Can we have a plushmakers thread? It will soon be Christmas and I'm planning to buy my very first pony plush to celebrate my first year of horsefuckery. Any advice?
Bonus points for West European plushmakers.
>>
>>28911568
hand made or mass produced?
>>
>>28911672
Preferably hand made.

It probably won't get there in time for christmas likely. Hopefully that's not an issue.

Any particular pony you're looking for?
>>
>>28911717
Are €200/€300 ($211/$317) enough for something decent? I can spend a maximum of €500 ($530) though.
>>28911762
That's not in issue. I don't know yet precisely. Ponk or maybe Twilight. It'll depend of the quality of the mane.

Yeah, you can totally get something in that price range there, depending on how big you want. Giant lifesized, probably not. But like a good 18in one, should totally be able to.

I actually have a spare ponka I was planning on finishing up for the season here. If you're interested in it, would totally be up to discussing it more with you.

To be fair, her prices were lower when I got on her commission list for Fluttershy (one year, 4 months ago) and Cheerilee (5ish months ago).

She's certainly raised her prices, as back when she made Fluttershy she was barely breaking even (as if you counted her hours as a min wage job, she would make more doing that then spending the time on plushies).

qt here. I really don't know how people ship big pone overseas. I checked the usual postal services here (ups, fedex, dhl) and the $70 domestic shipping turns into more like $700 internationally.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this subject? It's a shame only being able to ship domestically but I'm not going to chance it with some random unknown carrier on a cargo ship.

That fucking sucks.

I traveled out of state by 5 hour car trip and took a cuddle size and one of my life sizes with me for Thanksgiving. Managed to sneak in both without being seen, bounded up the stairs carrying one in a bag and the other in a big box. I was busted by my mother taking the life size out of the big box I managed to sneak in. Nothing was said as I held this big pony with sexy stockings with little bows in my arms. I slept spooning my life size in one of the guest bedrooms. Woke and wrapped her back in the sheet and put her back in the box.

This right here is why I'll never spend the money on a life size plush. There's just no way to keep them clean without a ton of constant effort.
I have to wash my blanket that I cuddle with every few weeks because it doesn't smell clean anymore, and that's just something I can throw in the washing machine.
I can't imagine having to devote hours every few weeks to carefully cleaning plush so I don't destroy it.

Then I also couldn't jizz on it because that would fuck it up too. So really, what's the point.

Also, fuck spending $1000 and waiting a year to get one.

it's not much different than an actual relationship
if you want something to last, then you have to put effort into it

if you really want a plush and NOT spend the money on a commission, then I'd suggest making one yourself

>>28920930 has all the information you'll need to start
all you need is to put in the time and effort and a couple hundred bucks for materials (depending on the size you want)
>>

I haven't had to use the cleaning guide yet. I just wipe my horses down with a warm, damp wash cloth every couple weeks. So far, so good. Eventually they'll need a real cleaning (Which desu I'm just going to take the stuffing out, wash, re-stuff with new stuffing) but that ain't gonna be a frequent thing.

I have a bear I've had for 20 years (since I was 1) and while he doesn't look brand new, he doesn't look nearly that bad. He's been washed more than a few times, but I think a lot comes down to whether he just slept with the bear, or dragged him along everywhere.

Honestly, back then the fanon plush industry was just starting, and there was good reason for people to believe it would fizzle out within a year or two.

Still don't see how someone would spend 5 GRAND, but still.

Who made the first viable LS ponies? Agatrix?
>>
>>28951618
dozens of lifesizers were made by a variety of artists well before agatrix. some were good, many were not so good. This thread just has its favorite few makers.

What is your definition of viable?
>>
>>28951638
Eh, good quality I guess. Not just in build but aesthetics. For all I know >>28940010 might be built like a tank, could throw it in a wood chipper and be fine, but it's not the most amazing plush looks wise.
>>
>>28951618
>Who made the first viable LS ponies?
I'd say Bladespark started the first decent, lasting (and dirt cheap back then) ls standard with her standing pattern, numerous commissions from 2011.

>Eh, good quality I guess. Not just in build but aesthetics
2013 and earlier bigger pone plush of the quality we know today was pretty rare to see, so what I linked was mostly great at the time.

imo somewhere around as big as the first link can pass for a LS.

Same anon, posting a update.

Was able to work with some scrap fabric from old shirts.
I'm not as horrible as i thought i was going to be at first, i'm able to make some surprisingly clean stitches on small scraps.

Anyways, i have a idea on how i want to make flutters, some things i have seen other anons talking about, and what they would like to see.

I have a idea how i could put in one of those build a bear heart beat things in her chest, and make it replaceable with a simple hidden zipper.

I already have a pattern made, it may be a month before i start working on her, any suggestions that i can plan? The pattern is only 17in, i want to make a lrge size so i can fit in lewd.
>>
>The pattern is only 17in, i want to make a lrge size so i can fit in lewd.
unless you're Chinese, you're gonna want to go a minimum of 24" tall from hoof to top of head if you're using an insert
if you're making a built in removable insert, you might get away with it

>tfw you have literally everything needed to make a LS lewd plush, except for the time
god, I hate not having time to myself
>>
>>28967790
I know, that's why i said i wanted to make a larger size of the pattern i made.

I'm thinking scaling it up to 28in, just to be safe.

To be honest the only reason i'm making it lewd is so i can sell it, i don't even own a Sugar Star or Mary.

I kinda messed up when i said >i want to make a lrge size so i can fit in lewd.
I meant i wanted to make a larger size so i can fit in lewd.

Basics are checking prices, size, and maybe even what materials they use. Best case is to contact your desired plushmaker so that you two can work out the specifics of your commission.
Even better is if you can find reviews from past clients to determine if the plushies they make are of good quality and can last for a while.

So I'm kind of pressed for time and a cheap chinese pone from Amazon wouldn't get to me soon enough... are Build-a-Bear plushes generally OK? I'm doing the Secret Santa and I just wanna know if it'd be a worthwhile puchase.

>>28974376
They're very huggable but I hate 'brushable' hair. Stuff like in OP is okay because it looks comfy but BaB gets tangled and ratty and looks like it would be itchy. If you're confident enough making a mane you could chop it off and customize one?
>>
>>28974403
Do you think you can use hair products in BaB pony hair? like hairspray or hair glue? cause lemme tell ya, that stuff holds like cement.
>>
>>28974403
>>28974414
I bought a Twilight for my neice a while back and she loved it to bits, but I figure an adult might be less enthused because of the mane and sadly, I don't have the skill to outright replace it. Good idea on the styling though, that's something I might be able to do. But would that reduce snuggability?
>>
>>28974438
IDK, ive never done it before. but if it reacts like human hair, it should just become stiff and less likely to frizz. i used to do ballet and during recitals my mom would spray my bun with the stuff, and the closest i can equate what the hair felt like is human nails, but softer? its been like ten years since i used the stuff. idk how much itll deacrease for you.
>>
>>28974468
I would think hairspray or other products would make the hair kind of sticky. And it can still get messed up by cuddling. It helps hold against movement and wind, not physical things rubbing or bumping against it.
>>
>>28974485
glad someone has a better understanding of hair products than I do!
>>
>>28974468
>>28974485
The hair is probably like a sort of plastic and not actual hair though right? Could probably use a heat lamp and pins to style it if that's the case. That way it doesn't get sticky or anything.
>>
>>28974506
Hair will surely be synthetic.

Expository Writing?

Still do it before stuffing though. Also use a hoop and stabilizer if you plan to hand embroider the eyes.

Something a lot of plush folk do is just appliqueing the eyes. Cut the pieces that make up the eye, arrange them and sew on around the edges. Boom. You're done. Significantly quicker and easier than hand embroidering each eye.

Honest question: Why do people get OC's over canon characters?

I'd think most people would want to go for the Mane 6 or some other show ponies...
>>
>>28979881
>>28980562
Got any pics? What troubles specifically are you having?

>>28982600
Short answer: autism.
>>
Do you guys stream anymore? Do you have any links to people who have? I would love to get some first hand info on plush making.
>>
>>28982600
If it's a well known OC, like Little Pip, Blackjack, or even Nyx (yes, I hate her, but she is well known), it's the same reason people get the Mane 6 made. They're popular characters that they love.

If they get their own personal OC made that's only been seen as their forum user image, and has only been in their self insert fan fic, then idk, i'm not in that mind set.

I want to get a few more LS canon characters, but at some point I'd want a LS Little Pip. Fallouts been a favorite franchise of mine since about 2008, and MLP since early 2011. She a cute and represents both (plus there isn't really a market for LS Death class).
>>

>>
>>28982684
Don't have any pictures right now, I'm having trouble with the eyes and getting them to look right on the head, that and patterning in general. After I'm finished with this one I think I'm going back to small plushies for a while, at least until I can save enough for a better machine
>>
>>28985086
Oh, also, how do you hid your knots fro from sewing on the ears, mane and head? I've been covering them with the mane but that feels sloppy
>>
>>28985143
What do you mean by hide the knots? When you do the loop tie off knot at the seam area they should be almost completely unnoticeable, then you just stab the need in at the same point and bring it out at some point of the plush, pull tight, but not too tight and snip it close to the plush and the thread with hide inside. It gives you a more secure knot and hides the extra thread anchor in the plush.
>>
>>28984960
The reason there's such a wait time is because there is way more demand than supply. Not hard to figure out.
>>
>>28982833
The popular OCs like Little Pip and such I can understand.

But the random OCs that people come up with for themselves I just don't understand...

Question for everyone:
What is the largest MLP plush ever made?

The largest I've heard of were 65" laying ones...

>>
>>28990981
They probably have double that or more in savings plus a dependable income if making that sort of 'extra stuff' purchase, which was the case for me and probably the case for most of the other multi-ls owners. If they didn't well.. whatever, your money your life!

Then again, most FT working people easily spend 1-4k+ annually on extra stuff, including vacation and travel costs. Enjoying life gets more expensive with age...

Aurora World plushies. Different sizes to choose from. Not as good looking as 4DE

Also the chinese knockoffs that look not so good. Name is Oly Factory for those.

I'm thinking of making a Derpy plush to sell and trying to decide what accesories to add. I'm thinking either a scarf, socks, and earmuffs or a Mailmare outfit with a little magnetic letter. Which would you all personally prefer to buy and cuddle? It'd all be removable so i guess itd be more for display but eh.

someone should try putting some LED's in a plush that make her blush when you hug her. I would happily pay extra for that.

There is this that I have seen people use in fursuits, I'm just not sure how one would keep them in place on the cheeks or how they'd access the battery pack.

Hmm neat.

>how one would keep them in place
Assuming you have maybe 4+ led's on a small chip or strip, could just sew over it tightly, or make a few small holes to use. I think something much lower profile and easy to make like in this video would work well and not cause the cheek to feel different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aeegCeiqtY
>>
>>28991122

Yep. I spend probably around 5k a year on traveling.
>>
>>28991839
The Chinese knockoffs on eBay are definitely rather good. Not as good as 4DE, but way better than any of the other official plush brands.
Their Flutterbat looks great, in particular.
>>
>>28992421
Ultimate LS plush idea:

•LED's for light-up blush
•BAB beating heart box for heartbeat sounds
•Heated wiring for warmth (just like those heated blankets)
•Soundbox for pony quotes (i.e. when you hug Fluttershy, she says: "Ohh... my..."
>>
bump
>>
>>28993074
I've thought about the heated blanket inside a plush thing. As long as the electrical fire risk is nearly nonexistent (as in not buying the cheaper ones) then I'd do it. Could have a little hidden pocket in the tail where you can retrieve the cord.
>>
>>28993074
I'd like to see eyelids. Not sure how they'd do it though, maybe as a magnetic accessory, maybe a thin slit along the tops of the eyes where there's a minky eyelid with a firm backing so you can just move it down and up.

It's almost creepy waking up in the middle of the night, and the ls pone laying on me has been staring at me the entire time, she doesn't sleep, she just watches me sleep.

Is that plush stream that >>28988423 mentioned
happening tonight? I might go ahead and run one myself if it's not.

Just a fair warning: If I streamed tonight there possibly wouldn't be any actual sewing. Most of the stream will be me rambling and trying to figure out how to create a head pattern mostly from scratch based on reference drawings, assuming I don't pass out from lack of sleep in the middle. If there's any interest I'll probably start around an hour from now.

If you're trying to use monitor capture and running win 7, 8, or 10, turn off aero in settings > video> disable aero. Aero will slow it down horribly. Otherwise just use window capture.

If you're only trying to run a camera, try reducing the resolution of the camera or reduce the output resolution in settings > video > resolution downscale

His newest LS is alright, i think he could have done a better job on the tail though given his experience.

he's done some good work but the quality is inconsistent from time to time which is why i won't commish him until it gets more consistent. see image. I dunno if he keeps trying new patterns or what.
>>
>>28994645
I would recommend against commissioning even if he did fix them because of his shifty business practices.
>>
>>28994667
Oh I don't plan to, it was more of pondering a hypothetical situation sort of thought, but I don't think i've lurked enough to know of this shiftyness you speak of. The thread is almost up so.. if you wanna go down that road, up to you.
>>
>>28994667

Can you elaborate?
>>
>>28994685
Has tons of people that have waited years in line and paid but constantly seems to be pushing new commissions to the front to get money according to his journal. He can't refund those that have waited forever so they have no choice but to wait for a plush that may never come or just accept the loss.

Like if you're that poor, get a job with a stable income instead of one that pays less than minimum wage and pay back the people you will not be able to get to in this lifetime.

Armchair response answered nothing, I'm asking if you can cite your claims, not trying to protect dbs.

>Has tons of people that have waited years in line and paid

> pushing new commissions to the front
which newer commissions were finished before older ones?

>can't refund
who asked for refunds and didn't get refunded?

You stupid fuck. I was pointing to his commission back log, not protecting Doublebackstitch.

May Luna's futa cock piss all in your face.
>>
>>28995124
You seem upset.
I know what you were pointing to.
I was saying I'm not trying to protect DBS by asking for citation. Why would I say you were? lol what?
I would ask for proof of claims no matter the artist in question is what I meant.

So, do you actually know anything for a fact that I asked about, or was your post just retyping anecdotes that you read somewhere else?

If you don't know then you don't know. But show proof if you think anyone should take your claims as fact. If not, it's not wise for anyone to consider your post completely factual and just assume which parts were.

Personally I reckon:
- Twilight has a Celestia plush
- Scootaloo has a Rainbow Dash plush
- Vinyl and Octavia have plushies of each other (and probably the same for Lyra and Bon-Bon)
- Spike has a Rarity plush
>>

Actually wait, now I stop and think about it, didn't Spike have a Rarity plush in one of the S6 episodes? I think it was during a train scene (was it the Thorax episode?).

Spike has a rarity doll in the show, much like Dash has a Spitfire doll / action figure in the show.
