It was painfully obvious someone had to have an episode with zombies, but it didn't dominate the episode as much as I feared.

There was lots of well timed comedy that had nothing to do with the zombies, though the whiners just write of as Rainbow being mean and OOC even though she's always been mischievous and she hadn't been seen pulling pranks for a long time. I had never before laughed at a whoopie cushion joke, but the episode made it work with the setup and how it fit into the story.

I liked how the episode worked on multiple audience levels. If you already figure out that the zombies are just one big prank (anyone over the age of 7), then you can still appreciate the ponies' acting. I found it charming how much effort they were putting into it.

Instead of waiting for the obvious eye-rolling reveal, it feels like you're in on the joke too.

It was ok, but I still don't like how they characterized RD. She's had plenty of episodes where she's shown she understands Fluttershy's sensitivity and shouldn't prank her, but the writer decided to erase her memory for this episode, and even AJ commented about how Fluttershy's "too easy" instead of getting on RD's case for being insensitive to her best friend. And then RD goes off and starts harassing ponies in the name of prank escalation.

Just seemed like the writer wasn't really in touch with the show's characters, and you could basically replace any of them with another pony without changing the plot at all.

You kinda missed the entire point of that comic then.

The problem with MMDW wasn't the secret plot against RD. Obviously she's a character who learns more from example than a friendship lecture. It was that the confict wasn't even RD's fault in the first place. She hadn't even done anything wrong until her friends started one-upping her. They're the ones causing the whole conflict because they don't approve of her style.

Yet the secret plot never actually teaches her the stated moral, 'don't be Tony Stark, be humble!' Instead, they "crush Dash's spirit and resolve" as in panel 2 of the comic. All her fans abandon her and she's taught that her entire personality is wrong and shameful. What a great moral. She only learns the truth by getting desperate and chasing after the hero. If her friends didn't get caught by accident, when were they even planning to confess?

In 28PL it's clearly established early that RD is going overboard, so she's causing her own problem. And unlike MMDW, the prank is teaching her the intended moral by example. RD just gets scared, not crushed and abandoned. This time it's actually a taste of her own medicine, instead of a passive aggressive conspiracy to reprogram her.

28PL is a rehash in only a superficial way. It seems like a lot of the hate is a traumatic reaction to MMDW's terrible writing, ignoring how differently they were executed.

in MMDW, they tried to get her to see she was being a faggot on her own, they didnt directly tell her before they resorted to trying to one-up her. that was the problem; a problem this episode didnt have.

I'm aware of the full scene. The only relevant part here is Rarity's words "put more effort", because those are the last words, and the words Rainbow replies to. Rainbow understands that if they don't think that her pranks are funny it is because her pranks are too lame (which is also what AJ says, so it makes perfect sense for her to understand it that way). She proves her misunderstanding in her last reply and NO ONE tries to correct her. Therefore the message isn't "stop", the message is "try harder", which she does.

I'm not saying that they didn't try to stop, I'm saying that you can't call a real attempt to stop someone when that someone says "ok, I'll try harder" and you just say "uh, I think she maybe didn't understand" instead of saying "no, don't try harder, stop". It is funny that you think that contriving plots is the proper course of action because Rainbow won't listen, yet no one tried to say "Rainbow, stop, period".
