Alterjack(AU Applejack) apparently fought Chitania and Sunset when she first arrived, it was a battle so massive it left a brand spanking new forest in the middle of nowhere and left Chitty with a sizable wound on her arm.

She lost, got her memory of the incident wiped, and was left beaten in the middle of nowhere, and doesn't know what happened.

For once, everyone knew what she was talking about.

As the precious changeling princess buzzed about in her furor, giving out gifts she had pried from the depth of the defeated wrapping paper monstrosity she had faced to anyone who was within reach. Boxes of all shapes and sizes were laid out and given with pride, no matter how abhorrent the wrapping paper around it was tied.

No others had a gift to bring, none had known to bring them after all, but all felt that special connection as they freely shared what they could in lieu of simple material possessions.

"Well, guess we made it through another year, gals."

"That we did. But do not ask me to calculate what the odds are we're going to make it through another one."

"Ahhh, quit being so pessimistic, Twi! I lost my freaking job this year, and I'm more optimistic. We'll make it through. Worst case scenario, we go get us some more magic necklaces, magic necklaces fix everything."

From the Captain in Canterlot to the one down in Ponyville, sharing a nice moment with one they'd grown to love. From the ones with so little power doing good even now, to the ones with influence to spare looking ahead and dreaming of what will come next. From the ones who plotted and schemed, to those who had put it aside to live in this wonderful moment before it came to it's close. Family, friendship, acquaintances that would not be forgot, all of these connected on a simple day, a wonderful day, a magical day in a world full of magic.

Each story was as long as it was strange. Those that had grown from selfish monsters into ones who would care for their strange friends life, to those who had been blind to the love they had been given until it had gone away. Those who had grown and changed, and those who had not done so for the better. None of them, anyone, would have recognized themselves as they were not that long ago. They had all changed, yet the need to be together in this time never had.

None could see this more clearly than the outsider, the one looking in, the one who saw all things with clear thoughts and a clearer head, the one who had let this time slip her by more than once, and likely would have again had she been where she truly belonged.

Two watchful eyes that scanned and pondered and thought, cataloging every expense, tailoring every moment that could be spent and what it could be spent doing, calculating the long term work in a way only a farmer, even one who had not seen her crop in so long, could.

She watched them, all of them, with eyes that saw every flaw.

But did not miss every bright spot in her sight.

This world was strange to her, abhorrent even. So many things were so very, very wrong.

But some things had gone so very, very right.

They were not an unsalvageable world, only a misguided one. With every upside she spotted, she saw more and more that this world had not yet gone off the edge. Every flaw pushed it closer, but it had not gone there yet.

There was so very much that needed fixing, so many answers still to the presence of the changelings that needed found, and so many more cracks beneath the surface that those who had thrown down the rug were too scared to find, even as it threatened to sink the bottom out beneath them.

This party had shown her things. She had learned so much in so short a time. She had listened, followed, and she had learned what she needed to do, just like a leader should.

The eyes that watched were the eyes of a princess, nothing less. Eyes that were both judgemental, but nurturing. She had seen where they had stumbled, and they just needed a hoof to push them to better for their subjects.

She did not know how much longer she had in this world.

Princess Applejack would make the most of it.

"It's coming!"

There was a chime, and it seemed the gong had been sounded.

"Here it comes! Count it down!"

"Ten!"

Their cheers rocked the castle of magical stone to it's very foundation.

As did the sudden and booming slam of the castle doors, broken beneath a stampede that was soon to follow.

"HE CAMMMME!"

The cheers died down, or were drowned out, beneath a massive synchronized chant of a single voice spread out across a hundred changelings. They ran, they flew, they walked on the walls, anything it took to pour into the room en masse in a way that nearly had one princess ready to open fire and tear apart the entirety of the castle in one fell swoop.

But even she, in her act quickly and bring the resolution mindset stalled when she saw all of their happy, smiling faces, and registered everyone of them was carrying a present with glee up to their Queen.

"HE CAME HE CAME HE CAME LOOOK MAJESTY THE RED SPIRIT CAMEEEEE!"

The first bout of confusion lasted for only a second, soon wiped away, and shoved back with a loud and crackling laugh.

"HAH!"

She rubbed the closest one's head like a little puppy, and the little bug chirped with joy very much like one.

"Well, I guess you were good this year. But if you don't next year..."

"We'll be good!"

Again they had spoken in that same strange, nearly hivemind like voice, and again she smiled.

"Alright then... well, looks like this year started off right, let's get some presents!"

The crowd, pony changeling or otherwise, let out a cheer and the room was filled with the ripping sound of shredding paper, and the gasps and squeals as one by one they got their gifts. Big, small, in the end it didn't matter, this time was every bit as precious as anything that could have been wrapped.

"Aww, I feel short changed."

"I'm with Caddy, they'd better give us some gifts later."

"HAH! So greedy! Really, you all don't know thing one about the joy of the holidays."

"Says the changeling no doubt planning to take her gift one way or another... no, Majesty, I'm not going to do that."

"Stop trying to drag punchbug into your schemes, I've probably got something back in Canterlot."

"Like lint. Thou likes lint, right?"

"HAH!"

"Don't worry, girls, I've got your special gift for later. After we put Two to bed."

Six different mares suddenly smiled in a glee that would have put any child to shame.

One such child in question just confusedly blinked on the matter.

Two mares were the only ones to share a lost look.

"Spitfire, what doth he mean, exactly?"

"I have no freaking clue."

"Are... are we being invited too? May we come as well? We are... curious."

"This is going to be fun."

The princess of the Night, and the Captain of the Crystal Airforce would not let them see the warmth cross their cheeks.

No matter how much they felt it.

A wholly different warmth crossed the orange mare not so far away from her bickering family, a warmth that made her heart beat faster, and a silent thanks escape her lips that they could be here to share this with her.

Her smile only grew when she looked back to her friends, each one sporting a new gift, and a grin so very much like hers.

"Well, partners, ya' ready for this next year?"

"Are we ever! I've got a lot to fix this time around... and I'm not going to let it pass me by. My Hearth Warming resolution, I'm fixing what I broke as Captain."

"Way to go, Dashie! And I'm getting Partyland up and running!"

"I'm going to help someone... finally make up for what he did."

"I'm going to finally get some science done, it's been too long!"

"And I, darling, shall finally earn my wings!... Better late than never."

"I'm gonna... grow up, a little bit. That's the plan. What about you, Applejack?"

"Me... Hrm, Ah' guess-"

"She's going to finally start being a princess."

The merriment of the seven had seemed inextinguishable, a flame that should not have ever gone out. Yet, beneath the icy stare of the newest oh so familiar arrival, even their roaring warmth had gone chill.

The mirror of their friend marched right up to her universal counterpart, looked her right in the eye, and glared.

The hoof so similar to their friends reached out, summoned a large drink of their finest cider to her hoof, dropped in what seemed to be some sort of capsules that made it fizz and bubble angrily, and slugged the thing down right in front of all of them before dropping her cup to the floor.

"You're going to fix Equestria... or else."

The gauntlet had been thrown down.

"...Bring it."

And met.

This year had brought changes.

This world had changed with it.

One way another, for good or ill, beyond this day it would change so much more.

New lives would come to this world. Kingdoms built, rebuilt, or brought low. New relationships yet to come, new loves yet to be found, new hearts, new homes, and new worlds to explore. Everything would change, and they would meet that change, and they would meet it together.

That was their promise, their resolution for the year to come. The thought that brought back the joy, and the laughter, for as long as it could last.

To the stranger, to their companions, to the ones they loved, to their friends. All of them toasted, and gave the same promise they swore they would keep.

"Lets do this new year right."

The crowd was thick, but it seemed to quickly and obediently thin to make way for this elegantly dressed new version of Applejack. She caught a few snippets of hushed ‘goodbyes’ from the alternate versions of her ‘friends’ and associates, clearly wanting to wish her well but not loud enough so as to engage in actual conversation.

Which was fine by her. The less attachments she made during her stay here, the better.

She didn’t begrudge them their kindness… but doing what needed to be done, for the betterment of Equestria and beyond, she couldn’t allow herself to indulge in such pleasantries, especially with the outcome of such leisures laid out before her like a decayed meal she was forced to pick through to see if anything were salvable.

Teleporting was the quickest sensible option, and normally, the sensible option was what she settled on regardless of feelings or emotions trampled along the way.

Everything was for the best. In the end.

But she didn’t teleport. It’d been some time since she’d trotted about within the Empire’s castle… and with good reason considering what had occurred throughout these resplendent walls….

The lines around her hardened face grew even more pronounced when she narrowed her eyes against the memories beginning to sprout like apple seeds in her perpetually taxed mind.

She had been no more than a couple steps from exiting the castle proper when she heard it, that voice that caused both ears to flicker, and for her mouth, previously lowered in a scowl, to draw up slightly.

How long had it been since she had heard that tone…?

Robotically, she turned, leading with her eyes, and saw him standing there, half hidden in the shadows he so loved moving between. That mane, that coat… those shades hanging around his neck—

There was little doubt that Jetset had been following her since before she had left the party, and, judging by the conserved yet yielding expression on his face, she could only assume he already knew she was the alternate version to the Applejack still with the others.

Time seem to fade from her as she stared, her emerald pupils taking in every little differing detail of this world’s Jetset, from the way he styled his mane to his posture to the comforting sight of his chest as it extended with each breath.

“Come here, Jetset.”

And he did, stepping with that professionalism beaten into him by his handler. The confusion was prominent on his face despite his best efforts at appearing unfazed but she knew he would never ask for clarification.

After all, what kind of proper agent needed situations spelled out for them? That was their job, to know more than most, to act quicker than most.

When he stood before her, she had to incline her head slightly to meet his gaze. Where Celestia found the intensity of his stare unnerving, she herself found it rather winsome.

“How long’s it been….”

She paused mid-question, switching topics in an instant.

“…since you used those shades of yours?”

That was obviously not the inquiry Jetset had been expecting, but he took it in stride, glancing down at his dangling eyewear, then up again.

“That’s good. That’s… real good there, Jetset.”

There must have been something on her face, some sort of emotion that she had previously kept under lock and key come out into clearer focus, because the tip of Jetset’s horn ignited with simple illumination magic.

And that was all she said, promptly spinning on her hooves and continuing out the castle. She got about as far as descending the front steps before pausing, staring ahead not at the surrounding empire of crystals, but towards making good on her drive to improve this shoddily operated Equestria.

Consciousness was a cruel, fickle mistress, prone to leaving you at the most vital of moments in your life, and returning when you least needed it to stick around. Like a Diva, consciousness demanded your attention at moments you really wished you didn't have to deal with it. And consciousness was something that returned to Sunset Shimmer like a guilty husband after a long night of alcoholic excess, smelling like booze, sweat and shame.

Consciousness, Sunset Shimmer decided in the muddy haze of her awakening, was a two-timing jackass and she wanted to file for divorce from it as soon as possible.

When she finished with her half-awake grousing and grumbling and started analyzing the state of herself and her surroundings, the first thing the prodigious unicorn noticed was that she couldn't remember anything had happened past midnight.

Like a film reel cruelly torn by the snipping scissor of an overzealous moral guardian, the last thing she recalled was taking maybe one cup too much in her festive mood, before it all merged together in an unclear recollection of indistinct sounds, colors and shapes.

A quick survey of the room she found herself in confirmed that something must've gone horribly wrong or horribly right after she stopped paying attention on what everyone else was doing for just a couple of hours.

The most notable deviation from the grand living room they had chosen to celebrate in was a literal -not a proverbial, a literal, Sunset had to reiterate to herself here- mountain of empty bottles of varying, alcoholic beverages that was blocking the main door out of this place. From a distance, she could make out gin, whiskey, mead, vodka, Zap Apple Cider Special, wine, beer ale, Ouzo, Tequila... and the fact that the whole pile was shaking slowly, as if it was alive.

But far more pressing was the fact that someone, or something, had taken meticulous and downright ridiculous care to build a round, twiggy nest as big as a cart out of the Christmas tree they had set up and decorated last night, with several, long strings of flickering lights and colorful, festive bands of cloth fastened to the towel rails within the bathroom keeping it suspended despite it hanging halfway off the window sill.

The fact that the entire floor was covered with countless buckets surrounded by the missing towels from the aforementioned towel rack, all filled with an unidentifiable, brownish-black sludge, only registered partially on her.

Now, Sunset Shimmer wasn't someone to take something like that laying down, and was right on her way to get up and give someone a piece of her mind... but she discovered that said tirade would have to wait until after she figured out whoever that warm, gently snoring someone on her back was.

Before she could address or even question him, the pegasus bent over a nearby bucket and expelled a wave of what looked like a cocktail of vomit, motor oil and screws, of all things. When he was finished, he at least had the courtesy wipe his muzzle with one of the towels, instead of his hoof.

And just in time for the peeking set of pink eyes emerging from the top of the nest outside to miss the initial form she had worn.

More and more, everyone started rouse and dislodge themselves from wherever they were stuck, groaning, rubbing their heads and mumbling to themselves.

Sunset's well-wishes were aptly punctuated by Chitania deciding to void her stomach, right then and there, allowing them all to witness a tidal wave of disgusting, green-glowing Changeling goop that knocked over all of the other buckets to create a singly, smelly tidal wave of puke that ruined everything.

Sunset Shimmer felt like the entirety of that was a perfect representation of her life since she returned to Equestria.

Still, watching everyone get up, a ghost of a smile on their lips as they remembered last night and started cleaning up the mess, made her realize one thing: despite being roller coaster of many treacherous ups and downs that made it impossible to predict what gut-twisting loop she would be thrown into next...

In no time at all, two determined eyes were staring straight at the massive office doors that lead to the greatest gathering of Equestria’s heroes in their history. And all the failure that had come with it. It was guarded, it was blocked, she could see magical runes on the side, and a security bolt on the door. She could see cameras overhead, she could see barricades behind the door, and she could feel the energy humming inside of wires inside of the very depths of those walls, enough to fill an entire town for a day.

The princess of another world just tilted her head, popped her neck, and nodded.
