Pretty much everything Starlight's said. I won't go back and make a perfect quote, but a few times now, her incredibly awkward "sarcasm" with Twilight made me cringe

the thing is they did a good job of characterizing Shimmer as being a good person who made some shitty choices and then dealt with atoning for them. People didn't trust her for a long time after she fucked up the school.

You're not wrong, but I would like to add that circumstances differ between the atonement phases of the two. Sunset was aggressive and intimidating to everybody at CHS, and all of the students were present to witness her rise and fall. It made sense that she wasn't readily forgiven by anyone except the Humane 6, who forgave her by Twilight's example.

Whereas with Starlight, only her villagers, the Mane 6, and Spike were aware of her nefarious plans, and only Twilight and Spike saw the extent of the damage she was willing to inflict with the alternate timelines. Again, the Mane 6 forgive her by Twilight's example, but there wouldn't be a reason for the rest of Equestria to hate her because they stayed within their own timeline and had no idea what she was up to. That's why it may appear that she was forgiven more easily.

From this perspective, Sunset actually has more in common with Trixie than she does with Starlight.

I wish that when Tirek consumed Discord's magic that Tirek didn't know how to do anything with it and shit just started happening, flying pigs, like classic Discord stuff but all warped, the pigs are like half tirek and merged into trees and stuff. and he was in like intense pain, and the pain made him even angrier. and Discord could say some timelord shit about like not having to feel the depths of infinity inside himself and what a nice relief it is to not have to dominate the millions of screaming voices. and like it was his plan the whole time to have his magic get taken and he was just having fun up to that point. But he truly thought his magic would be enough to render Tirek not a threat, and was shocked and scared by the fact he waited too long and Tirek was just a more chaotic and rage filled threat than before, then maybe they could even work in the same big lazor foight and chest shit at the end.

Discord is essentially a god. He is more powerful than any other being in the show (when they are not enhanced by any sort of "harmony" powers, which seem to trump anything else in existence). He can bend reality to his will. I don't care how powerful Tirek is, I think it was poor writing for him to be able to overpower Discord so easily.

The biggest reason is because Twilight wasn't there to be a sperg next to Sunset. Twilight is like a helicopter parent. If she can be there and manipulate you, she will. That's why Starlight's biggest personal developments have taken place without Twilight, because friendship can't be learned from a book. It's why Celestia just throws her into a chaos storm and goes "learn something". Sunset got the Starlight treatment, but without guidance. She had to figure out how to be a good person on her own, and that made her development that much stronger. Starlight is still pretty ballsy, but her finale appearance really taught her some lessons because the mane 6 were all cocoon'd and couldn't bitch to her about things.
