot and I'm only referring to the part of the blimp that holds the gas not the whole thing
>I require false dichotomies to properly converse with anyone about my point of view
Why do you even bother existing when everyone but you is wrong no matter what? You're clearly the pinnacle of human development, all that's left is to kill yourself and grace whatever afterlife you believe in with your presence.

>the state of my attempts to be on time
So, I've written out three versions of the side block and haven't been happy with any of them. I still like the idea but I've realised that I could have had the next main block out by now if I had focused on that instead, so I'm putting this little aside on the backburner.
The story will continue next thread.
I apologise for failiure to deliver, but I don't want to put out sub-par content and you should know by now that me and schedules don't get along.

See ya' in the next one.

Also, it deserves to be stated again and again that WiK, you are an absolute madman and your dedication to this shit is ridiculous.
You're the real mvp of this goofy place.
