I mean, I'd like to see a darker character... if they did it right. The problem is that 99% of writers don't understand how to get how to portray dark without it being horrifically forced. The balancing point with a dark character is that they have to be interesting and fun to watch in action, otherwise they're just junk. The second you have a moment that breaks the reader's immersion, they're liable to take a step back and out of it.

Let's use another FIM example: Chrysalis. Her appearance in ACW makes her arguably one of the most horrifying villains in the show: She impersonates you, traps you away while brainwashing your lover, sucks out their soul to feed herself, and has some of the decidedly rapey undertones that come with vampire-type characters.

But the thing is, she's well-written enough that none of that seems super-jarring when you're watching the episode. In fact, she's arguably so much fun to watch that she keeps you from taking a step back and realizing how retarded the whole plot is.

That's not a tie-in, that's an adaption. Those are two different things.

So how is this even going to work? Before now the comics and the show remained completely separate, so you never needed to read the comics to follow what was happening on the show. They were there as an extra for people who wanted it, but weren't necessary if you weren't interested. Shadowlock being the villain for the S7 premiere would create a lot of complications.

Because the comic is coming out before the episode, they'll both have to be written in such a way that assumes the audience is meeting this character for the first time. But if the comic is going to be canon to the episode we'd have a major disconnect, if the mane 6 all act like they all know who this guy is, the audience is going to feel lost, like there was an episode missing or something. But if they don't know who he is in the episode, then that would kill all the ambiguity around the comic's canon status, upsetting it's fans, yeah, I know nobody here thinks the comics are canon, but there are people that do. There was a reason why Maud was absent in Pinkie's Rockin Party Palooza, even though the characters made note that there was a sister that we haven't met yet.

My suspicion is they'll use this to explain the background of the something that will appear in the episode. Like, to use a random example, in the episode they need research on this antagonist so they haul out a tome and get some exposition from there - then this will show how they got that tome. It will add to the episode, but not be required to see it.

Solves both the "viewers need to read the comic" problem and lets the comics preserve their Schrodinger's canon status.

And it's gonna be standalone. The show is not gonna be lacking details in an episode just because some non-canon material happens to make use of certain elements, especially when I'm sure the majority of people watching MLP on the TV don't read the comics.

I think this is all just IDW trying to get things to be a little more consistent with the show when it comes to the overall story arcs, but it doesn't make it canon. The comics recently started including Starlight for example, because of course a comic is gonna contain things from it's source material, but that didn't magically make the comics canon, just like writing a fanfic that "ties into an episode" doesn't make that fanfic canon either.

I think the phrasing heavily implies it. If it were a comic-only villain or a literally who, it would have hyped him up as some mysterious new foe they have to face, likely not even giving his name. Instead, it's almost assuming you already know who the guy is.
