Presumably, yes. Like, basically the element of magic is the only one worth a damn regarding the elements of harmony.
Twilight's cm being magic might also make her a better choice, though celestia and luna ought to have more experience.
The show doesn't really go deep enough into certain concepts and, all things considered, the episode wasn't thought out all that well.

What I would like to know is what the end game was for Celestia. Because the plan doesn't really make much sense unless it's another one of those omniscient Celestia playing 4D chess schemes. They give up their magic, Twilight hides, and let's say Tirek doesn't find out. Then what? Tirek would just keep harvesting magic until he would eventually get more powerful than Twilight so he could then stomp her to the ground? Why didn't they step in immediately and wrecked Tirek when he was still fairly weak?
Fuck the S4 finale man, it's the fucking worst of the whole show.

It's clear from the episode Discord knew about the keys (he was the one that pointed the mane 6 toward specific journal entries).

If I had to guess, she was told not to tell her friends so she would stay away from them and not get captured when they were to set up the trade later.

Season 4 finale makes my head hurt. The DBZ battle scene makes me retch.

At least Tirek was pretty cool.

Celestia and Luna are very powerful. I'm not sure Twilight had really shown strong battle magic before that point either so choosing her to fight Tirek seems odd when Tirek was such a beast. Celestia and Luna had experience fighting

Think of it as a desperation plan. None of them knew what to really do, so I think they just wanted to buy time until one of them did come up with a plan. The four of them together couldn't take him on either

Let's assume all the princesses are equally capable of wielding the alicorn magic. That is to say, none of them would be able to control it properly until they had time to practice, like we saw with Twilight.

Since it is necessary to buy some time to get used to the magic, Celestia and Luna can't take it because Tirek is coming for them. Even if they run, Discord will track them down for Tirek.

This means Cadance or Twilight would have to take it, since they would have the most time to become used to the magic while Celestia and Luna delay Tirek with confusion and an opportunity to gloat. Of course it's impossible to keep the existance of Cadance and/or Twilight a secret forever, that was never the goal. Just long enough for them to be a match for Tirek.

However, the princesses also mentioned that Twilight in particular was better suited for this plan, which means the initial assumption could be wrong. If Celestia believed Twilight would adjust to the extra magic faster than Cadance, then Twilight would be the logical choice.

The real mystery is why Cadance stayed in the throne room. I'm pretty sure Tirek couldn't know about her, she could have gone to hide and bought Twilight even more time, as long as he found out about Cadance first. Missed opportunity there.

word of her being a princess hadn't spread far and wide since she didn't have anything to be a princess of at the time
I'd have to watch the eps again, but I'm sure he knew of Cadance and said something to acknowledge this
he only found out about Twilight because of the stained glass window showing that she had become a princess

it's probably good to assume that Tirek stayed underground while he built up his strength, so he didn't even hear about Twilight

what I want to know is WHO let him out?
how was he able to escape?
you'd think that with Celestia's clairvoyance, she'd have seen it coming and taken measures to make sure he didn't escape

I don't remember Twilight being the element of magic or even her previous roles in saving Equestria ever being stated as a reason she was better suited to the role than the other Princesses.

And what was the plan? Just buying time? Even then it doesn't seem like the soundest of strategies, Tirek was on the loose and there was no guarantee either way that things would turn out well. In fact, before the box they went as far down South as they could go. I don't think they knew what was in the box either, Discord had a little thought of what could be in it but even he didn't bother with it after joining Tirek
