With a plan in mind, Holiday and Brownie get to work making the Belfry look as festive as possible. First to go up is the sign, which Holiday's magic and Brownie's wings easily lift to the roof. Brownie devotes her efforts to organizing the letters and making sure the colorful display is properly centered, while Holiday hangs up the wreaths since they're the easiest decoration to handle. But as the unicorn goes about her task, her unusually sober mind starts percolating with ideas about crystal decorations. Crystal hearts, crystal candy canes, maybe even a crystal tree!

"Holly!" Brownie calls down from the roof, interrupting the unicorn's thoughts.

Holiday pauses, squinting at the pink heart decoration. It may have just given her an idea... She focuses her magic, and the cold, prickly sensation of dark magic bubbles up her horn again. She tries to imagine it in a heart shape, and when she fires, she's pleased to see that it's starting to respond now; better yet, her Ember spell makes it ignite into eerie yet beautiful darkfire, much like her campfire two nights prior.

Several failed tree bases later, and Holiday is getting frustrated. She is getting a slightly better handle on shaping the crystal, but no matter how she tweaks her spell, she can't seem to change the color beyond a very slightly lighter shade of grayish-purple. Feeling her magic running on empty, Holiday throws her hooves up and just creates the best tree that she can. A ten foot, jagged pillar of triangular crystal erupts from the lawn of the inn, cracking and twisting as it shapes itself. Soon, Holiday feels lightheaded; her magic is exhausted.

Panting, Holiday starts pulling lights from the box and tying them around the makeshift tree. Before long, the somewhat dreary color of the crystal is drowned out by the glow of colorful lights. It might be a little while before Holiday can set the crystal heart atop the tree, though. She instead takes a step back to admire her work. All things considered, it's pretty impressive-looking!

Holiday looks up to the roof. The sign and the foff are in-place, but Brownie is gone. So is most of the daylight, actually: The grayish sky is now a deep pewter, and the street lamps have turned on.

After a brief investigation to make sure Brownie isn't laying behind the inn with a broken neck Spoiler: She isn't., Holiday decides to head inside. Even if she can't track down the dorky bat, Holiday can at least get a snack and check what time it is.
Upon entering the Belfry, Holiday sees that Brownie's father is at the front desk. Since the Sun is going down, the locals must be waking up. Holiday checks the clock on the wall; it's a few minutes before 5pm. Holiday feels her stomach twist nervously.
"Good evening." the batpony at the desk says to Holiday, sounding much more chipper now that he's coherent.
>"Hey, what's up? Has Brownie come through here lately?"
"She's in de kitchen." the stallion answers, pointing down the main hallway. "It's de last door on de right."

Holiday gestures to the tree outside the window.

Holiday's brow furrows at this.

Struggling to maintain her amicable facade, Holiday bows out to check on Brownie in the kitchen (and make sure the lights outside are on). The sweet smell of cinnamon tickles Holiday's snootle as she enters the kitchen, where Brownie is diligently bouncing back and forth between a few pots and a mixing bowl.

The bat squeaks curiously and turns around, showing Holiday her quite frankly adorable ensemble. "Oh, Holly!" she says in an excitable tone. Whisk in hoof, Holiday gets to work guarding the eggnog nog - that is, the custardy part of the drink that's cooked or emulsified and then flavored with a dash (or several) of bourbon and some nutmeg, before being chilled and mixed with the meringue (the 'egg' of the eggnog).
At least, that's what Holiday's dad taught her.

Holiday smiles, letting her mind wander for a few seconds. When she was a filly, her dad's peppermint bark was her favorite Hearth's Warming dessert. He would pour it in curved streams so when it hardened, it looked like a candy cane. Then he'd hook a piece onto the ribbon of each of Holiday's presents.
Good times.
Well, better times anyway.
Holiday shakes her head.

As the eggnog starts to steam, Holiday gets the thermometer ready. She knows how quickly liquids can simmer and then boil over, so she has to pay close attention.
