Maybe it's a sense of the unknown. Maybe it's the overall darker coloring to the movie compared to the others.
It is a summer camp in the forest. They always feel a little dark.
But those songs do feel a bit 'ominous'

Yeah, they seemed more focused on the "twist ending" reveal of trying to convince you that Timber is the bad one than revealing that Gloriosa is rather than establish an antagonist early on like the other three.
We knew their antagonists from the first scenes.

The best way I could describe it is like this: it feels like mlp as a whole is coming to an end.

The lanterns scene in particular, is probably because you've been conditioned to relate "releasing paper lanterns" with a memorial or regret sequence. It's a pretty common trope, and you've probably seen it enough for it to become unconsciously linked.

I really hate the Soundtrack for LoE. Don't get me wrong, all the songs are currently in my phone and plays on Loop, and Daniel did a fantastic job with all of them. Embrace the magic was kinda weak

But All the songs have a nice Light-Fantasy Theme going on with them, and instead we get this bizarre Mystery Movie set at Summer Camp.

For me it was kind of depressing if anything, back in my days the high school was a nightmare I couldn't wake up from. I like EqG and School Animu in general because it gives me something I never had, an idea of how it is to be a normal teenager and have fun, romances and nights out.
