Damn, Brotherhooves Social dropped a lot. Didn't like it myself and that combined with Where the Apple Lies which was good but made Big Macs character even worse I can't believe I used to like him.

They really fucked over his personality in S5 and S6.

While not necessarily relevant for the /mlp/ rankings, on Reddit it was knocked off the top spot last year by Crusaders of the Lost Mark. Then this year CotLM fell to #13 and Return of Harmony regained #1.

So, in theory a really well-beloved episode combined with hype and recency bias could do it. Maybe if they manage to knock the series finale out of the park.

Here's the correct combined episode ranking so far with 112 Anons voting 20030 times and 36 Anons contributing lists.

I'm not sure how, but when I manually counted the IPs in the All Our Ideas csv it turned put there were a lot more than I had been getting with the macro I had made to count them. Even odder, when I use the advanced filter in Excel to count unique records for IPs I got different totals in the sorting workbook and raw CSV with the same data. Using countif with the IPs showed there were in fact a lot more IPs not counted, so this only affects weight but it was still odd so I thought I should say something.

I remember people saying they liked how Apple Bloom was characterized in it and that she was easy to sympathize with, and I certainly agree with that. The bad in it is the weird humor and, for some, the way Applejack was characterized contradicting their "voice of reason" idea they have for her. It was quite a while ago, but thinking back, I think that was more well-liked when it initially came out than it is now. I think people forgot all the good in it, after all this time.

*The value of the maximum rank in each list format sample was
subtracted by each individual episode's rank in that same sample to determine ranking points for the episodes.
Additionally half the points are from the voting format after scaling the votes to equal half the total ranking points.
In the All Our Ideas formula, the formula (wins + 1)/((wins + 1) + (losses + 1)) is used to determine the score of each episode.
To get the combined score: For each method the rank of an episode is multipled by the number of Anons participating in it
Then they’re added together and the total is subtracted from the greatest rank total to get the ranking points for final ranking.

It's the allourideas sorter encouraging casual fans to vote. They have poorly defined impressions of most episodes and identify most with what they saw when the show was a big fad. One-off voting results in people choosing between two episodes based on name value and vaguely defined feelings.

Using the traditional method forces you to consider each episode, look things up or even rewatch them. It gives context for all your votes when you're forced to decide between your favourites and have to rank episodes repeatedly.

S1 and S2 have been at the top even with the traditional method post-S5. The lead is exaggerated no doubt, but the general opinion has always been that the early show was better.
I'd also count in the possibility that since S6 had some of the worst episodes ever (Pranks, Carts and Day Off), people look more back at the older episodes, the rose tint becoming stronger.
I agree that the allourideas sorting is imperfect, but it's easier to actually get some opinions that way. 26 more episodes increases the amount of sorting by a lot and there simply isn't enough people that give a shit to get a solid ranking just from the traditional method, considering that we only got 36 lists.
Allourideas is also prone to abuse, all it would take is a handful of autists purposely voting for certain episodes only for a couple hours to skew the results

It's actually surprising. I studied it a bit, because the 800+ battles seemed like a lot, but the sorter is actually really efficient, the number of comparisons needed grows very fast and there are needed at least 852 battles to sort all the episodes until season 6 plus the 4 EqG movies.

I still don't get all the hate for 28 Pranks Later. Could you maybe elaborate if you're still here?
I suppose I have to rewatch it, but from what I remember, the characters except Dash were pretty well written (especially Pinkie). I was also pretty happy they finally did something with the pranking again and I also thought it to be beter executed than Mare Do Well since they at least tried talking with Dash first. Even the "Don't prank Fluttershy" thing can be explained by Dash being reluctant back in Griffon the Brush Off, although it would've been better if Pinkie brought that up. It's not great or anything, but I didn't really find it that bad either.

First anon you replied. I think it was, by far, the worst episode the show has ever had. There wasn't a single thing I liked in it. Nothing at all.

Rainbow was completely unlikeable, her pranks had nothing to do with her mostly-innocent pranks in the griffon episode, here she was simply a fucking bitch. The thing with Fluttershy was specially awful, it outright meant that in the other episode she didn't listen to Pinkie, she was just waiting to prank Fluttershy when Pinkie wasn't around. She knew it would "hurt" Fluttershy, and she did it again, just for her own amusement, that literally means that she doesn't care about Fluttershy at all, and she was just pretending when she acted as her friend. It's just terrible.

It wasn't better than MMDW in any way. It's simply false that they tried to stop her here, Pinkie's talk was way less persuasive than her talk in the other episode (a talk that didn't even work, so everyone should already know that just Pinkie wasn't going to be enough), and the other ponies not only didn't try to stop her, they dared her to step up her game.

Finally, MMDW was stupid because the other ponies punished Rainbow because she was a hero, which is a ridiculous reason to punish someone. The writer here tried to "fix" that making Rainbow a character completely unlikeable to justify the punishment. Turning a character into a piece of shit for the sake of the plot is, imo, way worse than what MMDW did.

I hate this episode. I hope this fucker don't write ever again. Unfortunately it's unlikely since he's friends with Miller, but I'm not watching more of the shit he writes from now on. Fuck him.
