The better, if the explanation would hit him really hard such as:
- there is no other way, than becoming greedy
- he will outlive most of Ponyville denizens, before he grow up
- because Equestria (horse territory at least) lacks of "some mineral shit" which allows dragons to grow up
- because lack of dragons makes negative influence on dragon's upbringing
