If you remember the last chapter of Half-Life 2, you were supposed to race the Combine to a boat named "Borealis" that was supposed to contain advanced portal technology (the reason why the combine invaded Earth). It's an old Aperture Science ship, and that was supposed to be the junction between the Half-Life and Portal stories.
