Although I enjoy the Gothic/Lolita fashion line, I find it irritating that Gothic/Lolita character development is 99.99% of the time reflected in wearing the fashion. You can be Gothic without wearing the duds, it helps you inseminate the gloom to non grim folk.

The inverse is frustrating as well, that people assume you are Gothic for wearing the fashion. Just because someone is wearing a sequined pink tracksuit with 1970's Blazing Red thick frame sunglasses doesn't give me the right to assume that they are either A: Gay as Holy Hell B: Fashionable as Holy Hell C: A superhero.


The worse are the people who wear the fashion with no respect to the mindset, and those people who "Go Goth" after they spill their milk and get grounded so they are "Lol God isn't real, Fuk u Government and Mom, I'm going to go listen to Green Day and Cut my Toenails to make a Star of David so I can summon Madara Uchiha from my Death Note book"

the mindset is pretty much defeatism and comfort in failure with bleak outlook.

You know, typical adult stuff, just painting it black and writing "Here be gloom".

Typically most people move on from failure and ignore the bleakness of Reality; they move on and find happiness in trite things. This is normal human progression, and welcome in society. The Gothic mindset doesn't really move on from the bleak, and instead learns to love and spread it instead. The idea of a Man's decaying flesh revealing his skull doesn't become Dread, it becomes Art and Beauty.

I guess in a way its escapism by trying not to be optimistic or cheery, and to a fault that's a personality problem that only grows worse in the company of other misanthropes. However those with the mindset can also point to those who move on from disappointment and bleakness and say "No, you are the escapists not willing to accept the Grim truth."

It's funny to say, but if you are over 25 and are still "Gothic", you are most likely a misanthrope, just another "scene kid", or have some deep rooted personality issues.

However, if you are over 25 and you are overly optimistic and cheery, the same can be said, sans the misanthropy.

It's best to smile occasionally at Dawn, and listen to crickets in the Dusk.
