2nd Album info:

>What is this, though?
The 2nd /MLP/ Plays album, that’s what! Following the success of the first one, we decided that the world needs another. Like before, it will be a compilation album from the musicians of /mlp/. There is no specific genre that has to be adhered to, but there will be more guidelines to follow this time.

>What are the guidelines?
This time around, it’s been decided that the music for this album has to be pony related. “But what what does that mean!?” you may be wondering. Well, here is what we mean:
Songs need to be original or redone covers based off of the below conditions. It may be but is not limited to:
•Cover/remix of the music from the show.
•An original that is based off of a riff/motif/recognizable theme from the show
•Original piece that uses samples from the show (probably more than just one gasp at the end. Should really be part of the song)
•Original songs with pony related lyrics, like "Waifu Blues" or "All Ponies Must Be Perfect" from the last album.
•Redoing the music and lyrics to be pony related. Mr. Bones's Wild Ride (Hotel California Parody) from the last album is a good example.
•Includes /mlp/ related maymays/jokes/culture.
•No singing over instrumentals of other artists’ songs. "I Am Awesome" is an example. It would, however, be OK if the instrumental was redone.

>Are there any other guidelines?

/a/ has a music thread too, and they've been active about as long as we have.

Maybe we could team up with them and /mu/ and do a 4chan Plays.

except most other boards hate us, so it'll probably never happen

I was just wondering if the intervals were correct for common practice era counterpoint, and whether the voices were too close together, and if it was okay to bar 4 and end a canon with a chord progression

The part circled in pink sounded kinda awkward to me, but it is probably fine. I added an alternative solution anyway.

The part circled in red sounds really off since the voices are a second apart. I highly recommend changing it. Moving the D to an E would be better.

The voice leading in the chord-section could be smoother, and in the last chord change the voices are not resolved properly. I Could explain in greater detail if you want.

>circled in red sounds really off since the voices are a second apart
Do you mean the whole melody, or the specific notes?

>The voice leading in the chord-section could be smoother, and in the last chord change the voices are not resolved properly. I Could explain in greater detail if you want.
Please do! Also, I thought an sus4 chord on the I was a common subdominant?

>Do you mean the whole melody, or the specific notes?
Just the last note of the upper voice. When it leaps to D at the end of the measure it is a second above the other voice.
Since the rest of the piece is mostly thirds and sixths the second really stands out as a dissonant interval, and it doesn't add anything to the harmony either.

If you instead let the top voice go to E on the last beat it will be a third above the C in the lower voice, more in tune with the rest of the piece. Furthermore it would imply a C major chord, the dominant of F major, a chord which is quite useful in this kind of music.

>>I Could explain in greater detail if you want.
>Please do!
Ok, I'm not a teacher or anything but I'll try to explain the important parts without rambling too much.
The two last chords are C7 and F, the dominant seventh and tonic, great chords to end a piece with! The dominant, especially as a seventh-chord, has the strongest pull toward the tonic in traditional harmony. However, one reason why that is has to do with how individual notes of the chord want to resolve.

You see, the dominant seventh is an unstable chord. The interval between the third and the seventh is a tritone, a very dissonant interval. The dissonance of the tritone wants to resolve in such a way that the third of the dominant moves upwards to the root of the tonic, and the seventh of the dominant goes downwards to the third of the tonic.

By resolving the dissonance this way we get the strongest and most pleasant transition between the dominant and tonic chord.

>>29004409
>Also, I thought an sus4 chord on the I was a common subdominant?
First of all, that's a sus2, not a sus4.
But no, sus 4 is not common on the subdominant as far as I know. In fact, you can't make a subdominat sus4 in a major key without using an accidental. (Your piece in in F major, a subdominant sus4 would have the notes Bb, Eb and F - Eb is not part of the key F major.)

Sure, you can use an accidental if you really want it, but it will probably stand out in the context of this piece. In some more modern music, like pop for instance, I can see it work a bit better.

Also, while it will probably work fine in minor keys, I don't think it is particularly common in traditional music. As far as I know sus4 is usually used on the dominant chord to prolong the dominant harmony.

>>
>>29010473
Nah, I misread your post and totally missed the fact that you were talking about the I chord. I thought you wanted to make a sus4 out of the IV chord, so some comments in my reply weren't even relevant.

A sus4 on the I chord is perfectly fine in front of the dominant (though I can't say whether or not it is common or not in older music), but there is a couple of problems in this case.
As it is now it feels more like a Bbsus2, mostly because you put a Bb in the bass, but voice leading also plays a part. I think you can actually make it work, but I'll need to try a few things first and figure out how to best explain it. I'm a bit busy at the moment but I'll get back to you when I can.

>Has a song been completed yet for the upcoming album?
As far as I'm aware, no.

>How many songs do you have in the works so far?
The only thing I've been working on was QT Mk Crusaders: a song written by Dzahlus about the eponymous cutie mark crusaders.
Production's stopped for the time being. I think we need to figure out what we're doing with it.

There's Streets, which Sound Guy's heading. Needs lyrics (I believe several Anons are doing that but I don't know to what degree of success) and it needs more work on structure and an ending.
On top of that, I still need to record for what's going to be the chorus.

Continuing, there's also No Hooves (a heavy metal song worked on by Anoridan and... Engie?), Daydream wanted to do a MTC parody and... anything else that comes along.

>Do you need anybody to help with something?
