MLP movie is the only major 2D animation release in recent memory. Almost everything else has been 3D mediocre cashgrabs and horrendus sequels.

the movie winning a big award would trigger most of /co/ precisely because the herald that may lead a small comeback in 2D movie animation turns out to be the most unlikely show out there (mind you, a show for little girls that has gone beyond all limits of a franchise like that)

Nothing, because it won't. It might get Best Animated Feature, but not Best Picture. Best Picture is pretty much just for live-action films, and Best Animated Feature was created pretty much to segregate animation and live action (although, as stated earlier, Up and Toy Story 3 both got Best Picture nominations in spite of that, but neither won; the category was created after Beauty and the Beast got a Best Picture nomination).

Animation is universally regarded by the Academy as trite entertainment for children, and in no way a serious art form. It will never happen.
