The cool air flows past your face. It really is quite peaceful up here.
The balloon starts to descend. A small settlement slowly comes into view.
You pull out an old letter given to you by your master. Some of the words have gotten smeared and smudged while being tucked away.
"Dear ---,
I am incredibly lucky to have you as an apprentice, and I hope you're having a great time studying in Equestria. However, I fear that you've not yet grasped the true meaning of your work. You may know your studies better than any other student, but to truly know what a culture is about, you must immerse yourself in said culture. Books are not exactly a great substitute for real life experiences. So, I have a proposition for you. I've an old friend who lives in the badlands, and he's willing to teach you all he knows about the way of life in one of the least studied places of the world! I believe it'll be good for you. In this envelope is the location of his house. Take this to a runner, and they'll be able to get you there. You don't have to go, but I highly suggest you do.
Best regards, Dee"
You let out a sigh.
The Badlands aren't exactly as glorious as the hills and forests of Equestria, but Dee's never given you bad advice before.
So, a few days ago you decided to take up the offer and packed for your trip.
Now, you're nearing the entrance to the almost completely unknown world of the Badlands.
The balloon touches the ground. Small huts and tents are set up about place, with quite a few ponies and various races bustling about.
>"'ere we are! Tha Badlands! Well, almost. Hope tha trip wasn't too boring for ya, uh... Ahm sorry, aye can't remember yer name."
The fiery unicorn pilot chuckles.
>"What was it again?"
Character creation time! Who are you? What do you look like? What are you? It's up to you all.

You're thankful for what little that is known of the Badlands. From what you've read, a cloak and some goggles should be enough to protect you from any harshness of the weather.
After donning your new outfit, you start to ask around about whatever runners are. Unfortunately, most ponies here don't care much for your presence. They usually just point in a direction and grunt. They all point to a boat-like craft sitting near the bottom of the large canyon that leads into the Badlands.
Two figures sit in the craft.
How do you introduce yourself?

Well we have some clues as to what is a runner. Some kind of boat with skis and sails. Used to traverse desert terrain.
A runner could be a person who provides a method of transportation for a fee, couriers, delivery service, sand pirates - who knows. Dang ponies wont give a bit of time that they're wasting to be productive and helpful.
Go investigate.
>>
>>29113218
We have any means to defend ourself, or is our only means of defense our "silver tongue" and feminine charms?
>>
>>29113244
You spending a lot of time in colt quest threads, anon?
>>
>>29113218
Walk up to the side of the boat and knock on it. If they don't notice, gradually increase the force of your knocks.
When they acknowledge you, tell them that your master Dee sent you looking for "runners."
>>
>>29113218
We should put our hood up too, it'll give us some cool points. Goggles too.
>>
>>29113218
Use our sneaky deer skills to get closer unnoticed.

You walk towards the craft, trying to be as sneaky as possible.
Unfortunately, one of the figures hears you and hangs over the side to look at you.
You clear your throat.
"Hello, my name is Folk Ta-"
You get a good look at the figure.
"CH-CHANGELING!"
You cower behind your saddlebags.
"P-please don't suck the love out of me!"
>"Hm... hmwha? What's happenin'?"
The changeling buzzes.
>"A deer? In these parts?"
The human looks over at you.
>"Well wouldja lookit that. Hey, hey deer lady, cm'ere."
You look over your bag.
>"Don't worry, I don't bite."
You stare at the changeling.
The human chuckles.
>"She doesn't bite either."
"A-are you sure about that?"
>"Positive."
You gulp and shakily walk towards the craft. So much for a good first impression.
>"What're you doing way out here, deer lady?"
"I-I'm looking for...," you clear your throat, "I'm looking for runners. Do you know where I can find some?"
>"You're lookin at two of em."
"Really?"
He nods.
>"But where are our manners. I'm Gash, and this is Shahra."
You bow your head.
"I am Folk Tale, from the Eastern Cervine kingdom."
>Gash: "Wow, so formal and everything. So, why're ya looking for runners?"
"I need to get somewhere in the Badlands. I was told Runners could get me there?"
>Gash: "You've been told right. If ya need to get somewhere in the Badlands, we can take ya there."
You fish the letter back out and produce the paper with the directions to him.
"Can you take me here?"
He looks at the paper.
>Gash: "'course."
"Great! Now, uh, how do I pay for the service? Do you accept bits?"
>Gash: "No need."
"Beg pardon?"
>Gash: "This trip's already paid for."
"How is that possible?"
>Gash: "This paper comes from our village. Its got'n enchantment on it."
"I don't follow."
>Gash: "It's like a waiver."
"Oh. So I don't need to pay?"
>>
>>29113385
>Gash: "Nope. Tips are welcome though."
He laughs.
You can't really tell, but you think the changeling rolled her eyes.
>Gash: "So, are ya ready to go?"
>>
>>29113387
Yep hop on
Lets discard any plans of seduction now we now theres a changling on board though

At least until we get to know them better
>>
>>29113387
Stiffen up, raising your head and ears, scan the horizon and then bound onto the ship.

Then say yes and act like nothing happened.
>>
>>29113385
Wow, that's kind of suspicious. Do we really know there is an enchantment on that paper? We're not about to get ourselves deernaped ar we? Is there any guarentee of our safe return?

Oh well, we're here for paricipant observation, we gotta go, lets just hope this works out.
>>
>>29113441
>Getting deernaped by a changling and a human
Thats pretty fucking hot
>>
>>29113385
We might have been kind of rude to that changeling. Maybe we should reach out to her with awkward small talk to smooth it over and get to know her better. Getting to know these creatures is what we're here for anyways.

You clear your throat again to get rid of any frogs in there. They probably think you're some kind of wimp though. Maybe if you do something cool they might think better of you.
You stiffen your posture, perk your ears and you scan the horizon. You'd bound onto the ship if you were athletic enough.
"Yes."
>Gash: "Haha, you're a funny deer, Folk. Hop in."
Shoot. That didn't work at all.
"A-alright.
Slowly, you climb into the ship.
"So, what is this craft?"
>Gash: "This here is a Sip."
"A... sip?"
>Gash: "Mhmm. Short for Sand Skipper."
You don't think that's how shortening words works.
"How does it move?"
>Gash: "I'll show ya."
He rummages through a pack and pulls out a stone with some engravings on it.
>Gash: "This is a running stone."
"Running stone?"
>Gash: "Yep. We use em to power our sips."
"How does it do that?"
>Gash: "Like this."
He takes the paper you gave him and places it on the stone. Somehow the paper glues itself to the stone's surface and begins to float. Gash moves his hands around the stone as it's floating, and a white smoke encircles it. A sail starts to lift into position above the sip, and you feel the whole craft move forward.
Suddenly, it jolts forward, releasing a huge amount of wind. The sip lurches into the canyon, maneuvering between the rock walls.
You see a light rapidly approaching.
Gash calls out to you.
>Gash: "So you've never been to the Badlands before?"
"No!"
The wind makes you yell just to be heard.
>Gash: "Well get ready, because we're just abouuuuut..."
You're blinded as sip jumps into the sunlight once more. You hit the ground with a sandy thud.
>>
>>29113476
>>29113461
>Gash: "Here."
You rub your eyes and slowly adjust to the light.
>Gash: "Welcome to the Badlands."
A vast expanse of sand expands in every direction ahead of you, only disrupted by sharp rocks jutting out of the ground. The cloudless sky is a pinkish red, dotted only by the sun.
The sip slows down a bit, enough to where you can talk normally.
>Gash: "We should get there in a few days."
"A few days? Do we have enough supplies for that?"
>Gash: "No, we'll need to stop at a settlement to restock on the way. That alright?"
"Mhmm."
You sit down. You're kinda excited about all this. Admittedly you were pretty skeptical about Dee's proposal, but now that you're here, it's filling you with energy.
Although... you kinda feel bad about reacting to the changeling the way you did. She probably gets reactions like that all the time. Maybe you should say something? You're not sure. Will that seem too desperate?
>>
>>29113479
Nah it will seem desperate
Talk to her in a few hours so its not so obvious just chat normaly

>>
>>29113546

>>
>>29113479
I'm sure Tale had reasons to fear changelings back home. Maybe they're used as stories to keep children from misbehaving, or there's some kind of fighting back home. Who knows.

Talk a bit with Shahra. Ask her what's it like living out here, does she have any friends and family? Ask the same for Gash.

Emotions are, some what relevant to changelings yes? Would a hug do anything for her, or is that somekind of racist gesture that many assume changelings would appreciate. 'Oh look a person is offering me food / emotions to help sustain myself how thoughtful'.
>>
>>29113479
So changelings can feed on ambient emotions or some swizz? Think happy thoughts. Think about how cool she is in a rugged survivalist way, or mysterious guides.
>>

Make sure to buy a thermal blanket and some life insurance when we reach the town.

So how did the badlands earn it's namesake? Was it because it's a vast desent territory, do dangerous creatures lurk within?

No, no anon I doubt that will be implemented here.
>>
>>29113479
Why aren't we taking any notes? This is a research trip after all. A potentially friendly changelings, a magically powered land ship, an odd way of naming things, and we've only just begun!
>>

>I have a proposition for you. I've an old friend who lives in the badlands, and he's willing to teach you all he knows about the way of life in one of the least studied places of the world!

You fidget with your hooves. Social interactions aren't really your strong suit. Perhaps you should say something to break the ice? Yeah, that's good. What do you say to break the ice with a changeling though? Changelings like emotions, so maybe something about emotions. Yeah, yeah this should work. Just say something about emotions.
"Hey Shahra, do you want a hug?"
Why did you say that. Of all the things to say.
Gash laughs. Shahra just looks at you funny.
>Gash: "So, are you some kind of traveling comedian or somethin'? You're pretty good if you are."
"N-no. I'm an Equiopoligist. I study societies and equine kind mostly."
>Gash: "What, so like an anthropologist?"
"Yes, but not exclusively humans or ponies."
>Gash: "That's pretty cool, dont'cha think?"
He nudges Shahra with his elbow. She just buzzes.
>Gash: "You're headed to the Badlands to study it then?"
"Mhmm. I'm pretty excited too."
>Gash: "Well, if you have some questions, feel free to-"
"Why do you both wear so many bandages?"
He chuckles.
>Gash: "Eager, eh? Well, not all badlanders wear stuff like this. It's mostly runners that look this cool."
Another buzz.
>Gash: "And they're not bandages. Think of em like, magical clothes. They fit to your body just right and keep you nice n cool too. Plus they protect you from sand and dust."
He looks back at you.
>Gash: "Pretty cool, right?"
You nod. You have to admit, that does sound pretty cool.
"Can anyone get clothes like that?"
>Gash: "Sure, if you find the Wizard of the Sands."
"The who-"
You're cut off by loud buzzing from Shahra.
>Gash: "He's not just a legend, he's real. Where else do you think these came from?"
>Shahra: "Buzubuzzzzbuzbzu."
>Gash: "Whatever, you're just a spoilsport who doesn't like to have fun. Anyways, got any more questions?"

>>
>>29118653
"Oh, uh, I was wondering if you knew how the Badlands got its namesake. Is it because of the vast desert territory? Or is it because dangerous beasts lurk within the sands?"
>Gash: "Pft-hahhhahha! You certainly like it dramatic, huh?"
He wipes his face while chuckling.
>Gash: "Well, to answer your question, it's actually both. Plus a few other reasons."
"What other reasons?"
>Gash: "Well, legend has it that long ago, there was a brave adventurer who could slay beasts and giants using nothing but his fists! He traveled the world and saw things no other person or pony had ever seen. And then, one day, he found the wall that borders the badlands. He cracked a pathway open with just one chop of his hand and ventured inside. Then, after laying his eyes on the lands that cover this place, he muttered an ancient saying."
You excitedly lean in as he beckons to whisper in your ear.
"What'd he say!?"
>Gash: "He said..."
"Yeah?!"
Gash speaks softly.
>Gash: "This place sucks."
He chuckles.
>Gash: "AND SO IT WAS! This place was named the BADlands. Because it was BAD. And we liked it that way. So badlanders settled in and starting exploring. Now we're here."
>Shahra: "bzbbzbzz."
He laughs again.
>Gash: "Seriously though, I think the name just keeps people who shouldn't be here out through fear or something, because yeah it's pretty dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Anything else?"

>Gash: "C'mon, I'm sure she didn't mean to act like that when she saw you. Right?"
"O-oh gosh no, I just... Changelings aren't common where I'm from, and when we do hear about them it's usually about them trying to take over a kingdom. I guess I let those stories get the better of me..."
You feel really embarrassed so you lower your head.
>Gash: "See? Common misunderstanding. Cmooooooon, I can't do all the talkin' here."
She huffs. Suddenly, there's a bright flash of green light and smoke. You look back to where Shahra was.
>Shahra: "How's this, princess?"
>Gash: "Thank you. Now, how about you take the next question?"
She rolls her eyes for what seems like the third time today.

"Um, actually, I don't know much about changelings. Would it be rude to ask you some things?"
She sighs.
>Shahra: "I guess not."
"Oh, um..."
Honestly you have quite a few questions for the changeling. What's it like living here, does she have any family with her, how does she feed. But you figure you'll start small then work up.
"So, is the disguise for my comfort or can you not speak equestrian while in your normal form?"
>Shahra: "Changelings can't talk unless they're changed. Otherwise we just speak changeling."
"Huh, I didn't know that. And Gash can understand you when you speak changeling?"
>Gash: "Sure can!"
>Shahra: "Unfortunately."
"Oh uh, how about the badlands? What's it like living here? Do you have any family with you? Do you feed on emotions like other changelings?"
>Shahra: "Living here is fine, no I don't, and yes."
"No family? Don't all changelings have hives?"
She slumps further into the seat. Gash looks back at you and does what you assume is a "don't ask about that" gesture.
"Er- you don't need to answer that one. How about feeding? How do you feed without harming other beings?"
>Shahra: "See those runes on my horn?"
"Yes?"
>Shahra: "That's how."
"Really? Why don't all changelin-"

"Who's the 'Wizard of the Sands' you were talking about earlier?"
Gash seems like he's excited.

>Gash: "Okay so, a really really REALLY long time ago, the Badlands were like, SUPER dangerous. A lot more dangerous than it is now. There were horrible monsters and giants and all manner of terrifying critters! The place was basically inhospitable to ponies n humans. Then, one day this dude showed up. He got rid of all the monsters and put them into the ground, never to come back again! He helped the first settlers get all settled up, but then he vanished, never to be seen again."
He turns around to you, beaming,
>Gash: "But he taught lots of people how to do all sorts of things! Like, how to use these stone things that have weird powers, and how to-"
>Shahra: "It's a story for foals."
>Gash: "Is not! How else could people have settled here if he hadn't gotten rid of the monsters?"
>Shahra: "The monsters aren't gone you idiot, they're everywhere. Ponies just had to tough it out till they got footing. The 'Wizard' is just some old mare's tale."

You think you saw her smile but you're not too sure.
You just chock it up to a yes. It makes her seem more approachable.
The wind flows past your ears as you look out over the landscape. It's rather calming.
"Hey Gash, did that paper mention who paid for the trip?"
>Gash: "Nope. Just directions."
"Is that normal?"

I had some more questions about your magical wrapping. Alongside keeping you burning up from the heat and making you look cool, can they also protect you from the cold? It's a no brainer that deserts can be freezing at night (maybe we should buy additional clothes later).

>"Can anyone get clothes like that?"
>Gash: "Sure, if you find the Wizard of the Sands."
Well if the Wizard of the Sands is just a foals tale, how did you get your wraps?

"I might rest up a little bit while we head to the settlement. Could you wake me up in a little while?"

You lay down on the floor of the Sip. There are some tarps laying around that make the wood more comfortable.
It should take about a day to get to the settlement, so that's enough time to rest. You take out your notebook and jot down a few things you thought would be important to keep documented.
After staring into the sky for a while, the movements of the Sip start to lull you to sleep.

"What is that?"

"That's not possible is it?"

"Wh-what if there are monsters?"
>Gash: "Don't worry, me'n Shahra can protect you."
Hmmm, it seems a little dangerous, but passing up the opportunity to study and explore what... looks like an ancient building goes against pretty much everything that Equipology stands for, even if you're more comfortable studying books than you are in the field.
Then again, you aren't the most cut out for adventuring into the unknown.
"I... I guess I can tag along. There's no real danger in that, right?"
>Gash: "That's the spirit! C'mon. Let's get a closer look."
He jumps out of his seat, and offers you help to get down. You decline, wanting to show them you can at least do this by yourself.
You trip and fall on your face.
.
.
.
The building looms over you. It's cracked, but it looks like it's made of a single stone. You can't see any signs of brickwork. It's a bit odd to you, but you've seen single stone buildings before. What you haven't seen is the ring of plants growing around the building.
"Are these plants native to this area?"
>Gash: "There aren't supposed to be any plants here."
Shahra sniffs some of them.
>Shahra: "They don't smell like anything I've ever come across either."
>Gash: "Let's forget about the plants and check out what's in the building. Maybe there's loot!"
And maybe there's monsters.
Gash strides through the entrance. You follow, with Shahra trailing behind you.
The interior is dark, and cold.
"Shouldn't it be warmer in here?"
>Gash: "Yeah, it should."
You continue walking forward.
You walk some more.
And more.

>Shahra: "Are you just realizing that now?"
"What do you mean?"
>Gash: "C'mon Shahra, be nice. Y'see Folk, sometimes old buildings have cool enchantments on them that make their insides bigger than their outsides. And you know what that means, right?"
"U-um, danger?"
>Gash: Well, that too, but also..."
He turns around and beams.
>Gash: "Magic. Loot."

"We ran across your building whilst travelling the badlands. We were curious and assumed it was abandoned. Seeing as it isn't, we'd be happy to introduce ourselves and ask your forgiveness for our tresspass and if there's anything you need that we can perhaps provide?"

We could ask you the same thing mr. . . . . . .

When did the room get red?

Hold the fuck up. Walk a bit backwards. This guy's too big.

Back up behind Shahra. She's our only hope if things get bad.

other than that, do what the others say.
>>
>>29150668
No. We shouldn't show any weakness, less this being of awesome power smites us.

Or we could, you know. Turn tail it out of there and get the fuck out.

"O-oh, well we uh, we..."
You clear your throat.
"We ran across your b-building whilst travelling the badlands. We were curious and assumed it was abandoned. Seeing as it isn't, we'd be happy to introdu-"
>?: "THIS BUILDING IS MY PRISON... RELEASE ME..."
"W-what?"
>?: "RELEASE ME, MORTAL..."
>Gash: "Nope, not doing that."
Gash why.
>?: "HOW DARE YOU DISOBEY ME!"
>Gash: "We don't even know who you are, and you're already bossing us around? Look dude, we're just here to loot the place, not to release whatever you are."
>?: "YOUR DEATH SHALL BE SLOW AND PAINFU-"
>Gash: "Cmon guys, let's keep looking for some stuff. I get the feeling there's nothing here worth taking."
>Shahra: "Yeah, I'm not sensing anything good either."
Gash sighs.
>Gash: "Might as well just leave then. This place is a bust."
>?: "... YOU'RE LEAVING?"
>Gash: "Yeah, later dude."
Shahra pokes you.
>Shahra: "You still alive or did you get scared to death?"
"N-NO I'M FINE! HONEST!"
>Shahra: "Sure, okay. Cmon, let's go."
You all start to head back the way you came.
>?: "...SO YOU AREN'T GOING TO RELEASE ME?"
>Gash: "Nope."
>?: "... WHY NOT?"
>Gash: "Because that seems like a terrible idea."
>?: "...... C'MON, PLEASE?"
>Gash: "Hmmmmmm... I dunnoooo."
You gulp.

"M-maybe if you told us who you are?"

>Gash: "This here changeling is Shahra, and this is Folk Tales."
>Shahra: "Hey."
What in the world is going on.
"H-hi."
>Nai: "SO... WHY ARE YOU ALL HERE? I DIDN'T THINK THIS PLACE WAS ACCESSIBLE TO... YOUR KIND..."
>>
>>29150806
He said please.
>>
>>29150806
My CYOA instincts tell me that releasing the entity is generally a horrible idea. Tantalizing but horrible. Chatting it up might be fun though.

"We got here while travelling so wherever here is, our kind can access it now. What happened to get you locked up, anyway? What would you do if freed?"
>>
>>29150806
>I DIDN'T THINK THIS PLACE WAS ACCESSIBLE TO... YOUR KIND..."
Nigga did you just say what I think you said? Do you want us to leave?
>>
>>29150806
Apparently, this placed just appeared out of nowhere along a well traveled path.
>>
>>29150806
>>29150815

>>
>>29150806

Ask the entity for its story
>>
>>29150806
We shoul ask him if he's a good god or a bad god. Gods have no reason to lie.
>>
>>29150806
Do you know anything about the Badlands? You seem like one of those, ancient "I shall bring damnation to the world - muhahahaha" kind of guy.
>>

They could always bend the truths and lies like Sejor.
>>

Why
>>
>>29150843
>>29150829
Well, only good people say please, so...
>>
>>29150806
Yeah. You should be careful mister. Who knows what dangerous critters will wander in here. Maybe something poisonous, or even acidic. Are giant scorpions a thing in the Badlands? I feel like they should be.
>>
>?: "...... C'MON, PLEASE?"
Pfffffffft ha hah ha ha! My fucking sides!
>>
>>29150806
Have we heard of any creature called Nai?
"What are you and why are you here?"
>>
>>29150806
Saaaaay.....You're not some megalomaniac who was imprisoned to rot for all of eternity for committing some terrible crimes in the far past are you?
Oddly specific of me, am I right?
>>
>>29150815
Yeah guy, maybe we found the polar opposite of Sejor.
>>
>>29150806
I already voted in the favor of letting him go, but here's some reasoning behind why
1. He almost certainly won't kill us. Why should he? We let him go. He'll probably help us in that case.
2. Just think about how long he's been in there. that poor guy.
3. No matter what he says, you probably won't let him out anyways because in every CYOA you little shits run around with your tails between your legs.
4. New NPC!
>>
>>29150890
That seems like a terrible idea anon. He seems like another Sejor, but slightly less stupid. But you know what? I'm in a whimsical mood. Free him a guess, fuck the consequences. I bet Gash would be all for setting Nairobi free while Shahra would be entirely against it. That's a 2-1 vote.
>>
>>29150906

>Nai: "OH. HOW'S This?"
>Gash: "Much better, thank you."
>Nai: "You're welcome."
>Gash: "So, you were saying?"
>Nai: "I was imprisoned here like all the others. They locked up everyone."
"Everyone?"
>Nai: "Yes. All the guardian spirits."
>Gash: "Who locked you up?"
>Nai: "YOUR kind did. Mortals."
>Shahra: "Wait, so why'd you get put in here?"
>Nai: "I don't remember. All my memories from that time are fogged."

"Do you know anything about the badlands?"
>Nai: "What are the badlands?"
>Gash: "It's where this building is, you dolt."
>Nai: "How did this prison get to these, 'Badlands'?"
"We don't know. Apparently this place just appeared out of nowhere along a well traveled path."
>Nai: "Are you sure? The only beings capable of teleportation on that scale are Leo and Len."
"Who?"
>Gash: "Look, we're getting a little off topic here. You want us to release you right?"
>Nai: "Yes."
>Gash: "Why?"
>Nai: "I wish to go home."
>Gash: "Where is your home?"
>Nai: "I..."
He sits in silence.
"Nai?"
>Nai: "I cannot remember the name. Somewhere dusty?"
"Dusty? Do you mean Dust Valley?"
>Nai: "Yes. That is what your kind called it."
>Shahra: "I dunno. I'm not buying it. How do we know you're not just evil and trying to trick us? What was with the whole, 'IM GOING TO KILL YOU', thing earlier?"
>Nai: "I thought it would scare you into releasing me. I have been in these binds for nearly a century."
>Shahra: "But are you good or bad?"
>Nai: "I was created to protect your kind. I would say that I am good, in your eyes."
>Gash: "Hmm. Can you excuse us for one moment?"
>Nai: "Of course."
He pulls you all in for a huddle.
>Gash: Well! I think we should let him go."
>Shahra: "I don't. I'm not a fan of 'releasing' anyone."

"When you refer to "protecting" our kind, does this protection involve in any way eating us, smooshing us, or in any other way ending us 'for our own good'? Because that would really put a damper on our future friendship if so."

Leaning toward releasing the eldritch horror, here.

I say we travel to the dust vally search for clues there to decide if we should release him.
Tell him as such
