Im 2 episodes away from finishing season 2. (Yeah, I'm new; Yeah, I'm slowpoke; inb4 newfag)

So far, I really like just about everything about the show, except for a couple characters and a few moments that were too girly for me.

But as for what I like:

The animation is nice to look at, very stylized and colorful.

The character designs are all distinct from each other and match their equally distinct personality traits, with big expressive eyes and similar but different body shapes.

The lore and backstory is surprisingly deep, which I love for a show set in sort of a fantasy type world.

There's a lot of examples of world building, just seeing how the mechanics of Equestria work is fascinating.

I'm actually a big appreciator of good voice acting, and the VAs are definitely great for this series, able to display such a wide variety of emotion while still sounding adorable.

The writing can be a bit hand-fisted and/or cheesy at times, but the rest of the time it's very clever and honestly pretty hilarious. And I appreciate a show that can work in a moral without it feeling too forced. Sometimes it's kind of a stretch or the moral's a little weak, but the attempt being made gets points in my book.

I'm a sucker for a good song number, it's a weakness of mine. And fortunately, the song numbers in FiM are all pretty great so far, my favorite one probably being Pinkie's Smile Song; it's disgustingly happy and I love it.

I really love the overarching story as well. So many shows decide to go for the "each episode has it's own story, but everything goes back to normal next week", and for some, that works. But to make an ongoing storyline both entertaining and engaging is not easy, so I approve.

Something this show does that kind of reminds me of other shows like Adventure Time do is that it'll introduce characters in the background, or have them be side characters, but then later on, they'll get their own episode, or have an impact on the story. (cont.)

Besides the show itself, the fan created content is really great as well. Ive played so many fangames and romhacks, and seen so many really good fanmade videos and parodies, it's really cool.

Conflict? Ambition? I've often given this thought.

When was the last time the ponies had a goal that was outside their reach? Dash became a Wonderbolt, and I've read that to be a professional athlete it takes ten hours a day of practice. Of course, Dash doesn't put in that time and only shows up to social functions, so Dash being a Wonderbolt doesn't matter. The insurmountable hurdles to her being a Wonderbolt don't matter.

And Rarity set up not one, but two outrageously popular boutiques. The conflict of one episode was that the Canterlot boutique was TOO successful. Yet she spends no time running them, and the hurdles of having them mean nothing.

The show has gotten to the point where it's just changing things, handing out victories, and reforming villains, to the point where I have no idea what season 7 will be about. Our cast of characters have no life goals that haven't been fulfilled. There are no villains who aren't one-note, have poor motivations, or who can't be easily overcome. The threat of a dragon, which used to seem massive and imposing, is now a mere fart in the wind to the tiny little ponies.

When I did the episode rating thing that was (is?) going on, somehow Look Before You Sleep ended up on top. It's not "OMGZ SO EPIC!1!!!", it's not stunning and brave, it's just a simple episode about three pony friends hanging out, which was skillfully written and produced. I don't think that lack of ambition or conflict is the big issue, I think that it's more that the big things are distracting from what really mate FiM great... and it's just not possible to keep that ball rolling for so long...

Well that's the thing, though. "Look Before You Sleep" had a situation where a rain storm was kind of dangerous and they had to take shelter from it. "Dragonshy" involved a dragon that could have smashed all the little ponies, but they went to go try to talk to it anyway - not even to fight it, because they'd only lose a fight. They were little ponies living in a great big world, surrounded by flowers, and mushrooms, and furry animals.

But now they live in huge post-industrial cities and the world is too small for them. Our main character is royalty.

Dash never had to become a Wonderbolt. It's not a natural conclusion to a story for a character to achieve an impossible dream and suffer none of the consequences or drawbacks. Being a Wonderbolt is completely incompatible with Dash's lifestyle and role in the show. It never should have happened, and her story should have had another logical conclusion, but that's what I mean when I say the show has no conflict or ambition.

Dash doesn't fail her dream, then realize she's achieved greatness in her own right another way. The Wonderbolt thing practically falls on top of her. It doesn't even cut into her schedule if we're not having an episode about it. And why? It ISN'T the logical conclusion. In fact it's the most unrealistic and improbable conclusion to Dash's story. And worst of all, it doesn't even seem to validate her in the end. It makes no difference. The title, the goal, was all just ceremonial.

They've always lived in post-industrial cities. Manehattan was gleaming modern skyscrapers as far back as season 1. The only difference is that those settings are getting more exposure, now that we've branched out to stories beyond Ponyville.

No, you can't. Her character was ruined the second after they revealed her absolutely ridiculous backstory and motivations. They made her a ridiculously overpowered villain, then a vengeful idiot, possibly even more overpowered, then they reformed her and made her a spineless character, while somehow keeping her a bonkers sociopath. Then they tried to make her a leader again, with pitiful results, and only succeeding in depicting her as some sort of insecure kid. She also monopolized four (4) two parters in a row. That's as many as 8 episodes, and it's terrible. The daily, obnoxious, neverending shitposting that's been perpetrated here ever since she appeared has only made things worse, and fostered the hate towards her character. Why do we hate Glimmer? Go ask the writers and the shitposters. It takes more than a cute design and color scheme to like a character.
I actually had hopes for her after seeing the season premiere, mainly because her interactions with Spike that could benefit both and lead to some good character development, but the wonderful writers butchered even that.

I think even in that flashback, we didn't get a look at the city well enough to see it was full of hardcore branding and advertisements for obnoxiously modern products. I know there's always somebody who wants to say, "Literally nothing has changed in the show! It's all exactly how it was in season 1!" but come on, damnit.

It still doesn't do anything about the fact that constantly changing everything means that nothing actually matters. Dash being a Wonderbolt, Twilight being a princess, Rarity owning three boutiques, the kids having their cutie marks - it's all totally meaningless because things change all the time without consequence. And if there would logically be consequences, the show just pretends there aren't any. Dash doesn't have to practice with the Bolts. Rarity doesn't have to manage her chain stores. Twilight has no governing responsibility. The kids don't have to face reality that their cutie-marks are completely useless since 99.9% of ponies know exactly what their own mark is for - it was mentioned in an episode but not really resolved.

Nothing matters and there are no consequences for anything anymore. There's no normalcy because the show simply redefines what normalcy is. An entire race of creatures can just poof into something else if the script wants to reform them, so pony doesn't feel consistent or like it's trying to appeal to adults anymore.

Accept everything at face value? Like, what. Is there a deeper, abstract implication from Dash becoming a Wonderbolt yet never needing to practice? The only logical implication is that she got in through nepotism, because she's famous and knows the right ponies - which is just a hair's width from what they actually say in the episode where Dash attempted to kill some of the Wonderbolts by fucking with the routine.

That's not really a fun implication so much as it is a sad one, though. At its face Dash met her dream. At its core, Dash is an example of everything that can be wrong with a supposedly merit-based system and she's the complete antithesis of what she wanted.
