As I tell you, they were novelty and everyone loved how they looked more "mature" than the show, we were hyped up for their potential, rather than the actual issues, we were all amazed at the scene were chrysalis eats a cat thingy off screen, or spike "battling" giant cockatrices that didn't actually do anything and didn't care just how weak the overall plot was.
Even the writers didn't put much of themselves either because they didn't know yet if it was going to sell well; and once it did, they did too, but that didn't really change their creation process or how each writer portrayed certain characters in retrospective. If you go read the very first issue, the big mac micro and other early Cook&Price you will find many or their trademark flaws already showing up, they just weren't as obvious back then.

Comics were shit from day one and infected the show.

I've made it a point nowadays to always say the same thing regardless of how I feel, or I know other Anons feel, at the end of a comic. Just because there may be one that did in fact enjoy it and I feel I have no right to take it away from them at the end of a comic.
